The FINAL Hex ffh2 Poster Contest - LAST ROUND!!

Oh and to be clear, I may not be much at the newer shooters, but I am putting it out there that if you think you are good at James Bond... you aren't. I will beat you and it doesn't matter what you post; my answer will be that I have absolutely no respect for your ability at that game and I will take you down. I was in my first year of university when that game came out and I lived in residence.

If you post back that you could beat me, or you know this friend of yours that can beat anyone at bond; the answer is simple: in a 10 point match, you or your friend would be lucky to get 3. In a 2 on 1 you might get a total of 5 between you, more likely 2.

Okay, that was fun. I don't like talking trash like that, but whenever Golden Eye comes up, I have to.

It's late....

Civilization IV
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Neverwinter Nights 2
Baldur's Gate 2
Morrowind
Master of Orion 2
Sim City 2

Oh yeah, Goldeneye was a real fun shooter even if it was on the console! We used to play with one shot kills and only pistols, had some great fun with that game. I can't say if I could have beat you now or even back then, but I was best of the guys who used to play. And it even was fun in singleplayer, with lots of stuff to unlock :).

Yeah, that was a great game. I hope no one took offence to my late night rant... thinking about that game just brought back a lot of memories (many of which involved trash talking!)

I don't want to win anything, I just feel like writing my own list.

1. Civ 2. Excluding #2 & 3 I've problably played this game as much as all others on this list combined.
2. Unreal tournament. Still play it fairly regularly, CTF instagib that is.
3. Utopia. Played it for years. Met hundreds if not thousands of people online doing so. The problem is you can't really play only when you want to. You need to login regularly or not play at all.
4. Morrowind. I had to wait years to play this one because the computer wasn't good enough and I didn't have money to buy a new one. Funny enough, I never once completed it. I still don't know what happends when you do. It just wasn't important.
5. Transport tycoon/TTD patch/Open TTD. #1-4 is a list of it's own. Here begins "the rest".
6. Settlers 2. I haven't played this game that much. It's on the list because I know if I had found it when it wasn't already many years old I would've played it much more.
7. Sim City 2000. I was terrible at this game. But that's also what made it fun - each time I'd manage to make my city a little larger than last time. Until I figured it out and it became too easy.
8. Civ 4. #5-7 is a list of it's own. Here begins "the rest of the rest". Civ 4 isn't that bad. I've just been playing computer games too long and I'm starting to get a little tired of it. (a little!)
9. Intergalactics. It's simple yet fun. Also doesn't take that long to play (usually less than an hour).
10. There are many games I can put at number ten. Problem is, I don't know which I like the most. Starcraft? Warcraft 2? Football manager? etc? Maybe I'll think of something later.

Were there knives in Bond? I can't remember for sure, but I don't think that there were... I liked Automatics, and I think the best level was the Stacks; it had a lot of glass to break!

3. Utopia.

Yea, 2 years cut out of my life :) Getting up at 3 AM to attack when I started to work had made me quit it :/

Tried oGame after it but compared to Utopia it was so....boring.

2. Unreal tournament. Still play it fairly regularly, CTF instagib that is.

CTF instagib is amazing... once had a 5 hour long game playing the opposing worlds map with this setting, 3-4 players per team (varied, not everyone can sit a 5 hour game out).

i still think this poll should be a top 15-20 though, so many more i've missed :(

1. Civilization 4
2. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
3. Command and Conquer Red Alert
4. Company of Heroes
5. Civ 2
6. Medieval Total War
7. Fallout
8. Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
9. Half Life 2
10. Call of Duty

Well I edited out my UX games... otherwise Anband, NetHack and Netrek would have to go on the list somehow...

Here's my ten games...the time spent playing them is in parentheses. My philosophy has been - play what you enjoy and respect other people's choices. After all, games are only diversionary entertainment, not real-life.

10. X-Wing/Tie Fighter - (2 months) One of the first games my son got when we got our first computer back in '98. I was never very good at it, but I loved the idea of flying Star Wars vehicles. And for the time, it was very cool-looking.

9. Star General - (3 months) My first TBS game, which opened the door to so much more...

8. Alpha Centauri - (3 months) Surprisingly, I never played this game as much as I thought I would (mainly because I was not a huge fan of the gameplay mechanics of the Sid Meier civ franchise until civ4), but it remains a game that I highly admire because of the great atmosphere it created with the seven factions.

7. Stronghold/Stronghold Crusader - (6 months) What is not to like about catapulting cows into castles to spread disease? For me, this was a nice balance between the frantic RTS gameplay and battles of AoE vs the more calming aspect of citybuilding in the Sierra series.

