The Future of NESing

No, I will never endorse a move, ever. It would likely prove to be the death of NESing. I do NOT want to see that happen.

Now, if CFC itself started to decline, then yea, we should try to move.

Oh, and I would not mind being that NESer mod someone was talking about :mischief: Seriously, maybe an NESer mod would be a good thing for the NESing forum. I know it's an extra burden on Turner to monitor this place. I'm not exactly a fan of the spam either...Turner is just doing his job.

Seconded, and quoted for truth. Us old crotchedy NESers abhor change.

- Agree with the idea of a NESer mod - we're somewhat ah, unique in our needs, and it might be best to find some responsible from amongst us to police us rather than taxing the current mod pool. Since he's so often the one who reports us, Reno might work. ;)
- Disagree with the idea of removing the post count. Really, most of our posters with huge post counts often frequent other forum sections like OT as well. All it does is slow it down, and only sometimes are posts a complete waste. The worst spam here is sometimes more informative than that in OT - it's the random penguin / polar bear / NAO / I hate seafood type of post that really just needs to stop. The vast bulk of the reason this is even being discussed is because of the frequency of people acting foolish and getting topics reported by others. In favor of mob justice here.
- Conditionally Agree with the idea of moving to Colosseum. I say conditionally because it would be prudent to at the very least keep a link to here (or just link here to the Colosseum). Then again I was in favor of linking to the Civ4 S&T forum too, so what do I know?

Although moving off-site would offer the most flexibility and independence, it also carries the most risk, as Erik pointed out. Acknowledging that our section is somewhat different from most others (as he and others have likewise pointed out; we are the second largest subforum aside from OT and our "most famous" members generally have some of the highest post counts on the whole forum) seems the most prudent and balanced option.

I think the nomination of one or two NES forum mods, and a general move towards greater maturity would go a long way.

[EDIT] Also, Gelion, I'd like to say that I don't think a NES Wiki was an entirely bad idea. It was poorly executed, poorly edited, poorly managed, and ultimately useless, to be sure, but the concept was sound. We just seem to lack someone of sufficient qualifications (obsessive-compulsive disorder) to sit down and craft a well-written one. Generally agree with your other points though.

Erik, did I ever say that spam was an integral part of NESing? I think that's paraphrasing a bit.

it's the random penguin / polar bear / NAO / I hate seafood type of post that really just needs to stop.
Those make up a miniscule portion of the posts. Would you be happier if I put mine in spoilers? While they are meta-stories in a game, they are still stories.

I would agree with sending a NES to off-topic or colosseum as a test... were I not dedicated to LINESII, I would do it myself.

With the mods' permission of course.

The spam issue is a personal one. Each of us decides everytime we post whether or not to make it useful, participatory, entertaining, or worthless. The young age of most NESers will tilt the balance a bit towards spam. The nature of the NES process makes it difficult. Waiting for updates, especially when a player is anticipating actions of consequence to unfold can create the urge to try and hurry things along with spam. Tht's why I tried teh While we wait thread as a way to concentrate the less useful posts in a single place.

But to be honest, the spam question is all about self discipline.

I am against moving NESing off CFC; I am against eliminating pc for NESing; I am for a link to the Colesseum.

I really and sincerely doubt age has ANYTHING to do with it.

Yeah, das is only... 15 isn't he? I can't ever remember him getting in moderator troubles.

As I said, ultimately, it is all about self discipline and knowing when to stop useless posting, but as a rule younger people tend to be less disciplined than older people. And yes there certainly could be exceptions to that rule; you might even be one.

But just in case you didn't know, the brain doesn't complete its development until a person is in their mid twenties and the last piece to fall into place is the part that handles "judgment". :p

Even though he has the most mature attitude on the forum IMO.

Age has NOTHING to do with ability or intelligence. Also, if moving would help NESing, I would be for it. At the moment, I think moving would HURT it, so I vote to stay. While there are not any Civ 3 NESes at the moment, it does work in a story forum.

More people frequent the OT forums than the civ3 stories and tales forums at this point. By far. I think we're more than 50% of the traffic in civ3 stories and tales. The 'pond drying up' is the primary reason I would want a move to a different part of CFC. I DO NOT want to move to a new website, as I agree it will kill us.

And as for my idea, which seems more popular than I thought: How would we get one of us promoted to a Moderator? Turner?

I honestly do not think we spam to increase post count, just we think that we are in a chat room or something, so I vote NO to removing the post counts.

Still, no excuse for spam, but I'm just saying.

Surge of Newbs can be good or bad. Depends on how serious they are. If they aren't good to start with they can get better, but if they aren't serious about it THAT will be the death of NESing

Das has certaintly gotten into moderator trouble. Warnings, mostly. Me too.

I suppose our slightly sarcastic and occasionaly vitriolic attitude (for me, especially towards newer players (:p)) has something to do with this. However, I can say with confidence that in our battles with storm, I never got warned :p

I don't think a surge of newer players will be good. Occasionally, we get a good player, but most of the time, a surge of new players will mean a degradation in the quality of NESing.

I think everyones been warned. Some banned :mischeif:

Anyway, I underestimated the situation. We are going to be modded until we are on too tight a leash at this rate. We shoul move to a different part of the forum But even better that NESer mod would be nice, but I doubt, like Turner said, we won't get any special treatment, so I seriously doubt we will ever get a mod of our own.

Not really. If they arent serious, then they wont stay, but really we dont constantly need new newbs. NESer average life is about 2 or so years, so we are fine in the amount of NESer category.

I do not agree. Turner should not look at us differently and make a NESer a mod just because we want one. But if he agrees, hey I'm not complaining ;)

A surge of newbies would be fine if we set it up right. We should fix up the Guide to NESing thread first, so everyone knows what's going on, and make sure our NES Rules are clear. If we do those things, I think we will ride out the surge of spam/newbies, and eventually end up in a much better place than we started.

@Dreadnaught-There are already forum specific moderators.

So it boils down to staying here and dying a slow death, or moving and having the IQ level drop 50 points?

that is a bunch of crap panda, people get better over time, and its not about good players, its about players period
