stJNES5.2: From the Beginning
Update 1, 2400 B.C.E.

In the new century, trade is beginning to appear across the globe, enriching and destroying nations. Meanwhile, obscure city-states and bands of people begin to find nationhood.

A new army is raised in Assyria, where the country wages war in the countryside in order to tap various strategic resources and prepare for much harder wars. Most of Assyria’s resources are geared towards war, and so building chariots comes at a very cheap expense, and yet are one of the most versatile fighting machines on the battlefield. Meanwhile, contact is made with five new civilizations, all who city-states that has arisen out of obscurity. First and the largest threat are the Hittites to the northwest, who dwell in their mountain desert cities. In the far north, amidst a daring mountain range, live the Lezgians, fervent fighters, almost as much so as the Assyrians. And finally, to the west lay the three Levantine states of Mitanni, Phoenicia, and Judea. These states, while weak militarily, control most of the trade entering the Middle East, and a prosperous route has already been set up, traveling through the desert city-state of

The Kingdom of the Isles soon expands from its small isolationist valley and into the rest of the island. And, to the King’s dismay, the Kingdom unveils a bountiful of other nations. To the north, the Picts live peacefully in their small mountain coves. In the south, two tribes who are constantly at war with each other reside (Angles in the east, Saxons in the west). Meanwhile, the Isle Highlander gains fame in not only its victories against the barbarians that roam the land, but also successfully reaching the other side of the island quckly.

Lapland continues to scratch out a living in their hostile and bare environment, where winter reigns supreme and crop failure is more common then not. Reindeer herds are not reliable to stay within the borders of the state. To add to the continued dismay, Viking hordes now constantly raid the unprotected borders of Lapland.

As the Lydians expand, they are met with abundant rival city-states left over from Mycenaean expansion. These states are not easy to defeat, their walls are over ten men high, and without proper siege weaponry yet, it makes it difficult to bring down. However, the Lydians prove their fighting abilities when these walls were overcome four times and more. The economies of these city-states are incorporated into the power of Sardis. Also, trade is becomes reality with the Levantine states, as the Hittites destroy whatever caravan comes their way.

Magadha rises from the Ganges plain. This civilization is very adapting at trading and therefore is a very prosperous tribe. However, it is very much threatened by the surrounding empires and barbarians who would love to add a Magadha province to their state if just given the chance.

Amidst the corrupt Persian religion comes a new religion, the second of its kind to focus strictly upon one God. Zoroastrianism arises in Persia, where thousands of temples are built to the God and his prophet, Zoroaster. The spread of the religion has helped educate the many peoples of Persia in reading so that all may read the holy book. In accordance, the Persian religion helps to unify the land under one religion and culture. Meanwhile, the Bactrians strike once more, but the Persians, having created an army of thousands of conscripts, are able to fend them off for the first time at the gates of Persipolis. The chief of the Bactrians left a note, saying he will be back with an army three times stronger (-1,000 conscripts).

Antigot meets resistance when expanding to the north. A Gaulic and a Celtic tribe arise to power in the north, creating difficulties for the Antigot to accomplish an empire status. However, with the north apparently blocked, Antigot looks south, landing and invading the island of Corsica. The mountainous land provides needed rock and metals to the mainland, and helps to establish a small trade network. Moving further south, Antigot attempts to take the second island, Sardinia, but fails miserably as the Kingdom of the island rallys a strong army and repels the Antigot (-300 spearmen).

Leptis is established south of Carthage, the town symbolizes the continued prosperity of the state. No matter what new neighbors arise such as the Trypoleans or the Numidians, the Carthaginians seem to continue unhindered. Leptis is built with the same Mycenaean architecture as Carthage, and even supports a larger harbor than its parent city, so that more trade comes to Carthage. Just like the Antigot before them, the Carthaginians fail miserably at conquering Sardinia as well, the Kingdom of the island is quick to repel any invasion, and take little casualties (-200 spearmen).

Minoan expansion bursts from outside the small island of Crete. Minoan armies first land in Greece, the homeland of the Mycenaeans. Athens is rebuilt from the ashes that it was destroyed in, and the Greeks in the area rejoice to have a city to live in. In their grace, the Greeks build up a sister city, in honor of the Minoans, called Mycenae. Both cities are prosperous ports and unify many warring Greek tribes. But what truly unifies the land is the presence of the authority of Minoa. Meanwhile, the Minoans also land in the south, at the corner of Africa. Mostly nomadic herdsmen, who are easily defeated in a swift campaign, populate this land. To house the soldiers who occupy this land, Minoa builds a small town called Cyrene. The town is constantly under attack by the stronger Libyan barbarians.

Guanxi develop the world’s first writing system, based on early cuneiform writings used mainly to organize and keep track of the agricultural surpluses (+ education).

Both the Dacians and the Greeks, who wish to rule themselves and oppose the Thracians bitterly, attack the Thracians aggressively. A large battle, taking place in the far west, ended in a Thracian victory, but the war seems long and with no end in sight.

Rhodes begins to expand, in the wake of Minoa, but meets disaster in the Greek peninsula. Opposing the rule of the Rhodesians, as they have little to offer, they block all expansion and, in the end, force the Rhodesians off. Meanwhile, a fleet heading to Cyrene must take an alternate route when the area is found to be claimed by Minoans, and land in a more desolate desert town, barely populated. However, a small colony is founded in Anatolia, though with Hittite opposition, it is not expected to last long.

The Sicilians attack the Separatists Mycenaeans; in an attempt by the Sicilians to gain back their land they believe rightfully theirs. Many battles take place in the rocky terrain, most favoring the defenders. However, as the Mycenaeans march towards the Sicilian capital, they are ambushed, and in the largest battle in history to date, the Sicilians destroy them. Victorious, the army continues on to conquer the rest of Sicily and even found the colony of Croton on the mainland Italia.

The Fins continue their expansion as usual, meeting little resistance, and founding the port city of Turku.

The Harappa civilization begins major projects to improve the infrastructure of the river valley. By this, I mean that the Harappans have constructed more canals in their one river valley then there are in the rest of the world. Communication is very quick, as the canals are not just used for irrigation purposes, but also as a means of traveling. Many urban centers also begin to show, as the irrigation has cut the task of farming to make it easier, leaving more people free to move to the cities. Most of the cities are centered around canals and man-made lakes.

Notes from the Mod:

To upgrade economy, you can’t do anything with it for however many turns are in the brackets. Many of you were confused with this.

Remember to take into account the process of increasing your economy when you design wonders – it takes much longer to increase economy now so the wonders will take more time if they are to increase econ.

Btw, I haven’t finished adding NPCs yet, I still have a bit more to go, especially in East Asia.

And the map...woot, two more days of school!

ooc- I see Sardinia is going to be a pain... hehe

to Celts and Gaul:
We have no wishes to war with your people. We hope we could all have peacfull borders.

To the Picts
Northern Brethren, as a sign of friendshim and goodwill we would like to enstablish trade relations between our peoples.

To the Angles
Greetings great warriors of the south, we offer you our aid in defeating your arch enemies the saxons in exchange of a share of the spoils.
We would allso like to start building roads between our nations and start trading so that both our nations might greatly prosper.

OOC: Great update :D, one question: if i want to build a road let say to the capitol of the Angles (London) will the road connect to all those cities between the two capitols too?

are all of the levantine states allied?

My education is still idiotic... Or is it because it's a new religion so it takes time to spread it?

@ Jason; Mycenae is just north of Sparta (in NES Terms at least); on the map, you created Athens and Thebes as Minoan colonies ;)

regardless of that, cool update :)
