[RD] The Republican nomination

I know it seems improbable now but I still think it is going to be Bush. I'd put good money on that. Same reason I thought it would be Romney last go 'round, even when it seemed like the primary season was a revolving door of anyone but Romney.

I'd have agreed before last night. The problem is that where the 2012 primary was Romney and the revolving nut jobs, where this time there are a number of people vying for that position of the not a nut who will eventually be settled on. That group has to start thinning out, and of the four Bush looked weakest last night.

So I didn't have a chance to watch the debate yet. Any particular funny Trump-isms or silly Republican changes of note that I should be on the look out for when I watch it later today?

There were a fair number of good one liners. Most of the best ones being attacks on the moderators. Faux News is gleefully using those in their "NBC was the biggest loser" analysis, which of course plays directly into their no-news-is-good-news-but-Faux-News market niche. I would call the Bush attack on Rubio and Rubio crushing the weak serve down the line for a clear point the most important moment.

I'd say the trick to "getting" the debate is to keep two perspectives in mind, because the subculture of the Republicans has become so isolated. There will be sound bites that play to everyone else, and there will be soundbites that play to Republicans on their chosen media that no one else takes seriously.

For example Rubio goes into great detail on the Faux News number one meme out of the Benghazi hearings. Most people will look at that and say "why?" since the whole witch hunt has been pretty well established to have been a political stunt that didn't really work, at best, or may have backfired completely. So it is a moment that seems like it would have been a good time to make a trip to the fridge. But in the isolated world of the Republican subculture it plays entirely the opposite way. They still chant "Benghazi!" five times a day while kneeling towards Chicago, and they are being constantly told that Hillary will be going to jail any minute now. In that world that moment is almost certain to be the widest played clip from the entire debate.

Frightening isn't it?

I see him as a lower average fright candidate because despite him as president being particularly frightening, he's more likely to lose in the general.

Attack the media seems to be a theme here. That always works.

Everyone seemed to get their shot in, and the moderators basically helped them do it.

Except El Arbusto.

"Dumb biased reporter, who isn't repeating our factually incorrect statements uncritically. No place in a debate."

Christie may have picked the wrong time to come out spouting law, order, and support our cops no matter what.

Not to old whiteys who lived through the 60s and are voting in GOP primaries.

Brother of last president to create an entire cabinet level department says "the solution from the left is always to create more government."

He then turned around and confusingly kinda advocated for regulating fantasy football but not.

Ted Cruz was not noticeable.

Are you kidding us? He started off the Newt Gingrich-esque media attack feeding frenzy.

Trump scores in his close.

Agree with this, I don't see much movement afterwards except for Bush continuing to crater and the likely suspects picking up his support (probably Rubio, but maybe Christie and in third place Kasich because he played up the compassion too much for that party).

Romney was never as weak as ¿¡jeb!? "it connotes excitement" bush is now.

I think Tim's notes are pretty good. Trump isn't dropping as many good lines but bashed the moderators a few times and in his closing statement.

So this morning's hilarity...

Faux News and the echo chamber are rumbling out the message that "the dirty liberals at CNBC, in an obvious attempt to make our boys look bad, demanded that the audience not clap or cheer for them during the debate." They then play a clip of the standard pre debate announcement. I can't wait for someone to do a word by word comparison in the delivery of the standard pre debate announcements done before all of the debates, including the one hosted by Faux News. If there is more than a three word variance, with those being on the order of using "the" instead of "a," I will eat my hat.

Most general election debates are like that. I don't have the numbers in front of me to figure out whether that is true for primary debates as well.

I'm pretty sure it is on the "setting up the debate" checklist from the RNC.

If so, they utterly failed in enforcing that. I remember several applause lines.

It always fails, to some degree. Probably more so last night since the candidates actively tried to get all order thrown out.

Ted Cruz was not noticeable.
Which debate were you watching. Ted Cruz was the big winner.

I grant that Cruz never raises his voice, but he scored some heavy body blows.

I see him as a lower average fright candidate because despite him as president being particularly frightening, he's more likely to lose in the general.
Not against Clinton or Sanders, though it will be Hillary. He might as well run unopposed.

I agree. That was the worst run Presidential debate I have ever seen.

He'd still lose, so yes, he might as well.

So I see you picked the "moderate" Republican to support.

The only way Hillary doesn't beat Cruz is if she dies from laughter during one of their debates. To the GOP base, Cruz may have won the debate, but he seemed like a bit of a spoiled brat . . . wasting his 60 seconds throwing a temper tantrum instead of answering the question and then throwing another temper tantrum when the moderators moved on instead of letting him go into overtime.

It was also too bad he did so. MSNBC had the various candidates yapping at each other like overly aggressive small dogs in a park pet enclosure until he spoke out. Then the debate became boring when they all realized what had occurred.

Ted Cruz is a lot smarter than I originally thought he was. It is too bad he has decided to use his power for evil instead of good.

Oh. Right you are. I keep forgetting that CNBC is the supposedly more legitimate and less political form of the same octopus because they dwell on "business news".
