The Cool Unbuilt Structures Thread!

We're full speed ahead now I think.

Out of interest: what is it that has suddenly started this new rash of 'World's Tallest' projects? The title hasn't gone to a significantly taller building since the Empire State was built, but now loads of buildings are suddenly in planning to demolish the old/current standards.

New elevator technology? (Not a joke)

I would guess that this would be one of the reasons.. There must also be other technologies that make it cheaper to build tall structures like these.

Another reason is that a lot (most) of the supertalls are going up in emerging markets such as China and Dubai. It's not only a question of money, but also of prestige. Skyscrapers are trendy. Everyone wants their city to be a New York.

IMO we're seeing an effect of the Americanization of the world. American culture is spreading everywhere.. and the skyscraper is an American invention.

@Brennan

It only seems like there's more supertall buildings on the way right now because we're looking at proposals and not just buildings whose designs have been finalized.

There's a big difference between planning to build one of these buildings and actually doing it. When push comes to shove budget concerns and cost efficiency almost always win.
Some of these buildings will never actually be built, and most of the rest will be significantly scaled back in size and/or grandeur by the time they're done.

We'll see!

Burj Dubai is already being built, as well as the World Financial Centre in Shanghai, and the Federation Tower in Moscow.. just off the top of my head.

I read skyscrapercity.com on a regular basis (almost as frequently as civfanatics) and it isn't just a case of these being proposals - I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of what was posted in this thread was eventually built. (Not including the death star)

You know what they say about these oddly shaped looking buildings?

It's an architects dream and a construction supervisors nightmare. No joke, people suffer mental breakdowns when they have to build all that stuff.

You mean like the ROM?

I agree, but they're fun to look at :)

Oh yeah it's fun to look at them, but you can feel the cries of damned souls and sounds of agony and pain of making it infused into the building.

And I say that's a load of crock!

As such I propose a wager:

From this list of buildings I wager that no more then one will be completed in the next 10 years.
Russia Tower
Las Vegas Tower
Green Bird
The Chicago Spire
Dubai Towers - Dubai
The Mubarak Al-kabil Tower
Libeskind proposal for St. Petersburg (provided it's over 300m)
Tsui's "Utlima Tower"
The Shenzhen Tower

At the completion of 2 buildings or 10 years the losing party will be made to have a truely concessionary avatar/title/location/sig scheme (or equivalent if site changes format) for no less then 2 months.

Have we a bet?

tough, bets open to us all :p

How does one get up the two-mile-high tower? Surely you'll need an impractical number of lifts.

A conventional lift cannot be used in such a structure because of the weight of the cables. The lifts would work using a vertical linear electric motor, ie a long electromagnet. The space elavator would presumably use a similar system (carbon nanotubes conduct electricity)

Awesome thread. Very interesting thread.

I also highly doubt something like that 'Ultima tower' will be built in my lifetime, although i wouldnt be suprised if it was.
