Humm I don't see the advantages of Japan here (Samuraïs?), but I don't really mind the leader and unrestricted leaders can be fun. Could throw in random personalities aswell while we're at it. The start is more important than the leader anyway -- no trait will make up for a BFC gold.
I have a weak spot for Samurais lol, they are really good units but get not used that much cos..well they are Maces and no classic breakout unit.
Strongest Civ would be Spain imo, especially Conqs are really powerful when we focus on one good unit type..with defensive bonuses we could take out big stacks easily if AIs are stupid and attack them on forests or so.
I wouldn't call the Samuraï a really good unit. To a certain extent you can consider it as a really good UU, because it's far superior to the standard Maceman. But having to tech CS+Machinery to get them is still kinda "meh".
I think winning OCC conquest will require going through drafting Rifles. With only one city's production I don't think that whipping Cuirs/Conqs will cut it. Especially as you can tech extremely fast in the early/mid game with OCC, so reaching Rifling won't be a real bottleneck.
Anyways, we should probably just launch a game and get playing, I don't think loads of theorical discussions beforehand will do us much good, especially as we usually kinda disagree
We wouldn't necessarily need to whip. HE + Forge makes 1-turning samurai only 32 base HPT (pretty do-able, even easier with bureau). Plus we can draft as a supplement to that (even draft samurai right when we hit nationalism, then get to rifling quickly thereafter). I also like the idea of conquistadors as a unit without any real counter.
Agree that we should probably start a game. Spain or Japan both sound fine to me.
I'd have the most fun working with triple gold + cows, or go crazy and play the average seafood start. I find corn + river cottages rather uninspiring for a SG.
