PyScenario had a more interesting approach that could rename cities based on their location rather than their original name...
That way the player could even rename his towns to "Beverley Hills 90210" and a Spanish conquest would still trigger "Los Angeles"![]()
The issue with that is that it doesn't make all too much historical sense. For example, the CityNameManager Thread created a native names for Aztecs/Maya/Inca all across the Americas, named after local tribes. For example, an Aztec city founded on Washington DC would be named Susquehannock. But I doubt that in real life, a conquering European force that captured this city would name it "Washington." They'd probably just Europeanize the name, to something like Susquehanna.
