Update 0: A Turkish Phoenix?

A secret location somewhere in Istanbul, Turkey

"If the Earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital."

- Napoleon Bonaparte

For the Council, it is time to get back to work. Yes, it is New Year's Day. Yes, many of the leaders did not feel too well after heavy bouts of drinking the night before. Yes, people are still in a festive spirit. But the world does not wait for celebrations.

They meet in a small, dark room in an innocent-looking building in the backstreets of the former imperial capital. This is not Constantinople. Some modernisation and repairs have taken place, and a few factories have been built on its outskirts, but many of its buildings are run down and in a sad state of disrepair. No grand palaces or government offices remain here - the capital has moved to Ankara when the Turkish Republic was founded. In these times of transition, Istanbul is overlooked and neglected.

The meeting is top secret. There are many senior members of the government here, but also other more shadowy figures. Codenames substituted for real names.

"Dell19" spoke first. "So to carry on from what we discussed previously, it would be an excellent idea to expand our industrial capacity as we are surrounded by many powerful nations. And as head of research I highly recommend we start looking into basic tabulating computers to help government and administration."

"Our military should be the priority," said PrinceScamp, pointing to the two soldiers who stood guard at the door. "I mean, look at them. Those Great War era rifles are a disgrace. They're relics from the days of the Sultan."

At this point the Chair spoke. "PrinceScamp raised a good point. Dell19, inform the people at Military Industries here in Istanbul we really need better equipments for our infantry divisions. Luckymoose, I need to ask you to speak to the people at Istanbul University if they can help us modernise our agriculture. Once these are done, then Dell19 I say we start researching industrial technologies."

The head of the navy, who had his hand up the whole time, interrupted. "Sorry to interrupt but my arm is really getting tired. If I could direct your attention to something I found while looking through the Foreign Ministry's documents. These are the countries which guarantees the respective country's independence in our region."

"Look at that," said General Karmic Knight. "Like the Great War all over again".

"Albania is a potential target for expansion though," observed Dell19, "no one cares about them. Only Italy guarantees them. If I remember correctly the Albanians have no national army to speak of, correct?"

"Quite right," said someone.

"They got a source of oil as well", said mostly-harmless. "We're a bit short on that resource".

Someone else interrupted. "Huh. Twenty-three years of independence and they can't even organize a military. They would be better off under our 'guidance'. I bet if we attack fast enough their diplomat won't even have time to cry to Mussolini about it!"

"Hold it right there. Aggression is not going to go down well with our neighbours or with our public."

The discussions continued through the night.

Ankara, Turkey
January 5, 1936

The next few days passed by relatively quietly. President Kemal gathered the generals together in Ankara and told them they would need to move towards a "Standing Army".

Then, on the fifth of January

The Parliament met in an extraordinary session and decided to uphold the claims. If Turkey is to become a major power in the world, that is the way it has to be. Angry words arrived from Athens, Sofia, Belgrade, Baghdad and other capitals. It could have been worse. It was a diplomatic coup for Turkey that the non-aggression pacts and guarantee of Turkish independence by the Powers remained intact. Still, this has raised Turkey's belligerence in the eyes of the international community.

That evening, the Council met again in Istanbul. On the wall of the room there was a new map of Turkey. It showed current Turkish territories - and claimed territories highlighted in dark green.

The campaign now starts in earnest.

Not so. If the Russian fleet on the black sea is crushed we can station a tiny fleet in the Azow sea and then you only have to defend against attacks from the north. We won't probably won't have to defend transports sending troops to Crimea either. (Provided of course we destroy Bulgaria and Romania. Not that they have worthwhile fleets either.)

Just looking at the map, I would say the Persian territories might be the priority -once military/industrial modernizations are done.

Since actual production doesn't seem to have been finalized, I support Dell19 about putting enough IC in the queue to get a third tech team available.

