SysNES 1: A Murky Pool of Light

Diminished Flames

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

Thomas Jefferson

“I am no great arbiter of man. I cannot judge the desires and needs of my people. Yet I know the difference between a child and a young man. To me, a child is one you must teach while a young man is one who you must guide. Government is as such.”

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha olam...

"Blessed are You, LORD, our G-d, King of the universe..."

It is depressing. Depressing to know that you are the last of your kind, and that after you, there will be no one else.

I unfolded my Bereshit and my Shemont. The tale of the expulsion from Paradise and the experience of Jacob and that of Moses and the journey from Aigyptos: all of them weighed heavily on my mind. The all-mighty G-d moved in mysterious ways. Why did he send me to this forsaken frontier area? And why did the Tumult then reoccur?

For all of the talk of physicists, chemists, biologists, and engineers, they had never proved to me that G-d did not exist. On the contrary, history has shown that people have turned to the supernatural as the wonders of the universe increased exponentially. La Revanche de Dieu was true in the days at the dawn of the Solar Federation; I believe the same will be true of the coming times. The Tumult, if history has been any indicator, is that of creative destruction.

“A mother understands what a child does not say.”

I distinctively recall a discussion I once had with a classmate when I was a visiting student at the Hebron Institute of Higher Theological Studies. She posited the age-old question: Is G-d a woman?

If we are the children of G-d and G-d is a woman, would G-d treat us much as a mother raises her children?

I did not further pursuit theological studies and as such, I cannot attest to its theological basis. But as the normative standard? If we take the relationship between G-d and us in the same way we would see the relationship between the mother and her children as a standard by which we view the universe, than we can only hope that G-d knows what it wants us to do, to be.

Undoubtedly such thoughts would be considered heretical. Yet I can only presume that all of the Elders and Learned Rabbis are dead. After all, why wouldn’t they be?

Praying, I asked for continued humility and the strength to persevere in this land of gentiles.

President Mitzu pays tribute to the pirates!

It has come to the attention of our editors that the Mitzu Administration plans to essentially submit to the Pirates, otherwise known as the infamous Society of the Liberes. Worse than pirates, they are a society dedicated to the notion of ordered chaos where happiness is designed to be the supreme goal. This alone is not a problem; the problem is the lack of moderation in the Liberes’ pursuit of happiness. The pleasures of sensuous human existence are only of worth when it coexists with spiritual and ethical considerations. The President is raising a monster…

He placed his datapad down. It automatically moved to project the image of the newsfeed in the air. It was the headline for one of the premier news agencies on Ningbao. Looking around at his collected ministers, he stated the obvious:

“As you can easily tell, the Ningbao Evening Post disagrees with my recent decision. I do not disagree with many of the analysis, frankly, I agree with most of it. That is why we must avoid the scenario where the Republic and the Society of the Liberes ever come into direct conflict.” There were many nods, but not everyone was smiling. “Christopher? I’m afraid you betray a hint of disapproval.”

Smiling, Christopher shook his head. “Not the case at all. It will take us 7-8 years to get the capability to even defend ourselves adequately against the Society. I was only wishing that we did not have to deal with this, or with the gaggle of foreign intrigue. They all seek to use us for their own purposes.” Frowning a bit, he gestured towards the night sky. “What can we do with what little we have? Simply bide our time and hope things blow over. Keep our head down and trudge on. Horn awaits; that is where we shall go and that is where we shall build the foundations for a new state.”

-----------------------------------------------

It was a beautiful scene.

She sniffed.

The environment of course, was lacking in much.

Water and ice as far as the eye could see. And then there was the weather: storms, high winds, cold temperatures and more storms. It would take some time for them to get used to it. But there was an atmosphere, there was water, and there was life. Anything would be an improvement over Gemstar and its barren worlds.

And anyone who tried to contain them on Gemstar would have to do it with force. No way in hell would anyone want to live in Gemstar forever, especially after Horn.

She could smell a coming storm. How wonderful. They would have to seek shelter.

Aiurs Labyrinth

Asuryan had returned to Zavi; his time off ship had allowed him to meet his family once again. He didn't miss them, it was just traditional for travellers to meet their family face to face on their return. The family hadn't changed and all found this tradition a burden on their time, preferring to send communications through the data network.

Much else had changed though, politically the core of the Cybernetic party had been absorbed into the Biotechnologists; The new party still held the ethos that adaptation would bring them forward but they now embraced a wide range of solutions; appropriately they were termed Adaptationists. They were also still led by PI Aiur, an all but a spent force; Polls indicated that whilst the party still enjoyed wide popularity with its string of successes, PI Aiur damaged the parties popularity and had made future elections a bit more unpredictable.

The majority of the shattered remnants of the Cybernetic party that had not joined with the Biotechnologists had termed themselves Populists, who simply attempted to gain traction with the voters based on what they wanted, too often they were seen as attempting to gain votes for reasons of power as opposed to pushing any particular ideology and here they failed. The Purists were the smallest splinter group and also the most organised, and they believed in simple universal purity of people, the Kation people and only the Kation people should inherit the post Tumult Universe, they gained some vote but, disturbingly were not rejected out of hand by a lot of voters with a wide number saying "The time is not right". The Adaptationists were being urged to confront and dismember the Purists on the political scene, but most parties liked to pretend that they did not exist.

