I'm sure I've heard "democracy is on the line" about 1000 times this election season.

The assassination attempt not too shocking now that Trump is ahead in polling and Biden won't step aside.

Given the line against Trump was up to now the anti-democracy one, and it has to be toned down following today, one wonders if any other line can catch up.

Not even worth bothering to hold an election - that is your next president unless someone actyaly does manage to assassinate him. In which case the countty will be pretty screwed.

Not that things changed much, just the margin of victory. This failed assassination does have a different political impact though: Trump is now much freer to choose a VP that works as insurance policy. No Pence type this time. Someone who personally hates the "DC system". I wonder if he'll pick that general who got put through the courts for backing him. Would make some heads in the bureaucracy explode, in figurative terms.

This is just a fact of human nature but there will be a whole generation of impressionable kids that we take all this in, and Trump will be an icon for them. I remember how hated JFK was hereabouts before his assassination and after he was a saint to many. And this in the heart and soul of the segregated South.
