Mr Domen treads a fine line between intellectual curiosity and outright racism.

Let's be generous, and assume it's intellectual curiosity. A courageous curiosity at that.

Racists aren't usually 'intellectually curious'. They're generally not even very intellectual. Haplo groups are one things, races are another. It's really that simple.

Let's not, Im not a very "political correctness" sort of guy but when you argue that black people are genetically dumber than white people because their primitive societies didnt cause them to breed for intelligence you have crossed safely into racist territory.

As per intelligence, I'm suddenly reminded of the creationist biology teacher who was obliged to teach biology (so, yes, that means evolution) and he felt he gave evolutionary theory "equal time". (So, basically, he was teaching 50% biology and 50% irrelevant theology). Comes a question from his class:

"How can black people evolve from white people?"

Teacher (missing the double logical fallacy) replies:

- They just have different skin colour.

(Both teacher and class were white US inhabitants, obviously. I'm not kidding, it's a video viewable on youtube.)

Is anyone seriously shocked that he's spouting racist beliefs?

Oh hey look, it's not Muslims who are trying to impose their religious beliefs on others:

Google Translate will inevitably cause more conflicts than mustachioned men with AK-47s and an inferiority complex ever will.

Posters warning women they should only walk on one side of the road have been taken down after they sparked a backlash.

The notices, which were put up along streets in Stamford Hill, were removed after residents complained to Hackney Council.

Written in both English and Hebrew, they read: "Women should please walk along this side of the road only".

The Shomrim group, whose Jewish volunteers support policing in the area, said they were put up by an orthodox Jewish group for a religious parade this week.

People from the religious sect are prohibited from touching members of the opposite sex unless they are married or closely related to them.

More than 20,000 Haredi Jews live in the area - the third largest group in the world.

Some people criticised the signs after pictures of them emerged on Twitter.

Ed Wells wrote: "More information on the signs would be better. It does come across very badly if you don't know the reason".

Another person said: "If I saw one of those, I'd walk on the other side out of sheer cussedness."

Isn't this a remarkable story? I'm amazed.

I can't see much to object to in the bolded part, though. If that's what your religion demands, and unwanted touching can be a problem let's face it, how could a sect conform without using notices of this sort during a parade. And why shouldn't they be allowed to hold parades in the areas they live in? A bit like a street party.

Still, the poster could have been better worded, and directed equally at men and women.

Equally, it could have been worded in a much more confrontational manner.

Thing is, if this was Muslims doing it, certain people in this thread would be up in arms.

I can see that.

I think the wording of an Islamic poster would/might have omitted the word "please", though. Which might be unfair of me. But such is my impression.

Also Islamic women have to go around in bags all the time anyway. Otherwise they're prostitutes.

I think the Islamic world is a much more black and white one.

edit: Oh look: here's a more recent, Vice News (I've heard of them ;)), clip.

So basically you are saying Muslims in general are like (ultra)Orthodox Jews? Well, if you leave out all the regular Muslims, you'll end up with a pretty black and white view. Yours, that is. Not the Muslim view.

A lot of Muslim women don't wear the hijabs anymore, you know? They are only there for modesty and are really a minor point in Islam. If a woman doesn't want to wear them for what ever reason, I don't mind and I won't judge her on that, especially if it is summer.

As far as I know, the hijab has zero to do with Islam. It's a lot to do with tradition, though.

Is there mention of hijabs in the Koran, or not? I expect it requires women, and men, to dress modestly, but that's a pretty moveable feast.

Religious fanatics have a bit of a habit making up their own rules from dubious interpretations of the words actually written in their holy texts.

For example:

Homophobia in Christianity!

I don't think that's down to "dubious interpretaton".

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

Seems clearcut to me.
