The Official Perfection KOs Creationism Thread Part Two: The Empiricists Strike Back!

I just read a catholic theologist debater in this country the other day (we don't have many catholics) being all excited about ID because the country needed more spiritualism.. yes, that was her reasoning.

I don't understand why some people feel science rules out the wonder and magic that is life.

Neither do I. For instance, I believe that God created all the elements heavier than iron that we need for life. However, the idea that He did so by causing enormous stars (so big I can't wrap my head around the idea) to essentially explode (ie go supernova) doesn't lessen it for me. In fact, all of science has always made God's creation seem more 'wonderful and magical' for me.

There's this bird in the South American rainforest.. I wish I could remember its name. It's probably about the size of a blackbird, maybe just a sparrow.. I saw a segment on it on National Geographic tv and it has the most remarkable mating dance. The male moves so quickly that it's impossible to see with the eye, you need a high speed camera to see what the hell is going on. They will do a moonwalk style glide up and down the branches along with other stuff that just knocks your socks off!

When I saw it the first time I was yelling at the tv because it was so cool! The second time I was dancing along!

I hope I get to see it a third time so I can get the name of that bird. Without the slow motion camera (science) we'd never see all the cool moves that bird pulls off, and I tell you, you're in for a treat! Fred Astaire, eat your heart out!

Although the birds are common, the exact nature of their mating ritual wasn't known until Bostwick captured it on her high-speed video camera 500 frames a second, to be exact. Played back in slow motion, the birds' choreography of courtship was visible for the very first time.

Did the birds have a golden head?

Edit: dude, we so cross-posted ...

Edit x2: I suddently wonder what this has to do with creationism?

Sweet, I got the plugin working! Remember to choose the LARGE video option!

It's a short clip from the segment, but it's got the moondance! Is that cool or WHAT?! I can watch that bird do its thing for hours, it's so great :goodjob:

Who cares about creationism, we've got the Manakins rockin' here!

Does anyone know of a way I can copy the realvideo stream onto my harddrive so I can save it?

With Win XP IIRC a copy should be stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Computer\Local Settings\Temp.

Yes and all the fundementalists have done is try and take all the wonder and magic out of creation(however it happened)

In Creationist world. No Evolution no richness of life no diversification, 6000 light years closed universe. No chance of life elsewhere in the Universe. We are alone confined in a tiny prison with no chance of ever meeting anyone interesting. :goodjob: church way to take the wonder out of God's creation.

That's so true. Even if the science behind Creationism weren't complete bilge, I don't think I could ever accept it. There was a time in my life when I though that to maintain my faith I had to reject the theory of evolution. I still found it more fascinating than YEC. And now that I know that it is true, it is even better. Creationism is boring (in addition to being unscientific, and quite frankly it tends to contradicty the Bible at times, even).

the bible:) nope that's all I got:D

true but if I pull one bit of information out of the bible like the world is 6000 years old and I go tally this up with the bible it should in theory agree with this statement;). However I concede that even the bible disagrees with itself but then they are two different books from two different times with two different rule systems. If they agreed with each other I'd be more surprised.

Possibly amusingly, my brother is if anything a stauncher atheist than I, but he says he'd aesthetically prefer if a big guy in the sky had purposely designed the world to the evolutionary account.

My aesthetics are wired more like yours; I find the evolutionary picture incomparably grander and more fascinating than YECism.

In fact, my first reaction when I ran across YECism was that is was an insult to the dignity of my beloved dinosaurs! :crazyeye::cool:

No, the bible is not two different books, it's a whole series of books and stories and myths put together. From the very beginning of the bible it contradicts itself (it has two different accounts of the creation) and it continues into the new testament stories.

Pulling out specific bits of information and comparing it with some other specific information while completely ignoring everything in the context that contradicts it is meaningless. It's similar to the clips on the Letterman show where they cut various words from a speech by a politician into one sentence (like Cheney saying 'I like to [] go kill and murder [] people I [] hunt [] with [] for my [] amusement' Very funny, but that's about it :)
