The name Adolf

usually you don't see the name "Adolf" being used very often, because of hitler, even though it was a very popular name even in a America these days. I just met a man name Adolf at the park, however he tells me that he just tells people his name is abe becasue he doesnt want to be associated with hitler. He was born I think in 1937 or something and that was before the name fell out of style..


when do you think our society can get over the whole Adolf name fiasco and allow our children to be named Adolf?

I doubt it will happen, Adolf is so strongly associated with Hitler that few sane parents would ever think of naming the child that and without people named Adolf doing good things and getting recognition for it the association will stand. A sort of Catch-22 I suppose.

I actually apparently had someone in my family tree a long time ago, at the turn of the century back in Switzerland with Adolf as his first name.

The name is sort of like Jesus. You never give your kid either of those names, but for VERY different reasons.

The first name of my PE teacher in highschool was Adolf. To make it worse, his last name started with H as well. I really wonder what his parents were thinking.

Anyways, I doubt people will want to name their children out of a mass-murderer on purpose. Unless you're a neo-nazi or an idiot. So yea, Adolf has a stigma to it not. Much like Communism does to most Americans who see it as a flawed system that will never work.

I've heard Attila is a popular name in Hungary.

"Genghis" and "Caligula" weren't the actual names of the gentlemen in question, but respectively part of a title and a nickname.

... not that I commonly run into people called Temmüjin or Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus either.

Yea, Atilla is very common in Hungary ... but the name is read in a strange way ... it sounds like Otila. Or maybe they just have a bad accent.

Julius is preety common to ... well not in that form.
