stJNES9 - Changing Times

Remember, there are no wonders yet. Projects are merely the things you start in order to increase your economy (ie, build canals in the southern Nile region to spread the water to farms, etc). And remember, these projects dont always increase a level, even though it does increase the economy (little by litte :)).

Oh, okay. I'll edit it.

Mongolia

The Khan of the Mongols rode out to where his father was burnt after he died, and wept as he remembered his father's not so greatness, and said to the air,"Look dad!I rule some stuff!" he then raised his hands, where they had been cut off from war,and continued in saying "Look dad!No hands!"

ORDERS
-Spend economy on army
-Expand my culture north.Still just a bunch of nomadic tribes, but with the same culture.

He bore the scars of a freedman, Hryle did, and he bowed before his queen.

His chariot was next to him with a particularly dissatisfied Llama in front of it to pull it, he had originally intended for the Llama to push the cart, but the pulling was far more efficient.

The wheel had been an oddity to the Trikk until he had arrived here on his chariot to the woodworking festival, "I name you Sir Hryle.," the queen uttered, looking into the scars that adorned his back and marked him as free.

Hryle stared into the dirt, his eyes would not be allowed to glance at her majesty from so closely even now.

The Queens feet turned, she faced the crowd.

"I prophecy that this Sir Hryle will be a mighty assistant to the Gods and to the Dominion!"

Hryle had seen a dozen woodworking festivals, almost half of those as a freedman, he had never heard those words before.

The guards tapped him, indicating that he could stand, the Queen had dissapeared and Sir Hryle, Earl of Unconquered lands, vassal of her majesty Queen Garh stepped onto his chariot and tapped his Llama with the loose green branch that he kept to prod the animal on with.

The army was waiting, and they would conquer on the chariot.

-

Hryle's commision of warriors slammed into battle against the foreign tribes, he had been advised against attacking into the Amazonian lands as their land was not as good for farming and they grew more and more furious at the Trikk each passing year as armies and settlers poured into their lands.

On the open prairie the warriors began to charge against the northerners, the Northerners shuddered before rushing onto the battlefield, the Dominion produced many a fine warrior and the tribes surrounding them had learned this in a number of hard and bloody wars.

The Llama that Hryle sat behind was lean, specially bred for speed and strength as the prophecies of the Queen had commanded, a cruel sneer was on its lips. Hryle would lead the Charioteers himself, this would be the ultimate test of the Chariot, his axe was at his side, prepared to be pulled out in a moment, his green whip was in his hand and ropes joined at the Llama's muzzle were in his hand.

The warriors were beginning to battle, Hryle's whip floated in the air, dancing sorrowfully as the test began.

The Llamas charged, pulling dozens of Chariots, each rider tucked the whip into his loincloth's straps and pulled out the axe.

The chariots thundered around the warriors, they couldn't go through the mass of warriors and would have to attack the other army from the side.

The warriors from the north stared, captivated by the thundering chariots, and the axes rose in the well muscled arms of the charioteers.

-

The northmen lay dead, and after a few more battles Hryle imagined that he would have considerably added to her majesty's dominion and won sufficient farming land for himself and his soldiers.

The soldiers were well trained, in fact the most vetran troops, and the army would train more to replace them as they retired after these battles, becoming farmers and raising families, taking Hryle as their patron. They cheered around him now, raising their axes in celebration.

The chariots had been a resounding success, crushing the northmen, a few had fallen when the northmen had hurled themselves into the paths of the Llamas. Blood caked the fur of Hryle's Llama, the mysterious sneer remained.

-

Hryle watched as the Northmen slaves built a wall to protect the new settlement. The queen's favor had shined constantly upon him, and though he often feared the jealousy of his fellow nobles. Hryle had been made Duke, a new position second to the Monarch and had been granted authority to hold his own woodworking festival in the North, in his personal fiefdom's capital of Hraal.

