The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

BTW, you get a horse yet?

I can't wait to, but no! I've only explored the immediate area once you come out of the sewers, haven't been to any cities or towns yet. I went into a bandit stronghold that's right across the river from where you come out. So far I'm finding the combat to be a bit better and easier at low level than I did in Morrowind where a rat could almost kill me! I really love they've done the block feature, it's so much better than Morrowind.

I'm running the 6600gt(128) video card at 1024x768, with 1 GB RAM, Athlon 3200+ processor, and get:

60 FPS for dark areas in the opening sewers/dungeons
30 FPS for brighter areas with no combat
20 FPS for brighter areas with combat (range 17-25, had one large fight averaging 19-20)
20-30 FPS outdoors, combat didn't seem to lower the FPS as much out here.

The auto-detect set everything to medium. The only things I've changed so far the resolution, and I enabled all the water features. I may try and see if I can push it a little farther. I think I can for most of the game - it's just when there's multiple enemies in combat I think I might have trouble.

The main graphical issue is still the fairly poor texture on distant hills. You can control the distance where it switches from 'real' grass to the texture, so I'm going to try extending the distance and see if my computer can handle it.

Excellent! That's my system right there, except I have a GeForce 6800GT 256MB so I should be getting some good graphics. :D

Also is it me or is the Collectors edition map far more detailed? I remember I got the Collectors Morrowind and the map was astoundingly detailed with tree's, individual buildings and even X's to denote buried treasure but Oblivion's map that came in the box only shows towns and I can barely see individual buildings in the towns. I guess it could be because the landmass is far larger than the area Morrowind concentrated on but I dunno.

Drool. I hate my computer. I bought a dell last winter and then upgraded the video card to an ATI Radeon 9250. What a mistake I made. So, I played Oblivion at a friend's house today, and its amazing. Absolutely amazing. The fact that I just ran up a hill, found a stable, took a horse, and roamed randomly for an hour was absolutely incredible. Being able to count the trees on a mountain that is very distant from you is amazing. The only problem I had was a bit of framerate issues once i got out in the open. Too bad I don't own the game :( . Plus, my computer would never handle it. However, I'm gonna get some work this summer and hopefully in a month or two's time, I will have enough money to go on a New Egg spending spree!

I actually ordered the game yesterday and I'm hoping to get it sometime this week, I can't wait. I also tried out that system requirements lab link posted in this thread, the results brought a smile to my face but I doubt my beast will run this that well

My Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Duel
Core Processor 4200+
2.21 GHz, 1 gig of ram
GeForce 7800 GTX SLI
Various other things I don't feel like looking up (lol?)

Anyway, NVIDIA is apparently releasing a new driver that should improve the performance of this game (http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MTc2OTcsLCxobmV3cywsLDE)

A question to those who have the game, what's the first impression of "Radiant AI"?

It's almost 2:00 a.m., about time to get some sleep. I've been mostly exploring and not really doing any quests so far. A few of the highlights:

- Horses! As soon as you can, not long after you get outdoors, just go and steal a horse. You can reload right afterwards if you don't want to worry about guards chasing you down and things like that, but you should try it out as soon as you can!

- Dungeons - they're huge! The amount of work and detail is just incredible.

- The AI - The Radiant AI is pretty darn good! The soldier patrolling the country road bade me a friendly hello, and some of the NPCs will speak to you when you get close, rather than you having to initiate all the conversations. It was also very cool when I went into an inn and I had to wake up the owner because she was sleeping behind the desk! It's not perfect, as I once saw a guard who seemed to be doing the moonwalk, but's it's a major step forward.

After several hours now, I've only had one minor glitch, but it's hard to describe it without spoilers, so I won't mention it for now unless I see someone else bring it up.

Finally, based on the performace so far, I think I am going to try boosting a few setting upwards just a notch. I'm already very happy, the game performance is definitely better than I expected for my computer.

Back from playing the game! It's awesome! :D I dislike the grass because it hides the corpses so I just turned it off. It runs well on my new system at high settings and I guess I can attribute that to the GeForce 6800GT card. I rather like it so far!

With my GeForce TI 4200, I should not even be able to run the game at all :(
And as my mother board is old to, it's an AGP 4x :(

Me need money to buy new mobo and GPU!

Do you think if I open a subscription here enough people will have piety and help me exit this dangerous predicament (dangerous because my frustration may lead to a terrible depression).

I have a GeForce TI 4200 and can confirm that the game does not run with it.
Time to save up for a new mobo, GPU, Cpu, ... *sigh*

According to my research, the lowest cost to get something "acceptable" is 122 € for a GeForce 6600 AGP, that will not require changing the mobo nor CPU.

But might well require a new PSU, as the one on an old motherboard probably won't be powerful enough.

Whats the MAGIC system like ?
Is it more focused then before in terms of spells ?
Whats combat like ?

Finally can you use catnip spells and level up insanely fast :D

The magic is perfectly executed, I don't know about spells, and the combat, from a warrior's perspective, is a bit reminiscent of the hack-and-slash of Diablo II, but more realistic, and the blocking is amazing.
Too bad I only played it at a friends house, and my crappy Dell has absolutely nothing going for it. I do have a 360, though, and I am seriously considering purchasing it for that. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Ask and you shall receive!

Let's see if this works - I've been meaning to try it, so your post gave me the push I needed to do it. :D

You might notice the poor texture in the far-off hills - that's the price to pay to get everything else to work well using a mid-range card. Overall, I'm still extremely happy. I'm able to run a notch above medium settings, which is a lot more than I expected.

Edit - looking at these, I think a little bit has been lost in translation going from .bmp to .jpeg. Not too much, but a little.
