TOS Version 3 test PBEM

One of the big disappointments I had in developing this scenario
was when I discovered the ASW aircraft could not "see" subs
in the areas it flies recon missions in, the game engine won't allow that.
But, it will allow the carrier or airbase it is based on to "see" subs. I would
have prefered it the other way around, but that's the way Civ is.

Yeah...I found that out too. You may want to create 'Escort Carriers' (capacity of 1 or 2) to simulate what the Americans actually used.

Sorry. I sent my turn earlier today to Dazz_G, but didn't post a report.

Donggala and Banjoewangi have fallen to Japanese Marine assaults backed by ship, air and artillery bombardment. All defenders are down to 1 HP before I attack with anything. I usually have sufficient MPs to move attacking marine into the port on the same turn the city falls, thereby reducing the likelihood of a sneak submarine attack. Two workers captured near Banjoewangi.

Bombarded a Commonwealth torpedo bomber in Rabaul, but not enough to kill it. Japanese infantry landed north of Tenate. Dutch infantry outside Menado damaged by bombardment.

You guys are starting to get into VP point trouble if you don't have some kind of offensive soon. I've built up an alarming number of dive / torpedo bombers so whatever attack is going to happen its going to be expensive for you.

BTW, Eric_A if your capitol isn't Wuwei, just where the heck is it? I thought I had you down to one city?

One other question, is city razing allowed in this scenario?

Nice shot LouLong. I was hoping to get away with a quick look.

Sank 2 Dutch PT boats (near Tenate) and a sub (near Koepang).

Destroyed 2 Fighters in Hilo, but lost 3 dive bombers doing it......

The army decided to resupply and rest for a week.

Turn to Dazz_G.

Misfit played his turn before I had a chance to post results for
China and the Netherlands, we may be losing but at least the
game is moving along quickly!

China:
Damaged 2 Jap infantry divisions by bombardment. I fully expected
the final assault on Wuwei to come right away, maybe that huge stack
of artillery all missed!

Dutch: Torpedo bombers sank 1 DD SE of Menado, no loses.

You'll have to wait another turn Eric_A. I want to use my conscript infantry to attack. I want the unit promotions. I suspect I'll need as much good infantry as I can get before its all over. This is the best opportunity I'll have left for some time to get those units promoted.

I have a light carrier with a capacity of 2. I did no want to use escort
carriers because I want the scenaio to have more of a "big picture" feel
rather than try to reproduce every ship of every type.

I have been thinking of making some changes in TOS V4.00.

Artillery:
What I have in mind is two types of artillery, field guns and heavy guns.
Field guns would have a range of 1, be slightly cheaper than the current
artillery and have lower bombard strength. They would also have a small
defence strength so they could not be captured. They would be able to move
in all terrain without roads. Most of the artillery at start would be field
guns.

Heavy guns would have a range of 2, lethal sea bombard, be more powerful
and cost more than the current artillery. Heavy guns can be captured, so if
you think there is a chance of them falling into enemy hands you can always
disband them. Heavy guns could ONLY be moved by roads/rails or by ships.
At the start of the game each of the major powers would have 2 or 3 heavy
guns at some key locations (such as Singapore and Corrigador) but the
Chinese and the Dutch would have none.

Kamaikazes:
Also, I am doing some research on Kamaikazes and should have some changes
for those units soon. I had no idea they had stealth attack!

Subs Vs Subs:
I have been playing Rocoteh's WW2 Global scenario and in this one subs
cannot see subs. I think this is more accurate for the early period of the
war when subs had no radar and fairly primitive listening gear. And due to
the vast distances involved in the Pacific most sub Vs sub encounters were
purely by chance. So for the MP1 games I would remove the "see invisible"
flags for the 3 basic sub types, I-boat, US Submarine and the submarine. In
the MP2 games subs would be completely invisible at start.

I think that retaining cultural boundaries is not a good idea, when a city
falls to an enemy power, it should disrupt food production and road/rail
travel in the area. Retaining cultural boundaries would make it even easier
for Japan to take China snd Southeast Asia.

I would be interested to hear your opinions on these issues.

The Japanese navy cowers in fear of the crack Chinese PT boat fleet.

Wuwei fell. Japanese armies attacked the Chinese infantry stack next to the city. One Japanese army was down to 1hp before retreating. That put the fear of god into me, so I'll wait one more turn to pound them down into nothingness.

Some air bombardment of Australia, but other than that its quiet.

Its nice to see the US navy is finally doing something outside of its bases in Los Angeles and San Diego. Its a long sail to Hawaii.....

The ragged survivors of the last Chinese army, amazed that they repulsed
the Japanese attack, spiked their guns and retreated to the the very edge
of the map. It will now take Japan two more turns to eliminate them.
They wonder why the timid Japanese commander did not send all those
conscript infantry against their hilltop fortress? They would have gladly "trained" them on how to die.

Dutch torpedo bombers damaged a destroyer SE of Dongalla. We then
sent in a PT boat to finish it off, it failed utterly but the explosion was
quite spectacular and the natives will be talking about it for years.

Screen shot:
Massive build up for the assault on Menado. The naval forces 2 tiles
west of the city has 4 BBs and 2 CAs.

Even after the (almost) worst possible result in bombardment attacks, I still managed to take out the defenders of Menado. Tenate also fell, but that attack cost me a marine. 1 dive bomber was shot down by flak. 7 Elite units attacked this turn (along with a pile of other units) and not one ground unit promotion..... (sigh).

Caught a nice fat Dutch transport out in the open.......

I bombed some more Australian coastline. (BTW LouLong what happened with one of my other CAs at Truk? I see damage there).

China is proving to be annoying. Bombarded his units down. They'll be dead next turn.....

The US decided to sent out some ships after all. My DD screen in the Pacific caught two of them. Air units finished them off.

China's last stand is over. Eric_A will be pleased to note that 2 conscript Japanese units died defeating the remnants of the once mighty Chinese army. My remaining units got promoted however, so it wasn't a total loss.

Manokwari and Boela have fallen. I did not expect to find a defensive unit in Boela having scouted it last turn. I must admit that I didn't expect to find a bunch of Australian seamen just south of it either. They were cleverly positioned to avoid a dive bomber strike from Dongala, however my dive bombers were not based there (nor were my regular bombers). I lost 1 bomber to AA fire, but sank the CA and all of the DDs. The Commonwealth should consider themselves very lucky that their transports are still floating (both have only 1 hp each).

Two Commonwealth DDs were sitting out in the ocean NW of Carnavon, so I bombed one of them for good measure too.

There has to be some subs out there somewhere, but I haven't found them (yet).

Still nothing from the U.S. At some point they may want to consider getting back into the war. If they think that the Japanese forces are going anywhere near continental America, they are dreaming..... You'll have to come to me.