It was a far smaller settlement than her Majesty's magnificent city of Trii. Trii had no walls, but several hundred people lived there, working stones and merchanting, it was far more impressive than Hrall, which had a market where clothing was sold, where the farmers and the ranchers traded meat for vegitables, a miniture replica of Trii with far fewer commodities.

It was not too impressive of a city, but it was a city still, and Hryle knew it would come to be important, as his aged hands pet the aged Llama, the same Llama that had lived with him since the fateful day when his invention had been vindicated, the Llama looked to him, nearly smiling, before that mysterious sneer took its lips and it cast another glance at the people who sat in the Duke's house, waiting for a morning comission, clerical tasks that befit the clients of the Duke.

-

((OOC: Well, a Llama, even a specially trained one, isn't very fast, but I'm fairly certain that after a couple of centuries of breeding then (micro)evolution will have allowed us to create a faster breed of Llama, even now some improvement would be obvious))

((OOC(2): I don't think I understand the source of the units list or of the UU's I see, I consider the first part of my orders, the story, to be a request and justification for a UU, the Llama Chariot, as the events retold in the story can be seen as an experimental use and not an official use of them by the Trikk army that should be striken from any consideration by the rules, if this is totally out of line then tell me))

Orders:

- Develop Llama Chariots
- Add another city in the North, as described in the Story.
- Add 1000 Infantry to the Army

- Use 2k Warriors and 1k Infantry to attack the less popular Amazonian tribes, try to get other Amazonian tribes to assist me when possible, spread strife throughout the Amazonian tribes.
- 1k Warriors are to defend my settlements on the Amazonian side of the River Nerai (I don't care what the real name is, the Trikk call it the Nerai) another.
- 1k warriors are to protect the capital.
- 1k warriors (and a handful of experimental chariots which are not official) are to expand northwards.
- Begin Project: Nerai Irrigations which should improve the yeild of the farms on the coast and away from the coast of the Nerai, as among the irrigations there will be wood reinforced ditches to bring the water far from the river itself.

- Add another social structure, the Duke, a secondary position roughly equal to the Low Gods yet subserviant to the Queen. He may hold the woodworking festival, but the champion must be sent to the Queen to recieve a military comission or title.

OOC: BAD IDEA, Fantasmo. Not only was that area destroyed in a war of gods (or two), but its way too close to me. Bad idea... ;)

Now, I don't mind really, but I thought I said Bosporata is at Constantinople, not Adrianople.

I DO like the touch with the realistic numbers of armies. Makes for epic warfare.

Will we have religion stats? I have an idea for developing my religion/culture overtime, but I need to know for sure.

Lol at Amon's story.

IC:

Land of the Aedor... The sky, the wind. The world is not ground - it is the sky.

"Before the land and the sea there was the sky - Aedor.
The land and the sea shall pass away - the sky, Aedor, will remain.
And into you, mortal, Aedor
Shall come first and leave last."

Thrace. Land of the migthy wind and the eternal sky, land protected by Aedor. What man can stand against the wind? Only a foolish man, or a brave man, and neither one's body will survive.

"O, Aedor!" - exclaimed the newly-declared high priest, Merados. Aedor was blowing at his back as he stood on the Hill of Bospar. He could turn around, but that would be suicide. Eventually, as he will grow old, he will need to turn around, and to face the wind, like Bospar once did, setting the tradition for all the high priests to follow.

Merados was rather young for a high priest in the opinions of some, but the calm and peaceful aedor could be felt in him from birth. He was calm, and wise, and respected despite being the youngest high priest yet. The old chieftain, Seft, often listened to his advice.

"O, Aedor!"

"O you who blow at my back, o migthy wind, o eternal sky! O, the migthy Aedor, above whom there is no one! O, the mighty Aedor, who will survive everything that might come!"

"O, Aedor! I, the High Priest of Thrace, the leader of your worshippers, come to plea for your advice!"

"Give me a clear mind for less then a day! Give me the idea on what to do! For Seft is old, and will soon die, and his son does not respect you, o Aedor, and me as well!"

"Or better yet, in your eternal and calm wisdom, o, Aedor, make the Son of Seft wiser! On him, the future of your chosen people, the Thracians, lies!"

