TIL that China has nearly the same land area as the US. I knew they were one of the larger nations, land wise, but didn't realize the numbers were that close. China is 3,705,407 sq mi. The US 3,794,101 sq mi.

I'm trying to learn all sorts of things about the origins of food. You know, where crops, vegetables etc. originated. I'm still confused about the whole business with the domestication of chicken (some consensus would be nice, thank you very much).
But i leaned a few days ago that Kiwis are originally from China. I didn't know that. I felt very stupid.

TIL: Something like 2,000,000 African slaves died hauling elephant tusks on their backs across hundreds of miles in the 19th-early 20th century ivory trade. Then they were often sold to clove growers in Zanzibar. I won't ever look at a piano or billiard balls the same way again, even though they aren't made of ivory anymore.

Today I learned - or, rather, my father told me about how - the Exodus theme song was used throughout South Vietnamese news stations (and propaganda) during the Vietnam War. Although even he doesn't understand why it was chosen, just that it was chosen, and that it can bring up a lot of emotions for Vietnamese overseas refugees due to this.

TIL Greek Americans have been attacked by racist jerks because they "looked like" terrorists (i.e. have dark(er) skin).
We tend to not to hear much about anyone but Germany, Japan, and to a much lesser extent the USSR when it comes to WWII atrocities. Even the allies other than the USSR have more than a few skeletons in the closet, I've learned over the years.
