The Largest Street Gang in America: Unbridled Police Brutality

Even almost all of the bad cops are smart enough not to show attitude towards those who appear to be rather affluent white people. Gee, what a surprise.

Good point. I am somewhat of an affluent white person, in fact.

Forma saves the day!

How come everyone who likes cops assumes that anyone who doesn't is a violent, stupid criminal instead of someone with a different opinion?

Right. Because everybody who gets harassed by the police is a "dumbass".

No, but people who fight with the cops are indeed being dumbass. Its a fight they arent going to win. If your harassed, dont fight back and lodge a complaint after the fact. Simple.

I don't see how any sort of statute depriving people from publicly recording the actions of the police will stand up. You obviously do not need the consent of every single person you videotape or photograph in public.

I dont mind people filming police so much. What I do mind is the video being used as conclusive evidence when it still only shows a single frame of reference. Often there are still things the camera doesnt see, and that needs to be taken into account as well.

Sure, I am white, but I am hardly affluent. I drive a old beat up truck, and I certainly dont drive around in it in a coat and tie.

Should I now go grab some youtube videos of cops harassing white folks?

In other words, people who are legally trying to defend themselves against the criminal violent acts of some police are "dumbasses" for doing so?

Got any examples of that ever happening?

Not all that resist arrest are doing so in the face of harassment, and from the earlier link it would appear that less than 10% of all harassment claims are actually found valid. So yeah, I stand by my point, if you fight with a cop your're a dumbass.

Sure you may have a right to fight back if truly harassed, just like you have a right to keep your mouth shut, but you probably lack the ability to be successful in either case if you are in the habit of being on the wrong side of the cops.

Got any examples of that ever happening?

Actually, yes. There was one some years ago, even discussed on this website, by a LAPD cop that had a video showing him slamming a kids head repeatedly on the hood of his patrol car. The films vantage point however, had the patrol car interposed between the cop and kid, and the person filming them. What the film didnt show was the kid grabbing the cop by the balls with his hands behind him and squeezing the cops balls as hard as he could. The cop was slamming him on the hood to make the kid let go of his balls.

Some posters may remember that thread. I know I do. But thats my point. Cameras are great at recording whats in front of the lens, but the lens doesnt capture everything. I dont think thats something even to be debated since its so common sense. But hey, whatever makes you happy.

There are plenty of cases where "dumbasses" have had to literally fight for their own lives against criminal cops. It just doesn't happen to white people who live in nice communities very often. In those rare situations, I would tend to agree with you that you should submit to their authority in most situations.

u.s. Department of justice report on police use of force released in 2001 indicated that in 1999, "approximately 422,000 people 16 years old and older were estimated to have had contact with police in which force or the threat of force was used."[13] research shows that measures of the presence of black and hispanic people and majority/minority income inequality are related positively to average annual civil rights criminal complaints.[14]

@Systerion: Yeah, being a cop is a dangerous job. Not every use of force is harassment, surely you realize this. And if its whites that get this priviledge and its a race thing....then why arent more asians complaining of harassment? My thinking on this would undoubtedly be deemed rasist, but I think it boils down to recognition and acceptance of authority along racial lines.

or poverty, but recognizing that would be a recognition of need to change economic distribution and that's baaaaaaaaad.

Maybe cops are racist in different ways towards different races. In the sense that they're more likely to be violent with black or hispanic people, but will be overall more disrespectful of the language, culture, and accent of asians.

And sYTerion. There's no second s, I get that so often.

What is funny is that it even frequently occurs with black and Latino cops. But as the article I recently posted in the Arizona immigration thread shows, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans are apparently typically more law-abiding than even WASPs, despite being constantly profiled by the police in some of the border states.

Regardless of what you think, not being able to record a public servant performing his duties (in public) is complete lunacy.

If the government can videotape me in a public place, I should be able to videotape the government in a public place.

What I find interesting is that law enforcement (at least publicly) seems to be in favor of being filmed by their dash cams while doing traffic stops, etc. The common sentiment they express is that it helps to protect them from false allegations. All of the footage with motorist behaving badly certainly makes the news.

I guess they want the filming to be done on their terms though. When you know where the cameras are aimed you can govern your conduct accordingly.

After all, what exactly do they have to hide besides their own incompetence or ciminal activities.

This goes back to my idea of having independent civlian review boards with complete access to all police video. Let's use their own "evidence" to separate out the criminals from the non-criminals and the honest from the hopelessly corrupt.