"O, Aedor!"

Orders:
- Try to breed war horses (note that according to the first story, we DO have horses, but don't have any horsemen yet - horses are simply in agriculture and transportation).
- If that suceeds, create a new UU - Wind Riders: powerful and rapid horsemen, with little or no armor, equipped with javelins and bronze sabres. Are good for skirmishing, hit-and-run and "berserk" charges (in part thanks to the effects of special narcotics, in part due to sheer amounts of consumed alcohol ( ;) )). Are tatooed, and make ferocious war cries that put fear into every man's heart. 250 (?) per credit.
- 1 credit to getting 1,500 warriors.
- Try to get some agriculture and fishing going. Nothing much, just to get those two "industries" off the ground.
- Steadily expand westwards. Encourage expansion towards there, anyway.

The Emperor surveyed the newly built ships. He had designed them himself, and had blessed their construction. They were massive, able to carry many men in them at once. And they were dangerous to whoever might challenge them. The sides had slits just above water level, where archers could fire their flaming arrows at whoever dared to challenge the Empire. They had animal skins, made damp by the water, covering their sides in order to prevent a fire from starting on board, and smoke could come out of the slits instead of building up inside, adding to their aura of fear. They were a bit slow, but that was the price that had to be payed for such power. And with work on the lumber camp starting, more were being made every day.

"I name these ships "The Emperor's Hand"."

New UU: The Emperor's Hand- see above and description in orders, which have been edited.

At exactly what point the ancient Slavs abandoned their prior nomadic ways and united into the single kingdom of Slavenia is not precisely clear. Oral tradition refers to this point of time as "the first update", but what exactly this was an update of is not exactly clear.

Even less clear are the manners in which the first update was pulled off, primarily due to the lack of written records (Evidence of ancient Slavic runes remains controversial at best). For this reason, our best sources on the early Slavs are put together by archeological evidence and testimonies of foreign travelers.

Often however, foreign travelers were killed before they could come back to their homeland, so in effect our best sources on the early Slavs are testimonies regarding the testimonies of foreign travelers. From these we can learn that the ancient Slavs were a primarily peaceful rural people, working away at the numerous grain fields with their sickles and pounding away in the forge with their hammers, with a penchant for getting drunk by way of Vodka; one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world, developed from the grain which they worked on with their sickles.

As they were mostly pacifist, the ancient Slavs fought little. When they did fight, it was mostly over Vodka (Or fields of grain.. to produce Vodka), and they did it nude from the waist down. Or from the waist up. The ancient sources are not exactly clear about this either. The primary weapons used were sickles and hammers, which the two combatants hurled at each other in hope that they would embedd it in their opponents skulls. If by chance the sickle and the hammer collided mid-air, tradition dictated that the combatants take a shot of vodka before proceeding with their bout. In the end, the victor would slice off the head of the defated and use it as currency.

And so, historians presume, this continued for quite some time. The earliest leaders of Slavenia were monarchs who managed to gain control over the most grain fields and breweries without anybody noticing it. Eventually however, as the prices of grain and Vodka grew too large, society was outraged at the tyrant. So they started getting into more fights. But Vodka prices continued to soar. So they started to slice off the heads of old people. But pretty soon old people started running out. So finally they overthrew the monarch, took him and his family to a random villa, and over a presumed communication breakdown liquidated them there.

And so it came to be that the ancient Slavs adopted Despotism. There would be a despot, and he would have the job of choosing someone to be his sucessor. If he didnt choose someone to be his sucessor before he died, there would be a lot of drinking and fighting. The despots job was to provide equal amounts of vodka and grain to each and every one of his subjects. Unfortunately, the despot often gave out small amounts of vodka to his subjects and held large amounts for himself and other high ranking government officials. But nobody really knew that because this was an intensely guarded secret, and those who did find out were liquidated on the spot. So everything was happy for a while.

