TM 01 - The alphabet games - America

Some comments on our current status....

Why are we building improvements? I thought we were prepping for war?

NY has a barracks, why a lib? Units....
Philly a granary? I can possibly understand that... Growing is allways nice... but we are preparing for war... Units we need units...

We have a nice collection ready allready but I would like to see some more cats... and some Horse archers near canturbury when we start the war... Would be nice too.

While on the subject of preparing for war... Why aim for drama? We have Civil service but need machinery to enable Maceman. I would switch to Machinery ASAP or now even. While building us some Axes or something as many as we can. (finish the last turn on the lib tho).
Then turn science down and make some money to upgrade to macemen.

Commitment ... that is what we need... If we are going to upstage Vicky, lets do so and not dwindle about ...

Looks solid enough MailMan....

Personally I would have raised both Chicago and Canterbury, or atleast canterbury... Its location is just totaly wastefull to us...

Chicago I would have raised to save the Artist for a tech. A settler is much less expensive than an artist.... IMO

Washington finishes: Longbowman
We are not on the defense yet are we?
MailMan: we just got beaten to the hanging gardens. it should have been completed this turn
Atleast it netted us some money... But why are we at war and building wonders? 1 thing at a time...

So ... Got it... I will try and make Vicky take back canterburry and then burn it  and try and take londen from her...

Hey.
I decided to go for buildings becuase I adopted OR with 25% build time speed.
In Boston I went for military only though. Because of a soon war and because of superb production through chopping. If in a war I think we may build military only if needed.

Tech wise I meant in my last turn we researched Music. We'd have no beakers lost if we'd switched to something else.

I'd have razed Chicago, too.

Anyways it was a good set (and it is a good game btw).
Nice to see different opinions. It is very useful and one can learn a lot.

GL next player.

Oh - I forgot. We didn't get an a great artist in my turns. I would have said that.

Well its all there in the autolog... I switched to theo and build us a military...

I raised York and we can do more (much more) damage. I have researched machinery and killed research so we can upgrade some axes and swords to usefull macemen.
We still need some Cats (I ended up suiciding 3 on York) and most importantly some Settlers to replace the empty spaces.

So I started the first replacement Settler in WDC. because Good old Vicky is going to take my bate of Canterburry

I hope the cat will take it, just so we can raze it with our horse archer who gets a nice bonus vs Cats.... and rebuild with our intended Cottage town.... 2 tiles north and possibly one other a couple of tiles south...

This is our front line, I razed York just 2 tiles east of the settler. Where to rebuild? I marked my spot... 6 hills + marble mine would make a great production city I think... and good food with the Deer.
Down side:
- 1 south of that spot is on a river
- we have to wait till we raze Warwick
- Leaves a gap with our town north (the border expanded twice there allready)

Alternatives:
1) 1 North of its current intension (missing the marble)
2) 1 south (wastefull IMHO)
3) Settle on the grass hill as suggested by the game
4) Other suggestions?

In particular for London we will need some more cats to take down the defenses....

One note I would like to make about promotions... Promote units to their ability .... We have a cat running around with city raider II ??? WTH? Cats get collateral or bombard promotions to make them stronger, unless I am missing some point?

I think pretty soon now we can switch from theo back to OR (possibly toward the end of next turnset?) to start building some serious infra, because we are in serious trouble allready with the upkeep... after we take over/out London, take out Warwick (and rebuild? just east of it) and build atleast 2 towns on the eastern edge of the map...
We will have like 4 or 5 more cities to maintian... Hopefully tho we have then got 3 or 4 'cottage' towns making us money, but before we get them up and running we are in upkeep trouble....
Currently we are at 0% science like I said for upgrade and making only 68 GPT
IIRC at 100% science we are at -30gpt, tho I did build the Holy thing for our religion (not confusianism, the other one... I forget), so that might help a bit...

Lastly our current position on score....

And totaly finaly... On my last turn I noticed a few of our core towns were either having angry or sick people (or even both) so I whipped a Granary and some temples.

