United States and Circumcision

Ehh. My dad had to prevent doctors from circumcising me when I was born. He almost had to resort to violence.

There are some really serious problems with this country. This is but one of them.

AFAIC, I couldn't care less about this issue. And if a girl is stupid enough to dump you because you are/are not circumcised, she's not worth it.

Seconded. I wonder how she'd feel if she got dumped because her breasts are too small? ;)

A quick look on google shows that there are even law firms which specialize in wrongful circumcision cases.
There are specialists for anything. Here in Norway, we have two weird parties called The Pensioners' Party and The Political Party. I kid you not.

Wait, are you trying to deny that America has more circumcisions per capita than any other country?

There are women here who have *never* seen an uncircumcised man. They even made jokes about the issue on Seinfeld (among other shows).

Thanks for the link.

Amazing what you can learn in these forums.

No, I'm not denying that. I'm saying you shouldn't think there are particularly many of these cases just because someone specializes in them.

Ah, I see, I see. There may not be *too* many cases, but circumcisions in this country are *way* too common. Aside from doing it for religious purposes (most babies are circumcised because it's just how things are done, which is sad), it's a backwards practice.

Hate to be so blunt but who cares? I had my kid circed because "its just how things are done". So what?

Ehh. I'll go with this good old statement.

If every other parent made their kids jump off a cliff, would you make yours just to maintain the status quo?

It makes about as much sense, really.

Not alot of sense in your analogy either. Circumcision is neither fatal nor harmful. To me it appears to have a negligable effect on health in either direction.

If you wanna dare to be different, feel free to show how you flout society's conventions and rock the status quo. I have an old Misfits patch for your leather jacket.

1: It's not harmful, but it does take a lot of "feeling" away. The kid should at least be able to have a choice to do it *later on in life*.

2: The Misfits used to be good, but Husker Du have always been better. And I wear denim jackets, not leather jackets. ;)

I am one of those very few (now you can all die happy knowing that I'm intact), but the most common reason I hear is hygiene. Though I have no freakin idea what the hell that has to do with this form of "whacking" it off.

Due to a research project I have done on AIDS and HIV, I read that the part that is removed during circumcision is more susceptible to the HIV virus than the rest. And having it removed slightly lowers your chances of catching the virus. But even if your partner doesn't have this virus (or the latter disease), you should still use a condom unless you want to lose half your paycheck for the next 18 years.

I don't know why it should be a religious practice either, I don't think saying "cut your johnson off and you'll get to heaven" is a very good selling point for anything, much less a religion (yes I know it isn't all removed).

You, as the parent of your child, have the right to decide it for him.
But that doesn't change the fact that Circumcision is only performed for religious or tradition reasons. If someone wants it for health reasons (s)he is basing it on false assumptions.

Mr Joyce: When your son was born, did you consider to not have him circumcised? If "Yes", what was the reason -besides tradition- you chose to have it done ?
Would you have it done if you'd live in a country where nearly every male was not circumcised?

Liquid hot smegma! Which I hear can make your pee pee unhealthy with blantitis or something like that.

Is there anyone here, who was circumcised later in his life? I fear it is the only way to reach a definite conclusion on the "feel better" claim. ;)

WTH? I've never had that before in my life. You have to have *horrible* hygiene to get something like that, man.

Indeed. Does it really change anyone's life over in Europe to know that thousands of miles away in America, the Dark Art of circumcision is practiced?

Hey Rik, Mr. Joyce is my dad man.

When he was born the doctor came and asked us what we wanted to do. I couldnt really have cared less either way. The deciding factor was probably that I'm circed so might as well have the kid done also. Im in the midst of potty training and they find the craziest things to fixate on. I didnt feel like going through the explanation of why daddy's looks one way and you look different.

All that said, if it cost me instead of costing the insurance company, I probably would have passed. I would have saved the $400 and bit the bullet on the little talk with the kid.

If we emigrated to Europe or someplace where having it done is rare, I probably would have passed on it.
