Tales of the Shutdown

Now that the US government is using shutdown as a deliberate tactic rather than as a consequence of it seems less likely that good people will want to work fro the government.

That's part of the intent. Crony capitalism requires incompetent government.

When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton replied, “I rob banks because that's where the money is.”

I love it when people quote that as if he was being really profound. I said exactly the same thing, not because I had heard the quote or thought I was being particularly profound, but because it was really the only obvious answer.

The best way to rob a bank is to be its CEO.

Nah, join the board.
Get paid big bucks doing literally nothing but "networking" if Enron was anything to go by. The board's audit committee admitted they didn't know enough to even attempt to audit Enron's books.

so, friends, how did you enjoy the cold Mickey Dees and the Kool Aid served from gem-studded goblets?

Trump is too cheap to even buy Chick Fil-A or In-n-Out or even ******* 5 guys Jesus Christ.

I don't think it's really about the money. You can't steal that much money from the poor but you can make them grovel and acknowledge their betters. That's what it's really all about.

the extermination of the middle class is not exclusively about money, hardly. I agree. it's about power-dynamics, population control, "biopolitics", mechanisms of consensus, about twisting democracy, about limiting participation, about mental and ideological splintering..

the middle class is not defined exclusively through their money, but through habitus, preferences, political alignments..

If you're the CEO you can set everything up so that you make free money also but as Tim says that is a lot more like work.

No In N Out in DC. But point. He also notably owns a hotel with a full kitchen staff literally across the street. He also could have delayed holding the dinner until such a time as the WH kitchen staff weren't furloughed. Don't really understand what the point was with this.

I am learning that while federal employees should get backpay now that they passed a bill to do that, federal contractors (companies) can and do get massively stiffed during shutdowns. Contracts that began before the shutdown are often cancelled or otherwise unfunded due to the disruption. I don't mean they are temporarily unfunded or cancelled, I mean contractors have to continue working on projects to meet performance goals (and thus spend a bunch of money) and then the shutdown ends and the government never pays them back for work performed and/or cancels the contract altogether due to the disruption.

And it's not always so simple that the contractors can just stop working during a shut down. Some times it is but often times they have contractual obligations to continue working. Then they get stiffed.

NASA shutdowns cause chaos in general but this one in particular is really painful.

Are President found a way to continue stiffing contractors, very stable genius that he is

I would be surprised if Trump even knows about 5 Guys, or any of the other fast casual burger chains out there.

KFC (well actually the far superior Popeye's but Trump likes KFC) is the obvious winner for this situation. Fried chicken (and I mean real fried chicken, not bullcrap tenders or nuggets) keeps well and tastes good even when cold. And really, who would show up to an event and NOT be at least a little excited to see they were serving all-you-can-eat fried chicken??

"Let's take chicken, but remove the skin and bone and all the fat so there is no moisture or flavor inside, bread it with minimally seasoned breading and then fry it until it's about like shoe leather."

Bull. Crap!

are you joking or what? fried foods are notorious for not keeping well at all. in our restaurant, when a fried fish taco stays around for longer than 60 seconds (waiter doesn't pick it up, I dont have time to bring it out) we toss it and start over. fried foods 1) taste pbad when cold 2) lose their crisp surface 3) get soggy from the steam beneath the crust

however I agree with you that chicken tenders are just a mediocre form of fried chicken for children. it's also always lower quality meat (glued in best case, pureed "anything goes paste" in worst case), has a lower % fat content (not always, but rule of thumb it uses leaner meats compared to delicious thighs) and has a warped ratio of breading and meat

chicken tenders are the poor man's chicken katsu.

Fast food fried chicken is good for an hour or 2 under heat lamps. Unlike what you are serving in your kitchen, it is formulated specifically to last longer after frying.

I agree that it won't be nearly as good as something that came out fresh, but it would hold up a hell of a lot better than a fast food hamburger, especially since they had heat lamps to keep food under.

I mean hell, I'll eat fried chicken cold out of the fridge the next day. The texture is ass but it still tastes delicious.
