Strategy Discussion and Guides

If you flip Charleston, then I personally prefer Houston rather than New Orleans.

Maybe, but that has more overlap with Denver, and New Orleans can be captured easily in 1700 AD.

I have a quick question, how do you 3 cities with legendary culture for italy UHV? The cities I try and get are Venice, Rome and Florence. What should I do? Thanks

The cities need to be Influential, not Legendary - three Legendary cities wins a Culture Victory. Great Artists and a high value on the Culture slider should do it.

Whichever city is your 3rd most cultural as you get closer to the goal should be the one to get the National Wonder that provides +100% culture.

Has anyone won a historical victory with Brazil yet? I cheated (played as Portugal and left a bunch of slaves in Brazil) and still came up one slave short.

I got one. You have to be a bit lucky, though, and try to meet every civ as soon as possible. Congo can supply a bunch of slaves, but not enough on its own. But sometimes Phillip or Victoria will still have a couple of them hanging around. Bribing Willem or Bismarck into slavery also helps a lot, especially in Willem's case, since his South-African cities get big and he'll sometimes draft three slaves right the very turn he switches to it. I suppose you could conquer South-Africa yourself instead.

Yeah I'd probably have better luck with a 600 start, I think only Spain and Congo still have slaves in the 1700 start. It's just such a long wait, and I like the way 1700 Brazil is set up.

I don't know how many slaves you need for the Brazilian UHV, but I once saw Spain with 15 slaves.

You can usually send a settler to Durban straight away (on the gold) and it won't be built on the 1700 start. Farm all you can and hook up the crab and it will produce enough slaves in time to get the plantation goal.

Personally I find that approach a bit exploitative - I think Leo is planning to change the slave trade so you will be able to buy all the slaves you need.

For italy should I use artist specialists? and what is an easy way to get great artists?

Get Drama and build forges and theatres asap then manually force each city to run two artists and one engineer. Don't let them run any more specialists. That way you should quickly get either great engineers, to whip the wonders you need and the national epic, Sistine Chapel and any other culture wonders still available, or great artists. You'll need two great artists.

Try to build as many wonders as you can in Rome, as it already gets strong culture as a holy city and has good production (give it the marble for extra hammers). Also capture Naples asap so you can put a cathedral in Rome. That way Rome can become influential on its own without needing a great artist. Then wait till you hit the Renaissance for the extra culture from the GAs and pop one in each of Venice and Genoa and you've done it.

Oh yeah, build Genoa on the stone hill rather than Florence. It's a better city and doesn't cramp Rome so much. And you hook the stone up straight away, and get one additional food from that hill.

Is there a time limit for an apostolic palace victory ? I notice that the 'members' board goes empty when I click it open after 1700s . I tried winning a game with HRE that way. The year I got catholicism spread to all countries the member board went empty.

The Apostolic Palace becomes obsolete if any civ has knowledge of Nationalism (not necessarily the civ who controls the wonder).

Has anyone actually achieved an AP victory in DOC ? In any start . I'm thinking of the best peaceful game victories in DOC. Except Space Race victories of course.

i dont think so. it tends to require europe to want to vote in sufficent amounts for a single guy...just one catch: it's europe...where everyone wants what the others have.

How on earth are you supposed to do the Mexican UHV? Three Catholic Cathedrals would require 24 cities :eek2: With a 1700 start you get one free, but you'd still need 16 churches, in 70 years.

And I have no idea how to get the commerce goal for Argentina, everybody's got a HUGE head start on you.

Since when does a cathedral require 8 churches?

For Argentina, remember that all forms of commerce modifiers apply to your city's score.

You only need 12 cities for the Mexican UHV; conquering America should do it.

For Argentina, I found the Trading Company helps greatly, if you can afford to skip out on Assembly Line.

IIRC for Poland you needed 4 churches for each, I haven't the slightest idea why it's telling me this.
