I keep flip flopping a little bit whether I want to try to learn poker seriously and play online. Unfortunately, there are many barriers with legal issues, as well as many sources for advice being...quite sketchy (as in reliability/ability to get payouts or legality of...work arounds.)
Any US person an online poker player? I guess us poker got really hit hard on "black friday" (freezing of a poker site by department of justice in 2011 iirc)

I'll draw a preemptive analogy to responses that I know there is "I agree that I am 18 years old and can use this" user-agreement legality and then a "it's always sunny in philadelphia underground vietnamese gambling ring with russian roulette" legality

I'm pretty sure all the real money poker sites in the aftermath of that decision are in fact shady vietnamese gambling rings with Russian roulette tables to the side. You'll need to go to a casino or something, fairly certain.

Poker online is a much less engaging or rewarding experience than poker in person. You wanna be able to see your opponent when they fold. You want to see the look in their eyes when they turn over their pocket aces, only to be topdecked by your straight. (Or whatever the poker term for topdecking is...)

Poker online isn't that fun, I agree with Mise 100%.
Play poker in real life with friends or whatever. Play for matchsticks, pennies, even strip poker could be more fun than staring into PC till you are dizzy.

I know nothing about the legality of it, but if your objective is to learn poker I think online play can really help. It allows you to play at whatever level you want, from no money to very big money, you can play as much as you want when you want, and you can even play multiple tables at once. It is definitely not as fun as face to face, and it does remove certain elements of the game, but I think it is a good way to learn the game.

My objective would be to be willing to gamble money when I felt confident in learning probabilities better. I'd budget money on orders of ~10^2 and stop if I ever lost a net of ~10^3. Just to write all scientific like 
I know some people that gamble with the basic mentality that their winnings pay off a "free" vacation after doing casual gambling for a year or two. They have good finances, jobs, etc, but some casual play with some effort gets pretty good results. That'd be my aim.

not if you exploit inefficiencies; a zero sum game for a population doesn't have to be a zero sum game for individuals
besides, a lot of casino games are not zero sum games; the house usually has odds in its favor, e.g. blackjack.

Anyways should say it is more of a passing thought now. But I don't have a group of say, 10-12 people willing to occassionally do like a $50 buy in for a big "poker night" or like dedicate a saturday to poker (most dominant is of course texas holdem).
Not quite sure how payouts for friendlies like that are made, but often it'll be like 3rd place gets their money back and then first and second make some. Like for 10 people a 300/150/50 prize pool. Sure it is zero sum since all the money is within the group, but an individual who is slightly better than another individual gains a whole lot more overtime (now online sites would take a commission I assume, etc).
I just think it'd fit well with me, as I do that in other aspects of my life (get "above average" through some level of minor effort) but has a small potential return besides just entertainment (e.g. learning an instrument, getting good at a video game, the running I do, etc).