Siam

The emperor was pleased the success of nation especially wth the creation of the great of Bangkok. Thanks to the great men who built it, it would hold out against the strongest of armies. This made the entire population happy. But they were not just concerned with defense of a city they also wanted a strong military so that they could expand thus increasing their land and population, something that would lead to much greater things in the future. But to do this the emperor knew he would need the wealth, which started with collecting more taxes. So to help to try and obtain these riches the emperor decided to start a "project" that would help increase economice output. Whether or not it worked would remain to be seen.

The other thing concerning the nation was the rumors of two other huge empires: the Thai and the Mekong people. The emperor knew that he could do nothing more than offer a friendly greeting to them, and hope that it turned out to benifit his nation. He could not order anything military wise.... yet.

Atlantis

A short treatise on the Atlantean religion, and culture
By Arcantos of Atlantis Magna

The Gods of Atlantis are not truelly unlike the gods of most other religions, but it is how the gods themselved are percived that is so revolutionary; for while other religions portray thier gods as sitting atop gilded thrones, commanding all nature to obey, the Atlanteans see the gods in teh abstract, that the gods themselves are divine manifestations, and personaifacations of nature, and that the earth itself, and what is in it is a form that the gods might take, just as much as they might choose to have a humanlly form.

This view on the nature of gods has an interesting effect on Atlantean society, for while th epopulac eof other nations shucn education, and learnign fo the sciences, puttign thier faith on abstract superstitions and magics, the Atlanteans lok to science as a way to help them understand the nature of the gods themselves better, and do not veiw science and knowledge as disagreeign witht he grand theogeny of things in any manner- for the gods must have a way to do what they might do, and the art sof science and learing are ways to learn the ways of the gods, and thus doing them great devotion- thuslly, the people of Atlantis are far better educated then thier counterparts on any known land, for the people of Atlantis are a pius lot, and rather fanatically devoted to thier religion.

here follows some of the major deities of Atlantis, and what thier particuler aspect is;

Saturn- specifically speaking, the God Saturn is concerened greatlly with agriculture, he is also greatlly concerned with wisdom, wealth, and power, amkign him a very popular diety amoung Atlanteans as a whole; the father to a fiar portion of most of the other gods, he was once thier cited ruler, but eventually abdicated to his Son. While not the most important deity in Atlantean life, he is quite populer, and hsi gradn festical, the Saturnalia lasts 7 days, and is filled with maginficent parties, parades, gifts, and fesitivities of all kinds

AtlasThe patron deity, and first king of Atlantis (OOC; jason the king- if you coudl change it to Atlas in your story, instead of ferris, i would greatlly appreciate it, i knwo it said it didnt matter early, but i just came upon the idea, and it dose make sense to have the first ruler named after a god , mixing legend with truth) Atlas isnt a true god in many respects, but the first ruler fo Atlantis is named after him, and the god, a minor one, watches over the islands, and is siad to be the deity respsonsible for thier creation.

Prometheus- this God is said to be the god responsibel for the creation of mankind, and the original bestower of the most basic of technolgies, such as the mastery over fire, and for this a festval day is celibrated, starting at sundown, centered around elborate fesitites involving great pyres, grillign of meat, and performs doing stunts with fire- assocatied also with great courage, and bravery, he is popular with explorers and soldiers

Oceanus-Perhaps the bes tknon of the gods of Atlantis, he is importan toe veryday life, and shrines to him can be found all over the land, the patron of the seas, he is not the mere maste r of the seas, but he is the very personaifcation of them, and while Atlas is said to watch pver Atlantis, and be responsible for thier creation, it is oceanus whom was th eone responsibel for thier creation, thrusting them up from the very seas- a wise God, he is a brother of Saturn. many fesitvals are clibrated in his honour.

