Newt Gingrich lacks the moral character to serve as President, his second ex-wife Marianne told ABC News, saying his campaign positions on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of family values do not square with what she saw during their 18 years of marriage.

In her first television interview since the 1999 divorce, to be broadcast tonight on Nightline, Marianne Gingrich, a self-described conservative Republican, said she is coming forward now so voters can know what she knows about Gingrich.

In her most provocative comments, the ex-Mrs. Gingrich said Newt sought an "open marriage" arrangement so he could have a mistress and a wife.
....
She said Newt moved for the divorce just months after she had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, with her then-husband present.

"He also was advised by the doctor when I was sitting there that I was not to be under stress. He knew," she said.

Gingrich divorced his first wife, Jackie, as she was being treated for cancer. His relationship with Marianne began while he was still married to Jackie but in divorce proceedings, Marianne said.
So, with the full interview of Gingrich's second wife coming out tonight on ABC, do you think Newt will suffer a fate similar to Herman Cain? (We all know Newt won't drop out over this, but his support numbers could suffer.)

It's possible.

I think this pretty is bad, but a lot of it seems to be what everyone already expected. I would expect if he drops out in the next few days will largely still depend on his performance in South Carolina, but I wouldn't be shocked if this does in his campaign long term. Then again, Newt has an awful big head and might not let something like this deter him.

I could argue both sides of this one. Herman Cain had a big ego too, but we are talking about the supreme definer of civilization here.

The difference is everyone's known about Newt's moral failings for a long time now. This is just a little more kindling on that fire.

It won't change his supporters who are hypocrites on as they've already resolved their cognitive dissonance.

This basically.

If something is going to knock Newt out in one hit, it has to be something that's been under the rug, not public knowledge.

I swear, if the GOP....ugh. Well, I'm voting Romney regardless in November. Be it by checking the box or by writing him in as I did in 2008. I refuse to vote for Newt just as I refused to vote for McCain.

While I certainly think the allegations are plausible, I have to question the timing. She's clearly come forward now to derail his campaign. And that does speak to some vindictiveness / bitterness on her part (not trying to parrot Newt's staff here though) so I can't say her claims are without bias.

I think at this point it'll still be Newt keeping the not-Mitt vote. Who else would collect it---Rand? Obama? :rotfl:

I don't care. I'm just saying.

That, and they are running out of time to find the ultimate non-Romney candidate. Once votes start getting cast, they gotta settle on some guy (or gal, but that's no longer applicable in this election cycle).

Perry dropping out is helping Newt. Insofar as there is even a chance for a non-Romney candidate to make it he's still doing fine. As others have said, unlike Herman Cain's scandals everyone has known about Newt's marriage history since forever ago.

AHh don't I look silly now

But that raises the question - why the hell would you shorten Newton to Newt? Doesn't Newton sound a lot more intelligent and civilized? Newt to me sounds more like an insult.

I suppose times could have changed and back when he was born (or whenever he started going with Newt) it didn't sound as silly.

Anyway, tangent over, carry on

Irrelevant. Gingrich doesn't have the steam to catch up to Romney right now. Besides, Romney is the best guy to take on Obama.

Extra marital affairs and premarital affairs are not hanging offences with Republicans
Anything smacking of homosexuality thou is death.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here ;) and say no, Newt is not dead.

I've been making basically your same point for a while now. Only I always regarded it as a little more probable than not, that not-Mitt would win the nomination.

Nobody could possibly explain it better than Stephen Colbert:
