What do you see in your night sky?

Well, from my front porch, a lot more than most other people here, but not a huge amount (I live in a decent sized town). If I drive for ten to twenty minutes, then I can see just about everything. Every constellation you can name, thousands of other stars, the Milky Way...

Not much. Up in Western Mass it was beautiful though. Saw all sorts of pretty stars.

I go to college in Western Massachusetts... It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but the decline in number of visible stars is striking.

I can make out the Dippers pretty easy, Polaris is pretty obvious in the sky. Orion is another obvious one, and I can make out Cassiopeia if I really try. Mostly because those are the ones I've trained myself to see. And the moon of course.

What part? I lived out in the woods (Shutesbury) with very little "light pollution" at night, in Amherst or Noho I imagine it would be significantly harder to see.

What you can see at night changes throughout the year. For instance, Orion isn't visible between April and July as it's in the daytime sky.

Can you see the southern cross?

Right now i can only see a few stars, even though the street lights are out, but there could be some low cloud around, obscuring the view, since normally the sky is quite bright, even with the street lights on, since we are in the suburbs and they are not too bright here.

Not much. The moon of course. Maybe 20-30 stars on a good night, maybe as many as 50 in clean winter. I can see Venus, Mars, and Jupiter when they pop up. I actually saw a few Jupiter moons from my front porch one time, which was incredibly badass because I live in the city.

When I'm living in one town, I can see perhaps a dozen or so stars. Orion is visible in the winter, but a little dim. When I'm in my university town, though, I can see a lot more from the main quad because the lights aren't as obnoxious.

At home on a clear night - 1000s plus an orange glow from Galway 10k to the south.

I will take a picture at the weekend if it is clear.
