TIL: Energy drinks are considered a public health risk in the Netherlands and as such, advertising for them is banned much like advertising for cigarettes is banned in the US.

will anyone even recognise this reference let's find out.

Posted from my phone!

I've seen advertisement for Red Bull like 2 years ago, and my Dutch colleague just said that she also thinks that it's not true

I wouldn't doubt your colleague if she says it's not true. I heard it in a video about weird reasons various video games have been banned so it's not like I heard it from a super reliable source. According to that video, one of the UFC games was banned in the Netherlands because it had advertisements for energy drinks in it.

mmhh... I checked a bit further, just to make sure, and I'm also curious now.
It seems they were discussing banning energy drinks for kids https://nltimes.nl/2018/01/15/ban-red-bull-sales-kids-dutch-pediatricians , but has not happened (e.g. ALDI is continuing https://www.ad.nl/economie/aldi-nederland-gaat-gewoon-door-met-de-verkoop-van-energiedrank~ae1bbcdc/ , article in Dutch). The Dutch wikipedia article doesn't say anything about a ban either.
Can't find anything regarding the game :dunno:.

Some people are campaigning for a ban in the UK. The posher supermarkets have introduced their own age restrictions. But the naughty boys dont get their energy drinks from Waitrose while they are picking up "Waitrose Essential" artichoke hearts, so it's rather academic.

I can confirm that.
After some digging in (also curious)
The abuse of energy drinks peaked in 2011, and because of incidents (drinking excessively red bull with wodka) the general awareness of the risks grew under the juveniles and their parents, schools stopped selling it, resulting in decreasing popularity and less incidents.
There was in Januari 2018 still a statement of the De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Kindergeneeskunde (association of child doctors) that they wanted a ban to sell to children below 18 years old.
The position the ministry of health is taking is that such a rule is in conflict with the general responsibility that children and parents have regarding making healthy choices. "Where does such a ban end ?" Should we also ban sugar ? or coffee ?
And more important: would banning it not make it especially attractive as a forbidden fruit ?
So... I do not think anything will be regulated.

The forbidden fruit argument was mentioned in the latter article by a quote of Mark Twain:
TIL :)
"Adam was but human--this explains it all. He did not want the apple for the apple's sake, he wanted it only because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent.
- Pudd'nhead Wilson"

BTW
looking at quotes of Mark Twain, I really like this one:
"After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her.
- Adam's Diary"

I just read this on reddit so I don't know if it's true-

National Geographic was bought out by Rupert Murdoch a few years ago. Since then, they have shifted their stories on climate change avoidance to climate change acceptance + adaptation. They have also shifted heavily away from long term stories (that might take years to a decade to put together) to more short term work. I used to love that magazine and it sucks if this is true.

This might not be so bad though, since avoidance is probably not the path humanity will choose anyway. In that case, we are going to start preparing our societies now so as to soften the blow later and ensure human civilization doesn't completely break down under the strain of climate change.

This is all in the past tense. We chose to ignore the problem. Avoiding it is now essentially impossible.

TIL it's not a mass shooting if you kill your relatives in their homes. Thanks for the clarification, Crime Prevention Research Center.

Well, there are multiple definitions of what constitutes a mass shooting. Clearly the Crime Prevention Research Center operates on the definition that has the "must occur in a public place" qualifier.

Or the "must involve randomly selected targets" qualifier...which might be a useful distinction, actually.
