What does a MAGA hat stand for?

A shakedown is a shakedown, no matter who does it, and yes, there are plenty of racist non-white people around. Thankfully I haven't run into more than a couple in my life, but to be consistent, you aren't going to automatically discount the lived experiences of those who have

Of course not.

Sorry, but it looks like you have been. I'm not disputing your experiences, but it seems that you're disputing, or at least minimizing, other people's experiences. That isn't something that fosters civil conversation.

Quote it then.

I've had people, multiple times in this thread alone, dispute and minimize my experiences.

I've got to say, this is a weird take on something that originated from Cloud saying "I steer clear of them for my safety" and Patine mocking her for her apparent "paranoia".

Oh, please.

I am not going to be drawn into this any more. Just please understand that as much as you have serious issues with bigotry, so do other people, for other reasons. I'm not saying your perspective doesn't matter, but it's not the only one.

That's all people are trying to explain to you.

I acknowledge what you are saying.

@Valka D'Ur

I'm not for one second going to claim that I haven't had issues with Cloud many, many times (on this particular note as well), but in this case it seems slightly unfair to say to her "you're misinterpreting my posts", when this whole exchange started with you apparently misreading hers. She said (paraphrasing) "I'm not about to dismiss other people's lived experiences", and you replied with "these things do happen, you're not going to dismiss these lived experiences are you?". I'll just assume you misread it.

I doubt it's out of spite, consoling people in pain can take different approaches including 'get over it' or 'you're not alone'. Those words may seem callous or dismissive but they do contain an indispensable wisdom.

Okay, if people insist I misread something, fine, I'm not in the mood to argue about it. But I meant it when I said that other people's lived experiences matter, as well. I was specifically referring to race-based bigotry, but also to the fact that some people here and on another site I belong to insist that the bigotry they endure is the only kind that is worth complaining about and everyone else should just agree with them.

I'm not in a great mood these days because the provincial government has just pulled the financial rug out from under the disabled population AGAIN, won't say why, and the Minister of Social Services isn't talking, replying to questions even from the media, never mind the people this actually is going to affect, and it means that I have to tell my landlord that I'll be walking a tightrope for rent a month from now because I don't know if the disability payments will arrive before or after the automated rent payment is taken. Payments were a few days before the end of the month, giving plenty of time to pay rent, utility bills, etc. Now they're going to be on the same day as the rent is due.

Tens of thousands will be in this situation, We're told, "If you have a problem, call your case manager."

Hello, it's hard to get hold of them now. I haven't bothered calling mine because I know it would be at least a week before getting a callback.

How does this relate to bigotry? Easy. The government we have now is run by one of the people who, in Harper's last term, saw nothing wrong with trying to disenfranchise my demographic and several others, making it harder for us to vote. Now they've canceled the indexing of disability benefits, and starting next month, some people will be in arrears for rent and utilities, all before they get their monthly benefit after these payments are due.

And those are just the people who have direct deposit. The ones who get cheques in the mail will be in worse situations.

Somehow, this is supposed to "Make Alberta Great Again."

As a social worker, I've been in the unenviable position of having to be the one to inform clients about these changes, and because it's me, not Kenney, personally telling them, I've had some anger, frustration, and harsh words directed at me. I definitely agree that certain posters become very self-indulgent on their RL problems or issues - even if they're great and overwhelming, indeed - and often, strangely, show a pitiless side when others talk about suffering unduly, or want to play "suffering Olympics," (the Olympics where everyone loses). I moreso gave @Manfred Belheim a few non-committal statements in hopes he wouldn't harp on that issue forever, and to push the thread forward, not really to agree with his claim about you "misreading," per se.

Oh, it's Kenney I'm furious with, and Rajan Whatsername (the social services minister). She wouldn't even talk to CBC about this. As of last night, there isn't one syllable about it on her FB page. My own case worker has been very good to me.

Someone opined that the reason for this change is really so the government can hold on to the money until the last possible day to release it so they get more interest, to help finance the "war room". There was a time when I'd have said that was paranoid, but this is Jason Kenney we're talking about. He's like Ralph Klein - clueless and proud of it, and completely without any attempt at compassion.

If they had to pick another day, why not the last day of the month? That way the people affected by direct deposit would be assured of the money being there when the rent payments are taken out on the first of the month.
