The Democratic Caliphate.

I received an invitation request from citis, our Tzar over there on the other story. As I don't remember any conversation about him joining the Council, I would like to ask you citis why do you want to join the Council.

I'm not prohibiting anyone, but to join the Shura you must become a Counselor (even if without any assignment yet, but willing to get one), so I would like to be sure that you want this.

If you just want to follow the news and debates there, you may do so without joining. I did an open group just like sanguiv before me.

Becoming a Counselor entitles you a vote and the right to give opinions on the matters of the Caliphate directly.

We don't have any Provincial position to give yet, and there is a line waiting. But we may find something for newcomers to do.

I say that the line is created and made in the group. So there is no confusion.

I just want to have the right to vote on techs and say my opinion, as I did in the start of the story. I don't want to control any city.

Subbed, I am CaterpillarKing

I think it takes a week or so to be able to be added to social groups, but you can try. I have no idea at all.

It takes 5 days and 5 posts to join social groups. Also, Cosimo is Matthias.

I definitely have hit the 5 posts mark :lol:

Is this another one who had his account vanished?

EDIT: BTW, VGL, wherever you are please let us know which new account you're taking and how you'll vote on the council topic of the New World. It would be great to close it soon.

Yes, I was Matthias I

I couldn't come to CFC these last 2 days, but now I'm here, and I have just received a group ownership change of Majlis ash-Shura: The Parliament of the Democratic Caliphate from Sanguivorant himself.

He didn't write anything about it, so I have no clue why he did that. It seems to me the hopes for his return have diminished more, so maybe it's time to start brainstorming about what to do with the position of Caliph. I don't think it's fair to be a Provincial Counselor and Regent at the same time (also it's too much work).

I'll come back later, so to all who have been following this story, please give us your opinion.

I say we take a vote. We go through the ranks of people, starting with you, and vote on who should be caliph. Obviously if he gave it to you, he wants it to be you.

If we can't think on anything more elaborated then this, I think your solution is the one to be followed Caterpillar.

But we should try to discuss here what exactly is the position of Caliph to see if we can come with a better solution.

Until Sanguiv went missing, the Caliph was at the same time:

- Leader and Mediator (with full authority, but letting us some freedom);
- Gameplayer (the role that I'm doing for now);
- Storyteller (the role that Jackelgull is doing for now).

And I know that the most important reasons for me to become "Regent" were that I already had the mod on the right SVN and already explored the Savegame before. Those are poor reasons to substitute the Caliph position IMO.

I don't mind to continue to play the game, if downloading DoC 707 is hard/impossible, or if it'll bring relief to players that would like to rule the Caliphate, but not play the game.

What is mandatory is that the Caliph mustn't have another role. I can't be neutral when proposing stuff because, as Counselor of Egypt, I have my own interests related to my primary position.

The Caliph should have the respect of the higher position, different from a Counselor, which is a position buried in Council politics and schemes.

If we force this separation of roles (so the Caliph can't be a counselor and vice-versa), 2 solutions come to my mind:

- We choose a new Caliph until the end (of time, of our political system or of his patience);
- We elect a Caliph every new term (which can be of the same term-length of the game or not)

Although at first I like the idea of elections, it also scares me a little. Uncertainty is scary but exciting at the same time (at least for me).

I would like to know others' opinions on this. If we come back with the election system, our story would bring together the old style (the one Sanguiv started this story with) and the new style (the Council one). If we just choose the next Caliph, we would need a sort of reserve power to change him if the council doesn't think he is fit to rule anymore.

With any solution we would have to write a sort of Magna Carta to balance the powers of each position within the Caliphate.

So people, tell me what you think. New ideas are welcome too.

What is Jackelgull's current position?

I am the master of spies and the story writer. If there is a new caliph, I wonder if I can discuss with him/her the possibility of continuing to write the story unless the new caliph really wants to do the job him/herself or my writing was really that terrible.
I also don't think it is entirely possible for a person to write satisfactorally in the style of somebody else.

To be honest, jackelgull should be the writer and mediator, and Spirictum be gameplayer. I trust him to only follow others' decisions. It would be where the jackelgull is the official caliph and Spirictum directly follows out on everyone's requests and such. Jack would more likely have a better understanding of all of this, and because of afore mentioned reasons Spirictum stays gameplayer. Also, we can give the Master of Spies to someone with an arbitrary position or someone whom has no position at all.

Yes, but I protest that my better understanding shouldn't count for much. The job should go to the most willing, the most able, and the guy most able to keep a group together. I propose that we elect a Caliph from any of our group members who don't have positions yet, as either administators or advisors.

I don't know if anyone doesn't have a position as adviser or admin. The two main focuses should be mediation, leading, and story writing. I'm unavailable on the group right now so if someone could tell me what's going down, that'd be great. What if the two current co-rulers (jackelgull and Spirictum) gather together who they think the best possibilities are and then make that the ballot, and we vote from there. We have to all promise to be adults and not get pissy if someone isn't picked.
