I am unable to find any information on this (tooth stripping/shaping) online. Can someone corroborate it?

My quick online search turned up very many reports of increased sensitivity afterwards, from patients and dentists. I'm not sure why you didn't find any. Some people were considering root canals to deal with it. This is a definite risk of the procedure. I wouldn't do it, nor would I recommend it, but it is your body so you decide. I also wouldn't recommend reshaping your nose unless you can't breathe through it.

Once the enamel on a tooth is gone, it is gone gone. Forever. That enamel is the only thing keeping your tooth from rotting from the inside out.

I'm not 'reshaping my nose,' I just used that as an example.

What exactly do you imagine will happen if I scrape a little off the bottom?

Should you go see a dentist if your teeth seem fine but you haven't been to a dentist in years?

Yeah. You can prevent the build-up of plaque to a certain extent but not all of it, and you can't remove it conventionally by yourself. Depending on your genetics, you can pull out all the tricks in self-care and still end up with issues that require intervention. It also helps slow down cavities as they develop faster with more plaque buildup.

Once a year is good for a cleaning. There'll be a bit of pain and sensitivity but nothing terrible. If you go every six months there won't be any pain and you can just zone out for half an hour and then go on with your day. If you haven't gone in years, be prepared for a lot of discomfort and it probably taking closer to an hour. It's not horrible but it's something that'll knock you off balance for the rest of your day.

I regret neglecting my teeth during my health's degradation. I took for granted that I was the "perfect teeth" kid and didn't really gather that this could change, especially if your general health changes. I went five years without going to a dentist and it wasn't an enjoyable experience when I finally went. Teeth hurt a lot less now though.

/sigh
I was afraid you'd say something like that.

Fine. I'll get a check up soon as I haven't been to one in years. I'm not scared of dentists but they are expensive and it's always a bit of a hassle to get it sorted.

How much is a cleaning there?

I think it's around 1000kr (100€/£ -ish)

Gotcha. I have subsidized dental care now for certain things so a cleaning is somewhere around $25. Before I got that, it was $200 which translates to 1,337kr. Looks like the rates aren't too different.

Pretty sure the thing is that dental care isn't considered part of universal healthcare in Norway lol

Yeah I don't understand why dental healthcare is privatised here. Makes zero sense.

Thanks for reminding me.

It's money well spent. The thing is though they're going to want you to come back for regular cleanings. Just going in for one cleaning isn't going to help that much in the long run. It's too bad you don't have coverage. :(

"What a racket! The gardeners want to come back every two weeks. They say, 'The grass will grow back.' Extortion if I've ever heard it."

;)