Terra- the great goddess of the earth, from whch all things spring fourth in bounty, she, and thus the earth, and the great universe around it was created from nothingness, known as "Chaos". from which thier was nothign before it, the goddess of all things, she is revered, but not widelly devoted to. though the Atlantians take rpide in carefulyl managing the land, for to damage the land in exces sof what people have to do to make life confortable woudl be an evil

thier are, obviouslly many other gods, but they can be detialed later, in other short treatises about our noble religion. For now that the short introduction is done, a word shoudl be said about Atlantean culture

Atlantean culture centers around heorcism, and bringin honour to ones fmailly, friend, city, or the nation of Atlantis as a whole, as such, the Atlateans are keen particuler upon the arts of war, or exploration, and of science to make thier name in the world- for a keen component fo Atlantean culture is the concept of 'Kleos", making ones name toleave to posterity before one dies, as is rather contastlly drilled into young Atlantean boys heads, tending to make Atlanteans give thier all to most things that they choose to undertake.

The cultureal life of Atlanteans is centered around the city, and quintessentially unit of Atlantean politics; the urban populace of islands is highlly sophisticated, and internal trade amoungst differ islands is ver common, each island, with its dominant city genberally having its own speacilty; for instance, the island fo Atlantis Prime, with e great Capital of Atlantis magnos speaciles in metal working, as sinc eit is situate dont he largest island, it has some fo the largest veins fo metal ore, and many of them are very substantial; othe rilsand might specilize in artistry, stone carving, agriculture, ship building or a host of other trades, though on every island a substantial mix of every trade can be found.

The public lif eis centered around three great areas; the temple, and its attendent collnedaed pavaiol, offering pristine refuge from summer heat, and a tranquil place to meet with friends or familly, or just to sit around th epools of water, relfeting upon things, the agora the grea tmarket place sof each city comprises a major comemrical sector, and offers everything from fine trade goods, to live permances of acrobats, amoungst other perfomers, most naythign can be had in the great agoras, and they are a popular place, where much is discussed and barterd, the third is the forum, the political heart of every major city, where the town officals elected form the populace, and the local aristocratic head meet to discuss doings on the island, and how problems, if any shoudl arise, and is th eplace where judiical disputes are settled by impartial judges who, to ensure that they are unbaised towards the paerticpents, travel along a circut from isalnd to island generally not staying in the same city for more then a year or so.

this is all but a breife introduction to Atlantean culture., and thie ris surrely much, much more that canbe recounted in future documents

OOC: Oh well. I'm bored. ;)

Oh, his back. His aching back.... It hurt like nothing else. His spine throbbed painfully and the heart weakly tried to continue onward.

Juba awoke suddenly. His back hurt.

Curses, but it would always hurt. Ever since his life had been twisted irreparably. Ever since he had been injured so terribly... Of course, if he hadn’t received the injury, what would’ve happened? He would never have risen above the status of a common warrior. That was high, but he would never have become chief. Have become king.

First of Germa, then of the entire Garamantes civilization.

With a start, he realized he was dying. It was not unexpected. He had thought he would die, long ago. But now? It’s not fair. It’s just not fair.

He tried feebly to call out. Nothing. His fingers began to go numb. His heart rate slowed.

He was a young boy again, loosing an arrow to down an antelope. He saw a glorious sunrise. His encampment sprawled before him, timelessly going onward. The trees burst into leaf, highlighting a huge grove around the wadi. The rivers were streaks of green across the plains.

A thousand memories flew by. Of his wife. His dear and beloved wife. Dead so long ago from the influence of the moon that had killed her.

Of the building of Germa. Into a real city. It was stone. Stone, like so few others had come to be.

His succession to rulership. Countless raids, then conquering campaigns. An empire ever growing. Attempts to breed the horses of the plains. The year when the lake nearly dried up.

A woman appeared by his side, and this was no dream. His daughter.

“Father.”

Louder this time.

“Father.”

“My girl,” he looked directly into her eyes. “I want you to be the heir.”

“What!?”

“You will be the heir. You are the smartest, the wisest, the bravest of all my children. Let it be known...” His voice grew fainter, “...That succession will not be determined by gender, but by ability. This goes for the whole empire. And if any should doubt you, let it be known that you swear this upon your father’s honor. And you can take...” he gasped for breath, “my seal. Take it! The other thing you should know... Is that... You must... Pledge to... Extend my kingdom unto the ends of the earth. Try to hook up the horses to the carts. Tell our great minds to think on that. Use these for war. Use your knowledge, your strength, your skills.

