Video: Troll or Mistake?

Was the leader information in the video a troll?

If that's the case, C5 may be Korea. :D

Well looking at this list of countries by video game revenue (https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-100-countries-by-game-revenues/), you would think that Korea was one of the most important markets for the game. But seeing as this is a western game, sales in Korea for this game will be significantly lower than those for major local games in many cases. So countries like Poland and Germany are probably more important markets.

I'm a bit surprised that Firaxis has not made any comment at all on the leaders thread. They really ought to. All the hard work that has gone into it deserve a comment at least. I'm disappointed in them.
I dont expect any confirmation. But it would be neat to see some (vague) comment on the leaders thread. If they would say: "the civfanatics/reddit civ fans are very eager to unreveal the leaders and there are guessed leaders/civs which are included in the game".
It doesnt mean much, but would be neat.
Also Eagle Pursuit contacted mostly Pete Murray on twitter I believe. Who mostly did respond if the answers to the questions were not that much revealing.

I think they may acknowledge this but only sometime after the release of the game, but not before, for the reasons stealth_nsk mentioned.

It's hard to compare because I don't remember anything like this ever happening before. But I'm not really surprised they haven't said anything. They might comment on it once the game is released or once all the leaders have been revealed. But with a leak/intentional puzzle that we just solved far too quickly like this, they're not going to say anything that could risk being interpreted as a confirmation of the entire Civ list until most of them have already been confirmed anyway.

I can remember all the insane speculation over Venice when it was the last Civ to be revealed in BNW. People sampling the colour of the mysterious purple Civ and comparing it to the Venetian flag :crazyeye: IIRC, there was no developer comment about that (or have I forgotten something?)

And yet, after all the pondering on whether it's intentional or not, what did it tell us? Absolutely nothing. The shot is too far away to determine anything other than a matrix of people, both male and female, in various types of historical costumes. :woohoo:

Um... no. We found perfect matches for 15 out of 18 previously unknown leaders represented -- and 2 of them are already confirmed to be in the game (Barbarossa and Trajan).

They should at least say that they are reading it with interest. :mischief:

You don't know Firaxis very well, do you?
Not at all, but I do know good business practices and those would include a nod in the direction of the leaders thread.

Of course with each new leader that is revealed, the truth of the matter will become clearer and clearer. If the image was intentional, then they would have had a planned response (or planned no response), but to plant that much information and then ignore it when it is discovered makes little sense. The longer they ignore the discovery, the more it looks like it was an oops.

that was my thread, but I had not been back to see if anyone had responded.

I sometimes wonder if this was a setup to have us namedrop some civs/leaders we'd like to see (in those pictures), so they can get them for expansions.

We will see if I was right, when we get Tamar of Georgia.

Not sure what the issue is ??? We got information to chew on, if we got it on purpose or not seems not really relevant. This way they have us busy and do not need to produce too many first look xyz Videos...

But he's just a mod, not a developer. I don't think he has any more insider info just because it's the official 2k forum.
True. Moderators on the 2K forums are volunteers and usually just fans of the games. There is no inside information. Just whatever is out there.

What changes would you propose?

I would have removed Poland, Brazil, Greece, and added Persia, Zulu and Inca.

But there is a limit to the changes that can be made when we only have 18 civs. England, France and Spain are too historically important to remove, and Germany too important a market for Civ games (German people are one of the top markets for videogames; https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-100-countries-by-game-revenues/).

No Poland, no Brazil; replace Catherine de Medicis with Louis XIV; replace Gandhi with literally anyone else--Joan of Arc for all I care--just replace him; replace Afonso with Nzinga; replace Peter the Great with Catherine the Great; replace Victoria with Elizabeth (yes, I know we already knew about Victoria); and Inca and Haida can take Poland and Brazil's slots. That said, I'm ecstatic about Barbarossa, Scythia, no Alexander, no Napoleon, a non-Julian emperor of Rome, and if B5 does turn out to be Tamar of Georgia I'll be ecstatic about that too. And I'm quite pleased about Sumer, as well. So overall I'd describe my reaction to the list at present as "mixed"; if I were limited to only one change, however, it would be ditching Brazil and replacing it with Haida.

Well, does the the fact that they included a picture in the China video mean they are recognizing the all leaders thread? I think so. Even if it doesn't match, the fact that they are showing us the picture that they used would seem to say: Now we will show you our final sources for the leader art even if it doesn't match what you found in the video. I don't recall that they gave us such a picture when they introduced Theo or Cleo.

There was a real picture of Teddy in the America First Look. It doesn't seem to be the one from the wall though.

That might imply that the pics on the wall were the starting place for leader art and subject change as the art was developed. We don't know the date of the video footage of that hallway do we?

I think we can assume that the leader list is real and that we have identified who most of them are, but only time will tell us if that particular image was used for the art. As i see it, once they had their list of leaders, they posted their pics for everyone to see and then began to develop the art itself. We don't know how many of the pictures posted were the basis for the final art. the importance of the video oops is that it gave us a pretty good list of who the leaders will be.

Rome, France and Germany will tell us if any of this is true since they have unanticipated picks for leaders.

Time traveling 2k Games publicists confirmed!

The fact that a First Look video that came before the leak (or "leak") also shows a historical image of the leader (and in exactly the same place in the video, after showing the leader screen) weakens the argument that including "a picture in the China video mean they are recognizing the all leaders thread". So, there's no reason to assume that the image they are showing in the video is directly related to the images hung up on the wall.
