TIL: Today I Learned

When the traditional words fail to stand up to scrutiny, it is time to rewrite the story.

Near and far is good for the sides that are described relative to the Earth, but obviously those descriptions have nothing to do with light and dark. At any given time there is a distinction between two sides that does have something to do with light and dark. How to best describe those two distinct sides? Facing the sun and away from the sun are...unwieldy.
For the sides facing us and away from us, I like the front side and the back side, but I can live with the near side and the far side.
For the sides facing the sun and not facing the sun, I like lit side and dark side, but lit side and shaded side would work, too. Lighted and unlit are okay, too, or lit and unlit. I guess I'm not that picky.

I don't think I'm picky. I do like lighted better than lit though. For some reason I think of candles when I think "lit," and lamps and other stuff that is actually making light. Lighted makes me think of interior decorating, like in the "well lighted room" sense. I guess maybe lighted and unlighted sides would be even better now that I think about it. Lighted and shaded are maybe best. Credit to you for "shaded." Excellent flavor, and accurate as well.

Illuminated and not.

The moon is quite dark, reflecting about 1/3 of the sunlight that hits it. Problem is that the sun is too bright and the night's are too dark.

TIL...the albedo of the moon is close to asphalt. It appears so bright I'd have guessed concrete, maybe even sand.

"An innovation using material derived from the shells of crabs and other sea creatures may soon provide a new option for powering medical sensors, phone screens and other devices."

It would be nice if limestone can fill that need, but it might have already gone thru a process making it unusable

it would be cool if the Great Pyramid was restored with a limestone casing

Tesla would love that :)

I wonder how many people in this thread realize that Aimee was originally just repeating a semi-famous quote from the music industry?

:wavey:

I did. Not that it kept me from haring off after the subsequent conversation.

The anthropologist/archaeologist part of me cringes at this idea.

While it would be great to see all the ancient buildings and monuments in their original form, it's going to have to wait until someone invents time travel.

I wonder how many people in this thread think that their taste in music and knowledge of their favorite genre(s) is shared by everyone. I never heard that quote, so for me it is not semi-famous, never mind famous.

I've come to realize that online at least, there are precious few people who are familiar with my favorite musicians, and that anyone younger than 50 has probably never heard of them.

This is reasonable, but we are talking about Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album. You didn't have to like it, but for someone your age, which is approximately my age, to not be familiar with it is almost (not quite, but almost) in "who are these Beatles of which you speak?" territory.

I make references to Jimmy Buffett lyrics all the time, assuming that no one is going to notice since he has two hit records to show for a lifetime of recording, but DSotM is kind of a cultural icon that was practically inescapable at the time.

In 15 minutes it's not going to be 5:00 anywhere meaningful.

Well, she provided later some context to the quote, and given that the statement is clearly false, and we know that she very likely knows it's false, it must have been a quote from somewhere.

That said, did not bother to check where it's from (now I know), but I've never been a fan and don't listen to lyrics.

But yeah, half of what Tim said.

This may be heresy but my least favorite song from The Dark Side of the Moon was arguably the biggest hit - "Money". Just never cared for it, Great Gig in the Sky and Time were my favs

I was very surprised to find out the Great Pyramid was largely intact until recently when Cairo had a big quake and people looted the limestone to rebuild 3-4 centuries ago

Now I'll just have to rely on Hollywood to recreate the image of a shining pyramid under a full moon