“Make it so that the sun never sets on the empire of the Garamantes. Make it so that no one forgets our nation.

“Make an empire to last the tests of time.”

Well, to add to that:

Orders: Garamantes SECRET, MIND YOU...

As story indicated, the city of Germa is to become much more developed. As such, underground irrigation tunnels are to begin to be developed to improve the farming all around. I suppose this might be a project.

This should add into cumulatively making us have the greatest city in the Sahara, certainly, and hopefully the world so that we win biggest city.

Make sure my empire is not sexist. See story.

Increase education with the one spending point I get. This will be accomplished through the building of temples, I guess. We should not be an uneducated, brutsih race.

Encourage development of the four horse chariot, it shouldn't be too hard to develop, as it was the unit that in real life was the trademark of the Garamantes, and hopefully my trademark in this NES.

If we can't get that, just try to breed horses, which is even easier, all it takes is one individual who is good with animals and smart. :)

Expand northward and around the gray blob, with 500 swift hunters to scout the local terrain, protect the settlers, and find the lakes, or what are to become oaises.

Send offers to the local barbarian tribes to join our empire. See the below diplo:

***

To: Berber Tribes.
From: Garamantes.

We are of the same lineage. We are all great nations and brave warriors. We could all survive independently, yes.

But is this the best course?

Think about what could happen. You could recieve the benefit of the protection of a larger nation. You could recieve the benefit of free food from the government. You would not need to fear retaliation after your raids, for you would be part of the greater whole.

Your peoples could become great. We could all prosper.

Will you join us?

***

Anyway, hopefully some will join. Also encourage some of our people to join our army, in order to make the nation better, if they were truly patriotic, blah, blah, blah. ;)

Now, the above diplo will surely incite some resentment from some of the tribes. The less enlightened ones, or the simply barbaric ones will not accept the glory of our empire. Now, the ones who politely decline we have no problem with. But the one's who insult us or execute our ambassador are to recieve the following fate:

Protect our lands with 500 swift hunters.

With the remaning 1000 (remember that 500 are guarding our settlers so barbarians cannot kill them), raid/conquer whichever pesky, rude barbarians dare to insult my glorious realm. ;)

Now, the objective is to punish those who would dare to insult our realm (thus, if they all join, then no one would be attacked). Also, though not officially, to destory Berber resistance to a united kingdom.

Thus, 250 of the swift hunters are to raid the smaller tribes. I mean the little ones, who have fewer than a few hundred warriors. It should be easy to do this, as we have experience. Get in, wreck havoc, pillage the treasury, and leave.

The larger ones are to be dealt with one at a time. Focus most of the force on them, with however many swift hunters the leader of the war bands judges is good to destroy them, leaving whatever is left over in reserve.

With these forces, we are to maintain a central position on the southern frontier, to respond to every threat. The main force will aim to utterly destory the more powerful (though still probably not as good as us ;) ) tribes. Thus, their tactics are to use their swift mobility to sweep around the foe hiding as much as possible, so that they do not see us. Then distract them with a very small band of warriors to one side of their formation. They will run to counterattack them, but at this point, all the warriors around them will rise up and loose as many volleys as they can, then charge using clubs and spears to fell the rest of the barbarians.

We have surprise, shock, and valour on our side. Thus, we should win.

The reserve forces are to hold off any of the other tribes that attempts to attack us, so that they main force can deal with them. Thus will the tribes that opposed us be systematically conquered.

In the event that this happens (who knows, maybe none of them will be so foolish as to insult us), then assure the cheiftains who are neutral to us that this was to avenge a grevious insult, and that we will not tolerate attacks on our soverignty.

EDIT: OOC: Sorry for the long orders, Jason, I have a tendency to repeat myself because I have a paranoia about a mod ignoring a crucial if in my orders. Nothing personal, It's just me. Sorry. :(
