STR-05: Shaka the Virgin Conqueror

Turn 2 (745 BC): I blunder by sending the Impi near Washington to the Corn to pillage, but forget do move one tile at a time and end up fighting an Archer.:smoke:

The Impi wins, but has 0.6 health left....

IT:
... and gets butchered by another Archer

Turn 10 (625 BC):
Roosy has settled Boston near some Copper, but barbs are doing the pillaging for us now.

STR05turn2.jpg

Turn 13 (580 BC): America has built the Great Wall. I hope Roosy realizes it'll only keep out the barbarians.

STR05turn2a.jpg

Turn 15 (550 BC):
I pass on to GreyFox.

Not a very eventful set of turns, mainly building up troops for the attack on America and doing some pillaging, which has fueled our research on Maths. There's a Sword healing in Ulundi from a fight with barbs. Ulundi has started a Sword, but I didn't whip yet so Fox can decide if he wants to switch.

Making up the balance:

Inherited turns, decided to move our stack of swords into New York:

Str05-BC0550-NewYork.jpg

Hmm ... so would we win?

Then,

Str05-BC0520-maths.jpg

We can count! Yay! So I reviewed the situation in New York, calculated the wave function of all quantum probabilities (no, I unlike Schroedinger, no feline is harmed), and decided we will win, easily.

Thus:

Str05-BC0520-NewYork.jpg

Nothing lost. Just in time to continue funding our deficit research too.

Later on, our Impi near Washington caught Rosy sending out archers:

Str05-BC0460-archer.jpg

So, our Impi ambushed one. Where did the other go?

Here:

Str05-BC0430-archer.jpg

No, thou may not enter the city!

Here is the situation in Washington.

Str05-BC0400-Washington.jpg

We have 6 swords (7, but 1 has used his movement points), but the 50% cultural defense is making the odds like 25%. I don't know if 2:1 ratio is enough. If the next player think so, then attack before pressing enter. If not, move the southern swords to pillage the corn.

I am more worried abt German, since they have metals ... two. Thus I am sending some more units to pillage the hell out of them. Here is the forces deployment:

str05-BC0400-forces.jpg

We are heading towards Construction, but happy limit is gonna to be severely curtailing our growth or ability to whip. We may need to head towards Monarchy ASAP, or capture a city with religion ASAP.

LOL at New York. Probably gave the Prince AI a little too much credit. I think we should wait a bit with attacking Washington. We need to take the city in one turn, or the 100% GG bonus from the Great Wall could cause a Great General to rise for the Americans and really bulk up their defenses.

Roster:

1) Strauss
2) GreyFox --> just played
3) stuge --> UP
4) pigswill --> on deck
5) ungy --> away until Sunday

If we're looking for better than a 2:1 advantage can we build/move 2 swords/axes faster than Roo can build an archer?

I'll review the situation, but me going in at Washington depends simply on my mood. I'm thinking of waiting a turn to get the seventh sword into the fray. If Roosy pops an archer, the city will be taken with catapults.

Going for monarchy after construction seems like a good plan.

We've acquired some resources through taking NY. Is it worth going for calendar for happy people?

Maybe calendar first would be better. Improving NY would boost our research and give two happy faces, more with theaters. Wines+HR wouldn't give us much more, considering that the unit upkeep is better spent on units that are attacking rather than holing up in cities.

I'm for calender ahead of con. I think we need the happy/research, and I think after we finish Roo we can might want to send a small force--maybe 3 swords--to take the gems city from the barbs.

My inclination would be to go for Roo this turn--I think if we wait he'll build units faster than we can reinforce--although surprised he didn't already.

Let's break the bad news, our losses, first.

Three impis. One ran into a German sword in a jungle when I foolishly moved him two squares into the fog. Another one lost to another German sword while defending a forested hill. :grumble: The last one was taken out by a Chinese axe after causing quite some havoc in Mali.

Right, now on to the good news.

I mulled for a while over the Washington situation and decided to attack on the inherited turn. We convienently had three 3xp swords there, so I gave cover to them all and threw them at the city walls. All three perished but the assault left the city ripe for picking.

Civ4ScreenShot0000-1.jpg

The conclusion was inevitable.

Civ4ScreenShot0001-1.jpg

It came with a free granary and a fricking big wall.

After the battle two swords were still on full health, so they marched towards
Boston. CR2 swords vs. unpromoted archers in a flatlands city with no walls nor culture is about as far as it gets from a fair fight. But life isn't fair, especially not so for the Americans, who ceased to exist.

That's two, the third was Franktfurt, which was razed by a impi/axe/sword forward stack for no losses. Got a bit lucky there.

On the side of peaceful development, Ulundi finished the library and assigned a scientist once the whip anger wore away. I whipped the monument in NY and an Ikhanda and a monument for one pop in Washington. The next player should be able to whip a library there for two pop in a couple of turns. D.C looks like a prime spot to run scientists and grow cottages. It's so far away from the frontlines that we don't need to excatly mass-produce units there.