As a minor note I think I would have preferred that the event was split in two so that initially we only claimed Greece and Syria (possibly Bulgaria and Albania as well) as the nearest provinces that we are likely to be able to take and then trigger another event once we had conquered those regions. Also Kemal dies at some point so possibly the event could have fired them. Out of interest what were the full details of the event? Did our relations also go down?

On the tech choice I'm never sure whether to go for machine tools or man power first although given the tech teams it did make sense to first research the man power tech.

Persia is an interesting target although admittedly I'm not sure if anyone would declare war on us if we attacked them as the UK and SU may well be guarenteeing their independance. It would likely be quite a long war as Persia has low infrastructure so our troop movements would take some time.

Our relations with all the countries we have claims on go down. With countries like Greece or Bulgaria, they go down by 100 IIRC. With other countries relations went down by 50 or 25. Our belligerence also go up by five. On the other hand, our hawk and interventionism sliders are adjusted to almost full. Note that when Ataturk dies in 1938 we will become isolationist again.

We have a NAP with the Soviets IIRC. Not sure if the UK will intervene.

The Grand Turkish Navy will glady transport 10,000 men to take Albania, in less than a month's time their papers of surrender will be on our desk.

Gentlemen and comrades of the CFC Sublime Porte, regarding expansion as I see it here are our options at the moment.

1. Invasion of Albania - they have no national army to speak of. Our lone transport flotilla (1st Ironman Flotilla) and one division is more than capable of taking Tirane. They are guaranteed by Italy, however we have a non-aggression pact with them.
2. Invasion of Bulgaria - Taking their industrial capacity is enough to enable the Turkish Government to recruit a third tech team. Their army is around the same size as ours. Much of their terrain is mountainous, making offensives difficult. They are guaranteed by the USSR and Germany - both have NAPs with us.
3. Invasion of Persia - They have a small army. We could easily take on their army but the terrain will make progress slow. They have somewhat good tech teams and more importantly, a large oil field in Abadan. We have a NAP with the USSR, but there is a risk the British would intervene to protect their interests.

We have NAPs with Persia and Bulgaria - they will need to be canceled before we can invade.

As the Head of Foreign Affairs, I say we invade Albania. If Italy decides to do anything, we could easily take them on. This will be a good base from which to split Bulgaria in half and it will raise our morale!

Might not the Germans get upset if we invade Bulgaria?

I doubt we can take Italy on. However they will likely stand by and protest idely. I say we invade Albania and Bulgaria, Albania first.

Pfft, what are the Germans going to do? Take over most of Europe? HAH! Not with the Treaty of Versaille.

I agree wholeheartedly with these statements

Update 1 - The Last Days of Albania

Tirane, Albania
January 15, 1936

The Albanians proclaimed their independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. In 1936, Albania was still a poor and backward nation. King Zog, a former Ottoman governor, ruled over a country divided by religion, race and politics. Albania has been increasingly drawn into Italy's sphere. Italians have unchallenged economic dominance over the country, and some say it is only a matter of time before the Italians decide to take total control. Not that any country outside the Balkans really cared about its fate.

AAR001-1.jpg

For a rejuvenated Turkey, Albania - without a proper armed forces and isolated from the international community - was a natural target.

War was declared on January 12, 1936. Turkish infantry commanded by General PrinceScamp transported by the Ironman Naval Ferries from Izmit quickly secured a beach near Tirane then marched on the capital, facing almost no resistance. King Zog fled to Egypt, and the Albanian Government soon capitulated. By January 14, it was all over. The crimson flag flew triumphantly over Tirane.

There were fears Italy might intervene militarily, but in the end the Italians merely protested. The war was over so quickly the Italians did not have time to respond. Around the world the Turkish attack came as a shock. Within Turkey itself, there were dissenting opinions. But these are a minority, and the CFC Clique is already planning its next move...

Attacking Greece will surely bring in the British. We must have a contingency plan in place to defend against their navy and prepare for an invasion of Iraq. If their French dogs come in to assist, then Syria also!
