Please start a new topic on this if you want, but don't muddy up my thread!
By your command:

Prove to me that BEAUTY exists - A golden chance to silence those who would silence Curt Silbing!

Now I want to lay down some rules:

(1) I want something that could be evidence, not just anecdotes and personal imaginings of beauty.

(2) I don't want unproductive answers like: 'You have to see it for yourself'...That is copping out.

(3) I don't want the predictable 'Prove beauty doesn't exist' line. You are the believer, not me!

(4) If you think beauty is something in your personal mindspace...Share the insights with us!

(5) This thread is not about me or any particular artist, just go ahead and give evidence for us all.

I do not submit this as proof of anything. I do not even know whether BEAUTY exists in any objective sense. I know that beauty is not scientific, not provable, and not even consistently agreed upon, but I also know that I have had (and I would guess most people have had) a personal experience of beauty.

Beauty is the human reaction to natural phenomena, such as the reproductive fitness of potential mates, or any of our surroundings. We are psychologically programmed to see things as "beauty" not because they have any inherent quality lacked by "non-beautiful" things but because of our way of interpretation.

Beauty is a human construct used to explain our assessment of someones genes. :) What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic...

Beauty is subjective

Veribass, Are you trying to show that the idea of God is subjective as well?

that's not entirely true there are some things that everyone finds beautiful, Beauty is both, a woodland glade, pleases everyone aesthetically but not everyone for the same reasons. Likewise there are some works of art that everyone likes, like the Cistine Chapel, because they are breathtaking.

It exists only in my mind, just like God, if I recognise it and will it so, it is there.

My work here is done. If you need more proof, check the babe thread.

Fibonacci = 'Golden Ratio'

No Im not that smart, Im googling up a storm here;)

I just gave you the first Fibonacci numbers. ;)

Prove that beauty exists.

Sorry, I can't prove to you what my perception of beauty is, nor that it exists outside my mind.

The so-called "Golden Mean", represented by the Greek letter Phi (φ) and approximately equal to 1.618, has also been considered by many to be beautiful. It is also called the divine ratio and it is frequently found in nature. For example, in a nautilus shell, the ratio between each section is about 1.618. In Ancient Greece and Rome beauty was measured and based on similar principles. See Golden Ratio.

The question is, do we see phi as beautiful because its found so often in the human body, or is the human body beautiful because of its association with phi?

can blind people perceive beauty?

I think so.

Does anyone disagree?

I do not disagree, but I'm curious - tell me how and why do you think so.

@BE: :yup: I know my friend.

@Souron: Feels like I've been here before...

Supposedly its a pattern found often in nature, not just the human body.

Its found in a lot of places. The one I always found bizarre was bee reproduction :crazyeye:. I just wonder why is the ratio that is so prevelent in nature phi:1?