The future

Our main attack force is rallying in the north. The barb city in the east isn't a priority, however. Our primary target should be Berlin. It's an amazing city: wines, cows, five flood plains and two iron mines in the fat cross. The sooner it's in our hands, the better. The forward stack is there now, hopefully
they can take out at least one iron source.

So mass the swords and bring some catapults. (We have construction now. Calendar is next via sailing.) A road is being built towards Germany to speed the attack along.

One last thing. We got a GG from taking Washington. What should we do with him... early in the mornin'? We could settle him in uMgunlunwhatever or go for a impi super-medic.

Save

Seeing as I'm UP I've Got It.

First GG for supermedic sounds good to me; we've got an Impi in Ulundi waiting to be rushed through medical school.

Our economy is pretty naff (nothing unusual there in AW). Not sure of rationale for library in Washington. Might be better to use Ulundi as science city and use Washington to build/whip some units, especially cats as we have enough swords scattered around to consolidate into a decent SoD.

Build cats, delete obselete warriors, pillage Germany, research slowly towards calendar, consolidate swords. Should be enough to keep me occupied for a few turns.

I'd as soon keep Germany metal-free by pillaging and focus instead on MM to keep the AIs from out-teching us too easily.

With corn and pigs Washington can easily run two scientists, which is good regarding our research capabilities. After the library is done, it'll have nothing to build except units anyway.

If we can take and keep Berlin, it'll make an awesome unit pump, allowing our core to focus more on commerce.

Played 15 turns up to 35ad. Not much happened.

Pillaged around Berlin which raised some cash to fund our deficit research. Berlin still has iron (on a riverside hill defended by an axe).

Built some more units: 1 sword, 2 cats, 2 axes and 3 impis. Disbanded three warriors coz we couldn't afford to upgrade them and they were adding to our unit costs.

160bc. Whip library in Washington (2 pop): :smoke: coz whip misery meant we couldn't support any scientists.

130bc Whip granary in New York, start Ikhanda next turn.

85bc Sailing>Calendar.

40bc Archer killed by skirmisher near Walata.

25bc. Skirmisher killed by sword (vengeance).

5ad. Kill german sword and archer. Kill chinese warrior.

35ad. End of set.

At current research rate calendar is due in 13 but money runs out in 9.

A small stack heading west:

A (probably out of date) culture map:

Roster:

2) GreyFox
3) stuge
4) pigswill --> just played
5) ungy --> UP

OK-got it for tomorrow.

Once we raze Watala, we should have money to fund Calendar all the way.
Actually I think Walata was just formed so we'll get little. I'm inclined to work specs in Wash--we'll want that to be our GP farm. Get the GS in Ulundi then no more specs there. We have 4 calender resources, so getting calender is huge.

I'm considering razing Kumbi Saleh then moving on to Berlin. That may be easier pickings, and get us the $ to get calender. Then move on Berlin and keep it.

OK here we go:

35 inherited turn.
50 we take Walata w/o loss but there's a german axe/sword combo on other side of river. I move a couple of garrison axes towards the front. We can do an emergency whip if we get surprised.
IBT our sword defeats german axe across river.
Bis builds oracle.

65..
80..
95..
110 LB in Germany. Guess we know what Bis took from oracle.

125 we burn Kumbi Saleh at the cost of a sword. Since Bis has LB and the geography is for MM, switch attack to MM.

140 pillage hamlet near Hamburg. German iron defended by axe.

155 GS born. We'll likely be running low science % and a long way away from a phil bulb so I settle. Not that I'm necessarily sure on the bulb anyway.

170 we take out a Japanese axe/archer pair on the road to Ulundi.

185..

200 calender in. I take poly at 0%.
MM sends a 2sk, settler pair out.

215 Irealize I forgot to fire the specs in Ulundi after the GP was born:(
Only 3 sk and 2 warriors in Timbuktu.
I plan to keep that. Holy city, silver, copper, hill.
Bis reforms Essen near ivory.
IBT Bis builds SH.

230 spend a turn reducing Tim. In retrospect I should have gone for it but not everyone on the right side of river.

245 Timbuktu falls for 2 cats and a sword. We keep. Sending cats down to Djenne bypassing Essen. That can be taken with axes, although we might want to let it grow to 2 and keep it. That would give us communicationn with the Mali lands.

260...I leave most of the turn to the next player to decide the next target.

My general strategy thoughts are we finish Mali, keep Djenne and Essen, then roll west over Bis with cats/jumbos. With the calender resources our economy will be OK and it's really just a matter of units here IMHO. It's a long time at prince I think until gunpowder units so we should be able to roll over at least Bis. and likely the rest.

Research wise we could use mon-feud for happy and LB for defense.

Would have it if there was a save.

Roster:
1) Strauss --> UP
2) GreyFox --> on deck
3) stuge
4) pigswill
5) ungy --> just played

I'll look at the game tomorrow if I get the save. I'll post any strategy options/questions if necessary.