The Third way had undergone a bit of a revival but had been severely punished by their coalition with the Adaptationists, having struck a deal before the Cybernetic collapse some in the party had urged them to strike out on their own, others had urged the party to stick to its agreements and finish getting its policies pushed through. What had seemed like a golden opportunity for the Third way had been wasted as the party shifted from disagreement to disagreement. Attempting to remain ideologically pure but also attempting to ensure that their pure vision was implemented in some fashion or another had left mixed results. Often leading media sources to claim that they were not fit for government until they had grown up and matured. [1]

Asuryan was at a loss of who to vote for in the future. At the back of his mind he assumed that he would vote for the Adaptationists if nothing else changed. For at least they had put up facilities to mine the Gas Giant of Zavi VI, at least they had put together a colony fleet capable of developing Minkar quickly. At least they seemed to be pursing an agenda of expansion and greater wealth for the citizens it governed. But he wondered how long the Adaptationists could hold together until old arguments broke out once again.

[1] I feel like I could have done something worse to them not sure what.
@ alex, back to politics ;)

EDIT: Treaty Signed PI Aiur

not that the treaty has changed from the one I first put down :p

OOC: Since you insist upon writing stories, upon stories, upon stories on politics kal, I will now comment on every one of your stories until you change your ways :p

A disgrace. When humanity finds more joy in connecting with technology and through technology than in face to face connections is when humanity ceases to exist. Wait... ;)

Eh.... I disagree with that assessment. I mean, where is the basis for the voters' rejection? If the Purists could just tweak their platform to include the Vazan as well and there you go :p

The flaw of the Kations' ridiculous love for a multiparty system :p Who cares about these fringe political groups that never get elected to office in the short run?

This flies in the face of theories about the populace in a well-educated and democratic country. The vast majority of people are simply unaware of everything a government has done; while more can be expected of the educated elite, even the educated elite cannot be expected to know everything the government has done. And of course, then there are voters who are unaware of the various electoral parties' platforms. There's another problem of voters being unaware of their own interests, so even if they knew the parties' platforms, they would not be able to vote according to their interests. And since our dear Asuryan does not even seem to be a member of the educated elite... ;)

An educated populance can easily look at the Kation assets aka none

They are in coalition; hence they have power.....*puzzled*

How applicable is a theory on a cybernetic, genetically modified population that is plugged into communication networks 24/7 with a plethora of capable hackers? More to the point look as Asuryans job description :p

I would do the same to your stories but I could also just remove my eyes in a dark ritual meant to wipe my brain of everything I just read :p

All orders recieved - to the updatemobile!

Coming tomorrow or Thursday evening
...
<also the next update won't be till the 16th due to me going to Spain for a nice little holiday>

OOC: An educated populance, those Kations must be getting their worth for their education system :p But you are over-estimating the capabilities of an "educated populace," it doesn't mean much. The vast majority of people will hardly be what you and I would consider politically adept.

They are in coalition; hence they have power.....*puzzled*

They're part of the coalition government? That does make more sense, but I'm afraid power also needs to be defined. Definitely they have power, but how much and what is the substance of their power? Essentially it boils down to why the media would even care to spend so much time on them aside from kal felt like it :mischief:

How applicable is a theory on a cybernetic, genetically modified population that is plugged into communication networks 24/7 with a plethora of capable hackers? More to the point look as Asuryans job description :p

Very applicable. Because nothing has been done to make them *not* lazy. You would think the greater ease in which people can access information might make them smarter or more knowledgeable about the world. That has not been the case at all. Furthermore, while you could go with the idea that more choices is better, that hasn't been supported by psychological studies. More choices only befuddle and confuse people so that when they do make a choice, they feel regret almost instantly at whether or not another choice would have given them greater satisfaction.

Just because they CAN access it with a single thought, doesn't mean they will. And frankly, they won't. So even though they are members of a cybernetic, genetically modified population that is also plugged into a communication network, that does not mean that they will be anymore capable voters than our average Joe with his computer and internet. :)

I would do the same to your stories but I could also just remove my eyes in a dark ritual meant to wipe my brain of everything I just read :p

Harsh, very harsh. :(

And since Dis made his vacation plans, I will be leaving next Monday for China and will return on the 25th. I forsee that I will miss around 2-3 updates so I should be able to send the appropriate orders. If not, contact dis :)

I sort of want to know more about the sociocultural lives of my victims neighbors, not that your domestic politics aren't fascinating...I'll be writing more about the Liberes spaceborn lifestyle soon.

Was the Izar system reveal ever posted publically? If not I'll send that to you for your archiving job Kal, since Izar has been revealed after all.

"No major terrestrial settlements, though construction of mining facilities on the second moon has begun. They appear to be expanding a cluster of habitations, shipyard facilities, and entertainment nodules outwards from the main shell (or rather, the multiple fragments) of their former worldship. The largest section of the worldship has been described as a palace of some sort, but the habitations appear to be very decentralized, linked by rocket skiff, mag-tram, and other ad hoc modes of transportation. They have nicknamed this network of orbital and high atmospheric habitats the "Isles of Temperance." It would seem that the title is ironic."
