The game is a refreshing mixture of familiarity with new features. Best of all is probably that you do not encounter Pokemon from any of the previous games until after you beat the Elite Four. Triple Battles are interesting, the fully animated sprites are awesome. They've added seasons, which change both the Pokemon you find and the environment you find them in (there's a mountain that's really only accessible in the winter time). Shaky grass/whirling dust is a very neat feature, and I like the set of dual rivals you have. Team Plasma is weird.
There are some things that annoy me, though. First, they took away the HG/SS feature of your lead Pokemon following you around. Sadface. Second, moves are becoming more powerful. I don't just mean in their power ratings, but what they do also. For example, there are new moves in this generation that increase 3 stats. Three stats! And many others that are guaranteed to increase one stat every turn. Not a chance, a guarantee. It reminds me of the trend in Magic: The Gathering towards a more Yu-gi-Oh style of play, where big and powerful guys enter the field almost immediately, and devastating spells or abilities can be played within the first few turns, and exist in myriads. Yes, it adds challenges to the game, but it makes winning itself all the easier for any one person. The drawn-out battle of wits and stamina is fading.

All in all, I think it's a great game, probably better than Diamond and Pearl.
