Personally I am more annoyed by writing Thessalonike, that literally has the term nike which in English is spelled correctly alone, with an "i" at the end. As mentioned before, it was the name Philip B' gave his daughter, to commemorate his very important victory in the amphictyonic leage war against Phokis, which let him incorporate Thessaly. Later on Kassander, who married Philip's daughter, founded this city and named it after her.
