The map on the thread is not complete, though a complete version has been made. Ethiopia is the right size of the effective area controlled by the government, while Egypt is suitable for NESing purposes. Thanks for the suggestions.

K; sorry; I didn't know if you wanted to leave any blank spaces and I'm kind of new so I don't really know who the experienced people are yet.

Are any of the countries I asked for good for me, or should I pick a smaller one?

Yeah, I did want blank spaces, and I do realize that my views of "Civilized" and "uncivilized" can be disputed extensively. Mostly I was focused on making things more open for would-be imperialists.

Japan could be a fun nation to develop into an industrial power, but I'd highly recommend having a knowledge on how and why they did develop first.

Mexico is America's sole major power, economically and militarily. However, they face a massive variety of ethnic troubles and internal unrest. Mexico is likely to be a challenge to anyone who plays it.

Russia is definitely a simpler nation to play and much more open. At this time, the tsar enjoys more power and popularity then he will within the next hundred years historically. You'd have a few years of "free time" in which you could do virtually whatever you want, but I'd recommend once again looking things up down the line.

For newer players, I'd highly recommend any of the American (North or South) nations. They have by far the most flexibility in play styles, and will be less tied to RL historical events then the historical empires will. As an American nation, there will be historical occurances, but the complete difference between this timeline and our history allows for nearly any possibilities you'd like, story or gameplay.

Sigh... So hard to choose...
I guess I'll take Russia, since Japan's already taken and Mexico... well the enemy of my enemy is my friend (unless someone starts a war in Europe and as a result Mexico and I end up sharing a border...)

Btw, I know my history pretty well (AP WH+wiki+curiosity), so ya... (summary: Japan developed because they noticed that they were so far behind the "West" and, unlike in China the "lords," liked change. They ended their era of isolationism and basically copied Western machinery. They soon fired the samurai because they did not want to adapt to a world where you didn't need to know how to use a sword and where almost anyone could be a relatively skilled soldier. However, they did not have many raw materials, and as a result had to import heavily. This is also one of the reasons why they invaded Indonesia (which they won't have to do in this timeline = less dependence on Western powers at mid-early stages of industrialization, = more power, = if Russia starts out as slow as it did IRL, Japan>Russia, = also Japan > China if it's as neo-confucianist as IRL, = Japan=Asia, = Mexico fights Japan, = if Japan gets allies, it becomes #1; else, Mexico becomes #1.)
Right?

EDIT: Just noticed, Japan would have to fight Prussia over dominance of Indonesia = one less possible ally and a lot more possible enemies.

Edited out because I was being an idiot.

Er, dibs on France - if they haven't already been made.

I will be taking China. If I overlooked something and it's already taken, then Virginia.

Canada or Quebec would be fun in a disunited NA.

preferably canada.

I'd like Brazil.

I'd like Brazil.

That was... unexpected.

Japan developed because of a united national identity, something that was lacking in China until the Revolution, and the complete destruction of the reactionary government in the Heiin War, to be replaced by a modernizing regime, which, as before, took Sun Yat-sen's revolution to topple the Confucianists and Manchu and the final victory of the Communists in 1949 to finish.

completely and utterly. I never would have guessed. Though my Canada/Quebec isnt either, since I have played as both anglo and franco canada quite a few times. Never out of SUDBURY though.

a nation not on the list, just added:

Nova Scotia
Republic: Whig Party

I'd try something else, but Brazil looks to have potential this time around. :p

I'm willing to give Mexico a try. hmm, now to chose a personality.. I'm not going to say I reserve it, for if one of the greats want to play it, I'll chose another nation. but other then that, DIBS!

I'll want to take... something. I was thinking about the Americas, but that's becoming very crowded very quickly.

Meh, I change my mind. China for me.