6. Rome Total War - (8 months) I had purchased Shogun and promptly returned it to the store - it just did not click for me. About a year later, I downloaded the Rome Total War demo and loved it and specifically asked for it for a Christmas gift. I am not a big fan of RTS games, but for some reason, I really enjoyed the mechanics of taking charge of the battlefield in this series.

5. Age of Wonders II/AoW II Shadow Magic - (12 months - still playing occasionally) I still maintain that this is the most graphically beautiful of the TBS genre fantasy games. Great storyline, and easy-to-grasp game mechanics. KISS, anyone...

4. Paradox titles, specifically EU2 and Crusader Kings - (12 months) The best example of games that simulate actual history without simply repeating it. Vicky and HoI are not on the list though because I am put off by the micromanagement....but that is just me. The only reason why I am not playing EU3 now is because the demo ran poorly on my somewhat antiquated system.

3. Civ4 - (2 years - still playing regularly) The best combination of all the TBS games that preceded it. And because of the modding capabilities and varied Mods, it is now the game that now ends up offering the most TBS bang for the buck for the player (great fan-created historical and fantasy mods), which ensures that this game will be on my system for a few more years.

2. Call to Power series - (6 years) Easily the most controversial games on my list, but IMO, it was a series that, due to the modding capabilities of the platform, was superior to civ1/civ2/civ3 when comparing TBS civ-games. Most people judge the series harshly (and rightfully so...) because the AI in the vanilla game was very weak, but the fan-modded games directly addressed that weakness and the modded games were very challenging. Plus, a host of things that were meant to eliminate tedious micromanagement, like the tile improvement system, as well as the combat system, were executed much better in the CTP franchise than they were in the civ franchise.

I got into game modding because of CTP2. My 'Cradle' Mod for CTP2 was one of the most downloaded and popular CTP2 Mods, and it served as the foundation for what I consider to be the best historically-themed TBS Fan Mod for ANY civ-style game. (The 'Ages of Man' Mod for CTP2)

Without that start, I would not be adding videos to FfH now...

And what many people are not totally aware of is that the CTP modding community had a large part in the shaping of civ4 through the beta-testing process. Like it or not, CTP's influence and fingerprints are all over civ4 - which has helped make civ4 the best TBS game now.

1. Pharaoh - (8 years - still play occasionally) I am a fan of the historical citybuilders created by Impressions, but this game remains my clear favorite of the group. I have probably logged more actual playing time on this particular game than on any other game on my list, and it has remained on my system since 1999. No other game has that claim.

I know my list is a lot different than others. There actually are not a lot of fantasy titles, and it is weighted away from RPG and RTS, which is more mainstream, if you look at the marketplace now.

Ultimately, it is all based on preference though.

The Grand Prize winner is

Dang - just read this post on 12/6, 12:12pm. I can see that you put your list in already so I know I won't be eligible but before I scroll down & read it I want to put up mine with comments because this is fun and I had completely forgotten about Master of Magic until I saw this thread. That game rocked.

1. Civ IV (Civ II is a VERY close second if we're getting into Civ specifics)
2. X-com
3. Master of Magic
4. Master of Orion II (though I get's the nostalga award)
5. SMAC
6. Age of Empires I (I for the nostalga/breakthrough even though II was better)
7. Dune II
8. Ultima VII (seriously, do you remember how freaking awesome this was?)
9. Descent
10. Baldur's Gate II (only #10 cuz I never finished it)

Just as importantly...non-PC games:
Super Mario Bros, Intellivision Advanced D&D (quite possible the best game ever made when compared to the games around it), Double Dribble, Dragon Warrior, Baseball Stars, Apocalypse MUD, Tetris (for the gameboy), Kings Bounty.

Wow, the above list is probably responsible for over a year of my life (not joking - I know I played 200+ hours of many of these games). Over~3% of my life has gone into the above. Maybe even ~5%. Pretty scary. I also realize I'm dating myself due to the number of 1990-1995 games on the list. Man, those were the days. I bet I could install Descent again, though, and play it for the rest of the day. In fact, I installed Diablo II a couple of weeks ago...

[EDIT] Wow, I just realized that Doom didn't make many (or any?) lists. I know the lists tended to be more fantasy/RPG but now that I think about it Doom should have been ~#3 on my list. That game took more time out of my life than I care to remember. Gotta love university computer labs, though.

Thanks again for the contest hex.

I will say that AoW:SM is the most underrated tactical game of all time. I still play it regularly and am amazed at it's beauty and gameplay.

Hoooray! I is winnahr(ish)!

But I must say congrats to onedreamer - you had some incredible similarities there.

It was nice, but I prefer AOW one (still playing sometimes :)).
That was much better balanced in terms of factions.
