Unit Requests: Steampunk

She's almost ready to go. I need to tweak a few things, but she's getting close to animation. If there is anything else you would like to see on her, let me know. I added a small little cloth on her right side for civ color.

I will render weaponless Dejah and then this Dejah with Sword, Knife and Pistol.

Since I will be making the animations myself, I will have 1 FLC for sword attack, knife attack, gun attack.

For weaponless Dejah, I suppose a punch and perhaps jump-kick (roundhouse? :mischief:) animation may do the trick.

To help myself with the run animations, I will try to 'transpose' the coordinates and keyframes from a similar Atlantica Online unit to get it looking good. I tried making a run myself the other night, but it is quite tough. I can't use AO animations because the unit structure is a bit too different, and would require major work to get it to work. Too bad I don't have Motion Capture equipment, then I could record the animations myself! :)

But for the rest of the animations, I should do alright.

Updated, Barefoot, with Curved Blade

I was thinking, while I am at it... I might as well make a few more animations of her with a spear, and perhaps some other weapons; she could act as an Amazon Queen (wearing gold high-heels) or something; perhaps some magic attacks as well.

by the way, don't you have a "Walk Designer" with your program?

The Units that I cannot use a Walk Designer to make the animation for, I use a Primitive Ball that I set invisible and parent the Hip for the Unit to it. I then parent that Ball to the "Rotation Ball", which is just another Ball centered and on the Ground and set as Invisible, used to Rotate the Unit.

As the Unit Runs or Walks, you can drag the unit back so it Runs or Walks in Place. You can use the edge of a Cylinder you can placed to help you see exactly how much to drag the unit back each step. Still requires work but it makes it easier :)

Re Dejah: I'm a little thrown off by her sword. I've tried to find the passage in the books where Burroughs describes the martian longsword, and I will find it eventually, but, in the meantime, I can provide a few references:

>Here< is a Martian Longsword made by FilmSwords.com based on Frank Frazetta's Barsoom Art. As you can see, it has an Italian-style handle with a curved blade.

>here< is an interview with the Swordmaster of the upcoming John Carter movie, in which he talks about the swords used in the production, and a few tips on how Dejah Thoris might wield hers.

>here< is a link to a free sword at Turbosquid that at least has the right handle design. I looked all night and couldn't find a curved sword blade that matches the Frazetta design.

Note: you are free to tell me that it's your unit and you'll make it the way you want it to look. I'd accept that. On the other hand, that was a lot of research for one post, so I'd appreciate if you'd look at the links. Thank you. :D

P.S. Weaponless Dejah doesn't need any attack animation for the purposes of our mod, as she will have 0/0/0 stats - she is a prisoner. On the other hand, once rescued, she will need a sword, so perhaps we don't need a weaponless Dejah after all. I'm conflicted about this.

 Why not just give her Cha-Cha Pumps? :joke:

see...he's actually not joking, he really want them pumps

A weaponless "Dejah" will be useful in later scenarios as a Princess unit.

... Well ...
Any self-respecting Amazon queen wouldn't be caught dead in pumps. Tiger-skin thigh-high boots, however... :mischief:

I don't know if I have a Walk Designer or not? :dunno: I can check though... but that is an interesting workable notion you have mentioned, and I will put it to the test!

I forgot to curve this blade like I did with the other Dejah, but that sword is terrific, I should've checked TurboS myself! Thanks for the info and the link, I have d/l the above and will use this; I can curve the sword end to mimic the other pics. I was thinking about how Dejah wields her sword, thanks for the info.

Ok, well I can throw in some weaponless attacks anyway, at least she'll be more useful that way in the broad sense, and then you can decide what you wish to do. :)

Oh dear! So this is Dejah's new upcoming requested apparel? What has Dejah gotten herself into!

It was tempting to put Amazon Women on the Moon - as Alan Moore does in "Century" - when we were designing this, but frankly, at that point, I'd put so many of the existing Amazon units into Pellucidar - Burrough's "Amoz" civilization is obviously a shortening of "amazon" - that I was afraid that we wouldn't have enough to fully stock a lunar civ. Instead, we went with a strategy that filled the moon with robots. Somewhere, I came up instead with a civ called the Uga, and I've never since been able to figure out where I got the name from.

(3rd) Edit: IMHO, Dejah is barefoot, or shod as you've previewed. Anything else is for another character/unit entirely.

U-ga with a dash. It's ERB again:
"The dominant human race of Va-nah, the lunar inner world. They are mountain dwellers who measure time by the periods of light or dark coming through the Hoos (lunar craters)". Try U-ga or Moon Maid for search terms.

p.s. tom2050 I love your Dejah.

Ah, yes. That is why you are the master, and I the student, Sensei.

P.S. on a side note, all the recent activity has got me interested in checking out the world of Steampunk, and I have started reading A Princess of Mars, and what a blast! This is my kind of book! I'm shocked at myself for not getting it earlier!

Tom... Check out the Swords at http://www.whatever3d.com/search.ez?q=sword
...I like the Argawal's Fantasy Sword but that might not be what is desired.

That is definitely a great source there! Plenty of swords that are workable! I will have no prob with coming up with something that fits Dejah now.

EDIT: I have updated the sword in pic above at post 223; I can curve the sword more, but it looks like it is good enough, and the curve can be seen when the unit is at civ scale. Also removed High Heels.

Here's another I have been working on off-and-on for a bit. Should have it up tonight.

Countess Carmilla / Black Leopard
CountessCarmilla.gif
CountessCarmilla-LG.jpg

The only possible problem with the morph is in the case of lethal bombardment if the unit is not fortified (in which case the non-fortified Countess immediately goes to the leopard death without using the Fortify FLC which provides the Morph). Don't believe there is a way around this problem either.:dunno:

EDIT: Has been posted!

And from your post here, I used the Vulcanus guy to come up with a possible John Carter. I removed his 'cast' and retextured his leg. I began to remove the cloth he is wearing, to add just a chest strap (as he seems to wear in pics), but it is a real pain to rebuild his body underneath, the game left a big polygonal hole under that cloth.

I was able to re-build it, but then it gives errors; which I don't know quite how to fix or get around at the moment. I thought about trying to 'plaster' the cloth to the body (because it hangs out a bit) and then just texture that with his skin texture, but it might be alot of work getting the texture to match perfectly.

Alternatively, I could just probably mirror the right side of him, and flip it over to the left side... which would work and is easy, but then the object might not be able to 'move' properly with the bone structure. Blah!

If you think this works as is, I can render it out quickly. He has Sword and Gun for weapons; and I found some nice animations from AO that include some athletic attacks (a leaping jump, etc), since he seems to be an athletic kind of guy from the stories, and from what you all have mentioned.

JohnCarter.jpg

I can also get the White Ape going. From the AO 4 armed monkey, I can displace the maps to make it larger than the skinny monkey they have. AO has a Giant Ant, but I think it's a bit fantasy style, as it kind of 'walks'; and throws a giant boulder around (plus the attack KF animations don't work for some reason, but the boulder can be deleted and attacks animated myself).
AntSoldier.jpg

Dejah might take a bit to complete, since to get animations done right takes a while when doing them from scratch.

If his sash were sufficiently wide enough, you keep the belt, and leave a codpiece, the area that you'd have to recolor of the tunic would be only the area beneath one arm and a little of his stomach and a bit at the top of the legs. Add a Sword sheath on a strap that comes across from the opposite shoulder to his left hip and a holster on the other hip, and I'd bet you'd never see the tunic changes at civ scale.
