A question for all Tolkien nerds:

From where do the dwarves of Moria get their food?

They could of course get some by trading with humans on the surface, but that would leave them vulnerable to blockades.

Spiders, beer, lichens, beer, shrooms, beer, carrion crawlers, beer, Drow:mischief: , beer and what ever the would hunt on the surface?

Tolkein mentions in The Hobbit that dwarves trade for their food.

Soylent Green.

The dwarfs were traders obviously. It's actually described somewhere.

Remember you would have to controll both sides of the mountains to make a real blocade.

If I remember correctly, there used to be an Elven city outside Moria, and they traded with the Dwarves. In fact, the wording on the door with the riddle was also written in Elvish, not the Dwarven language. This was obviously before Dwarven relations with the Elves went downhill. This is all based on what I remember from reading the trilogy's appendixes or maybe the Silmarilion, but I last read those books a while ago so I could be wrong. Still, trade of some sort. Keep in mind Moria was the main source of Mithril, a rare metal valued above even gold.

I think they can digest rock. I'm not sure though

In addition to trade, weren't some of the cities above ground? In a secluded vale or something. I haven't delved too deep into the Tolkein mythos, but I recall reading it somewhere...

OK, Dwarves trade for their food. But what about the Orcs in Mordor? It looks like a pretty barren place, so what do they eat?