The save here

Oh and I took 12 turns to even us out... And I probably couldnt have razed York otherwise...

I would suggest taking atleast warwick, Londen and 1 more town due east of londen before signing peace....

Ya, I thought we were razing Canterbury to settle in the preferred spot. Not that big of a deal though. Weird that Vicky converted back to Confucianism.

My main objection to using the GA on a Culture Bomb is that Sal will probably found Islam now, and that really hurts our overall strategy. We can expect war with Monty shortly and Sal may well join in when he converts to Islam.

Got my PC going again, I will try to play tonight. Will have a look at the save and post any questions before I play tonight.

Well I got my PC fixed but now I can't install the game.

UPDATE: I've resolved the problems, I will play my turns as soon as I can get the save. Namliam, I can't seem to load your save. The html on the link looks kind of whacky. Can you post it again?

Sorry, I forgot to install autolog when I re-installed the game. Here are the highlights:

1) Weird, weird, weird: I did not get the option to raze Canterbury after Vicky took it and we took it back. I even waited until it came out of revolt. It is sitting now unguarded but Vicky doesn't seem to want it back. I moved a worker over to start developing it, not a bad city site overall.

2) Monty attacked about 3 turns into the set. Easily dispatched his first stack, but he has a nasty stack closing in on our iron near Philly. Should be manageable but we might lose iron for a couple turns.

3) Settled in the AI suggested spot to get Pigs, Marble and Sugar. Fought back Monty there too.

4) Used a Great Prophet to discover most of Divine Right. Islam was founded in New York (it's a double-holy city now). Unfortunately, Saladin founded Taoism and converted.

5) National Epic built in Washington, should have another GP pop in about 12 turns

6) Took London on the final turn of the set with suicide cats and a couple more casualties.

7) There is an extra settler snoozed in Atlanta, DC is building Notre Dame, but no hammers into it at the moment.

Here's the save:

Should we make peace with Vicky to concentrate on Monty? Or can we handle a two side war?

We should build the Minaret ASAP in NY if that is an option at all. Not that big a producer is it?
Then have NY concentrate on generating Cash, while spreading Islam and spamming Islam buildings all over...
If we can build the Minaret and make the two shrines we will be in 100% research and +gpt in no time...

 Pain in the .... Monty...

I do not understand what was the problem with Canterbury. Its location is no better and no worse from our original city location. I think it was a waste of time to allow england to retake it (even if we managed to get it razed).

According to the logs its time to make peace with england and fight monti. england will be really easy to take down the road since we crippled her.

I think we should fight general defensive war with monti, maybe take a city or two, but mainly focus on infrastructure and maybe a wonder or two.

We may want to get rifleman as soon as possible to take on Saladin with some tech edge.

I agree about Canterbury, let's just develop it. It is nearly the equal of the other site.

It looks as though we are set up well for an early domination win. I would recommend Heroic Epic in Philadelphia, as it will be closer to the action. We can make peace with Vicky and finish up Guilds. Once we have knights, we can rampage Sal or Monty or Vicky or all three.

We probably need to chop courthouses in all of our conquered cities pronto.

namliaM said:
We should build the Minaret ASAP in NY
The Minaret causes the gold to be accumulated in each city according to its religious building (unlike the shrines that produce the gold in the city where the shrine is built).
Therefore we should consider building the Minaret in the most productive city (IIRC it was Washington in my turn set).

The Minaret causes the gold to be accumulated in each city according to its religious building (unlike the shrines that produce the gold in the city where the shrine is built).

I did not know this. That is very good to know. If that is the case, Washington is the definite first choice, or perhaps Seattle where the culture boost could be helpful and hammers are plentiful.

If we want more cities sites, we will take them from our neighbors.
Since the great plain map is almost all land, I do not think that it is important to use every last square out of it.
If the city site was otherwise having some resources I would argue the other way, but for a city without resources I do not see the point.
