Two French warships were sent to the port of Larnaca as a French company was one of those due to begin drilling for oil and gas off the coast of Cyprus after Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned them not to do it.

Erdogan’s threat came after the collapse of unity talks aimed at reunifying the island that’s been divided since an unlawful Turkish invasion in 1974 and with the northern third still occupied by Turkey, which also keeps a standing 35,000-strong army there.

The refusal to remove the troops led to the negotiations between Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci coming unraveled amid the backdrops of Erdogan earlier saying he would send an energy research vessel into the waters where the legitimate Cypriot government has licensed international firms, including a US company, to explore for energy.

So, Turkey claimed that the underwater gas/oil fields south of Cyprus should be its own too, because everything should. You can see those fields in the map:



Sadly it got ignored by the other powers, and now France (which has a company doing the drilling) sends two of its own warships there. Why is everyone ganging up on poor Turkey?

Anyway, re France: too late, it was France which gifted Turkey with eastern Thrace, including Constantinople in 1922, and (of course) they are only here to protect their own interests.

“It is impossible to appreciate that some energy companies are acting with, and becoming part of some irresponsible measures taken by Greek Cypriots. I want to remind them that they could lose a friend like Turkey,” Erdogan said, according to the Reuters news agency, without, however, naming the companies. France’s Total won a license from Cyprus to drill offshore this year.

France is giving Nicosia full support in drilling for natural gas and oil in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and French President Emmanuel Macron has assured Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of that, a Real.gr report said.

The exploration for oil and natural gas in Cyprus’ EEZ is conducted by the French-Italian joint venture of Total and ENI energy companies.

The drilling in “Block 11” of the island’s EEZ started as planned on Wednesday, despite Ankara’s warning that drilling in the area is a “unilateral action” against the economic interests of the Turkish-Cypriot community of the occupied northern part of the island.

The operation was briefly monitored by the Turkish Gokceada frigate, as the Turkish Navy was conducting an exercise in the area. However, at the same time two French warships arrived at the port of Larnaca, a move that, analysts say, is a warning to Turkey that France is determined to protect its interests.

According to a Real.gr report, the issue had been discussed on the sidelines of the recent EU Summit by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In fact, Real.gr says, Macron forwarded a handwritten note to Tsipras which said “There will be no suspension” [of drilling in Cyprus’ EEZ].

What has Thrace, including Constantinople, got to do with the waters south of Cyprus.

Turkey's claim is obviously a bit strange unless it is going to invade and annex the whole of Cyprus.
