Watermarking stuff you didn't make

So we have sites like 9gag or CollegeHumor's funny internet pictures sections that put big ugly stamps on stuff they didn't make. I'm don't know no law nor philosophy, so I can't comment on legality or ethicality, and I'm ignorant on the matter, so all I can say is that I find that obnoxious, almost as obnoxious as me.

What do you think?

Why do you find it obnoxious?

(and why do you find it less obnoxious as you :p)

I HATE 9GAG. They take credit for everything on the internet and make it all pop culture stuff. Every internet thing is first made on 4 chan and than it gets proccesed on reddit and memebase and finally 9gag takes it and makes it pop culture and popular. I think anonymous or some hacker group should destroy 9gag.

Protip: It's ruined by pop culture before it's even left 4 chan.

I used to make some screen captures and scan some magazine pics. I never put any marks on it. Fact is I never really owned any of it, and so was not really entitled to do so. And the same goes for anyone else making caps, clips, and scans.

ebaumsworld started it.

I, too, hate 9GAG for making the claim that they made their content.

True. I dont put watermarks on any of the scans on my site (even if I scanned 'em) 'cos that would be unfair to the real owner.

I guess Fight Club was right: Everything's a copy of a copy of a copy.

I do my part by boycotting their website, and any website that puts up obnoxious watermarks

It's not really about claiming ownership. It's about advertising.

Guy using internet sees a really funny picture hotlinked from someone's imageshack with funnystuff.com plastered across the bottom. Thus they go to funnystuff.com to see more funny pictures. Works with porn too.

Nice one . I now know what a watermark mark is . Unfortunately , on re reading with my new found knowledge I still don't understand what 90% of the posts on this thread are about . I also suspect that I'm gonna survive ignorantly happy on this matter .

So there is a website that collates funny stuff from the web and puts it on it's site....it then adds the watermarks sort of making it look likes it is it's own stuff , but maybe more to the point , as these images then get further thrown around the web , the watermark remains and the site gets advertising for stuff it didn't create ?

Yeah , stuff 'em
