The Great Union of the North

VikingsRoerichPainting.jpg

Here in Stockholm on this cold winter day we mourn the loss of our once great King Eadgils. He who unified the Norse peoples from the fertile lands of the Kingdom of Roskilde to the frigid waters of the Northern Sea. With the help of the warrior Beowulf, he defeated his tyrannical uncle Onela and brought an era of peace to Scandinavia. Alas he has been killed by his sly rival, Hrólfr Kraki, who slayed him as he bent over to retrieve his mystical ring, Svíagris. We take comfort in knowing our king resides among the gods in Valhalla, but we are saddened he was unable to partake in our world long enough to lead the Norse people to eternal prosperity. Now we must make our way without him, a new king must succeed him, and another after him. It is up to you, the jarls of each and every corner of Scandinavia that will determine the fate of the Norse. Will we become traders who venture to the farthest reaches of Midgard in search of luxuries worthy only of the gods, will we be great raiders who take the riches of every town and village in our sight or will we divide amongst ourselves and let unification become forgotten by our sons? It is time for the jarls to decide: who will be the next great king of the north.

Welcome, Young writer, to the land where the strong control all and the weak "cultured" people burn, where the advanced destroy the primitive, where the UN is a tool for world domination, where democracy is just a means of building things quicker while communism is the most effective economy for large empires more often than not, where those who conquer the quickest and than keep control of their spoils are the most respected, where men love to start as cavemen on their trip to the cosmos, the heavens fall twice with incantations of unbelievable power, where the ultimate religious authority is a white, radioactive rock that can burst forth sometimes with the radiance of a thousand suns[1], where the forecast is continued war in a hell-hole of eternal war against Eurasia Eastasia with a 100% chance of mushroom clouds, or have been forced to abandon their own home due to thermonuclear warfare for the stars. All at the dance of those voyaging writers, who place with the lives of trillions for the purposes of their game.

This is Civfanatics. Only The the strong will flourish under its members iron rule and titanium fists. The weak will be perished, the strong ganged on, the cunning survive.
Do you have what it takes, oh maybe wise and definitely greedy writer?

The Reign of King Eadgils

After defeating his uncle at the Battle on the Ice of Lake Vänern, Eadgils united the greatest kingdoms in the south of Scandinavia under one flag. No longer will they fight petty wars, but fight alongside one another against foreign powers. The kingdoms are prepared to expand, with a large army leftover from the wars and a growing population.

King Ealdgils's son, Eysteinn, took a gambit and led a raiding party across the western sea. He discovered a pair of larges isles, the raiders disembarked and looted much of the northern parts of the two islands. The party was successful and the boats returned full of gold and slaves. Plans are already being made for future raids to the isles.

The raiding party also brought back with them a new type of truffle that thrived in the forests around Stockholm. People in the city were overjoyed at the new luxury and many citizens that took up truffle hunting grew very rich.

Expeditions to the south up the rivers of continental Europe led us to the discovery of a large empire who call themselves Byzantines. These people may follow a false god, but they are strong and have rich ports. The king promptly opened up trade routes with the foreigners.

It was well known that during the wars King Eadgils had taken his wife from a man whom he had killed during the wars, along with the man's gold. But Unbeknownst to the king, his queen had had a son with her former husband and that son now sought revenge for the death of his father. The son, known as Hrólfr Kraki, marched to Stockholm to reclaim his father's gold with his twelve best berserkers. King Eadgils's men tried to kill Hrólfr as him and his soldiers approached the town, but failed. When the queen discovered what King Eadgils had tried to do to her son, she became outraged and sent to Hrólfr to see her once he arrived in Stockholm. Hrólfr went to his mother and she proceeded to give him the king's finest jewels and gold wears, including the king's famous ring, Svíagris. Hrólfr and his men then took the king's best armors and horses and swiftly left Stockholm. Upon discovering his empty stable, King Eadgils and his soldiers gave chase to the thieves. After two days of traveling, the king and his men crossed the river Fyrisvellir. On the other side they found the king's gold spread all about the ground. The men approached with caution, suspicious of an ambush. Then the king saw his ring, Svíagris, and he bent down to retrieve it. Hrólfr Kraki then stepped out from behind a tree and slashed open King Eadgils's back with his broadsword. He promptly swung his sword again and decapitated the king, grabbed the head by the hair and let out a yell louder than the largest war horn. Eadgils's men froze at the sight of their decapitated king and when they came to, surrendered to their king's slayer. Hrólfr, his men and his prisoners returned to Stockholm to claim the throne. Hrólfr threw open the doors of the great hall only to find the jarls huddled around talking, but as the doors crashed they all turned to look at the champion and the bloody head of the king.

Eysteinn! Death to Hrólfr Kraki! Death to them all!

This should be nice :D . I almost wrote a Viking story once and titled it "empire of ice" :D . That never materialized though, recently I completed a Viking diplomatic victory (my only one !) which was almost a domination game :p .

Well I vote Eysteinn

Hròlfr Kraki
He had all the rights to enact vengeance upon the killer of his father, and yet he is willing to forgive the killer's son (who is also his half brother) and let him be King of Sweden.

Eysteinn

You know what'd be cool, you have the losing side stage a rebellion attempt XD ! Then the lords who elected the king pledge their swords to you and there's an intense amount of intrigues and politicking to manage the vast alliance ;) . How's that idea ?

See, intrigue and conspiracy aren't fun or interesting if it happens in every story every single update :p

I didn't say it isn't realistic. I'm saying you don't want to overdo "intrigue" in this whole thread. When something happens unexpectedly it's great, but if it happens every month or every other month it gets repetitive and dull. That's why my Mexico story isn't going straight from one upheaval to another, like real Mexico did :p

The leaders and storyline for the first 250 years are loosely based off of the Norse Sagas, which are already a huge mess of alliances, betrayals and rebellions so something like that will probably pop up soon.:king:
