The Newt going the way of the Hermie?

Well, I'm voting Romney regardless in November. Be it by checking the box or by writing him in as I did in 2008.

You... of all the people to WRITE IN, you picked Mittens? WTH dude.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here ;) and say no, Newt is not dead.

I've been making basically your same point for a while now. Only I always regarded it as a little more probable than not, that not-Mitt would win the nomination.

Nobody could possibly explain it better than Stephen Colbert:

Fast forward to about 2:00 and prepare to laugh yer posterior off.

As a dedicated Colbert fan, I saw that when it originally aired. :)

Gingrich's victory in South Carolina was a massive upset--I generally don't expect polls to change 20+ points in a single week, and yet that's exactly what happened. As of now, 538 has him favored 3:1 to win in Florida too.

However, in the post you quoted, I was saying that they had to settle on the non-Romney candidate for this election cycle (since the moderate "Romney" candidate is obviously Romney), and I think that is what we have seen. It's a Newt v. Mitt race now, since Santorum, the only non-Romney contender remaining, hasn't gotten any momentum out of Iowa, finished poorly in South Carolina, and isn't getting any traction in Florida. Now that votes are being cast, it'll be tough for him to both overcome Gingrich and take the #2 spot (in terms of delegates).

And yes, I know Ron Paul is still running, but he's not a true non-Romney, as far as I'm concerned. He's an a-Romney. :)

EDIT:
Isn't Newt doing better now? I think polls even show he has a lead in Florida over Mitt.

538 has Newt favored 3:1 to win Florida, and it seems to be fairly stable. Romney is in some serious danger.

So, with the full interview of Gingrich's second wife coming out tonight on ABC, do you think Newt will suffer a fate similar to Herman Cain? (We all know Newt won't drop out over this, but his support numbers could suffer.)

This is surprising to you? I've been, since 2008, a vocal Mitt supporter. Of all the people I could write in, why wouldn't I write in Mitt given my support?

That's the part that surprises me. The guy has no core values and is basically the John Kerry of the GOP.

In what sense does he lack "core values"? It seems to me that his "core values" are simply in the mainstream, so don't elicit the same volume of comment as the various lunatics that the Republican Party has managed to dredge up from the bottom of whatever lake these creatures live in.

While we're talking about "core values", I find it hilarious that most of the Republican criticism of Gingrich consists of "he's not a real conservative".

His "core values" keep changing and are always whatever he thinks people want to hear.

Mitt Romney has publicly flipped on abortion, gun control, gay marriage, insurance mandates, and other political issues that are very important to Conservatives.

In what way are you hearing that Newt isn't conservative enough?

For starters, I don't think that cheating on your wife is a conservative value...

Cheating on your wife is not an anything value, it'S a common human vice found across the spectrum, and across the breadth of leadership and presidential skills, from best to worse.

I think perhaps we're not all on the same page as to what is meant by "core values". To me, these seem like specific issues, rather than the basic political-ethical principles that underlie them. The subjective weight lent to any given issue isn't a direct indicator of its philosophical centrality, especially not with- as conservative abortion politics- they're so drenched in emotivism.

In current US politics, "core values" and "stances on key issues" might as well be the same thing. There just isn't room for a varied view on many of these things in the minds of those who tell others what they need to believe.
