I'm not in a great mood these days because the provincial government has just pulled the financial rug out from under the disabled population AGAIN, won't say why, and the Minister of Social Services isn't talking, replying to questions even from the media, never mind the people this actually is going to affect, and it means that I have to tell my landlord that I'll be walking a tightrope for rent a month from now because I don't know if the disability payments will arrive before or after the automated rent payment is taken. Payments were a few days before the end of the month, giving plenty of time to pay rent, utility bills, etc. Now they're going to be on the same day as the rent is due.
Tens of thousands will be in this situation, We're told, "If you have a problem, call your case manager."
Hello, it's hard to get hold of them now. I haven't bothered calling mine because I know it would be at least a week before getting a callback.
How does this relate to bigotry? Easy. The government we have now is run by one of the people who, in Harper's last term, saw nothing wrong with trying to disenfranchise my demographic and several others, making it harder for us to vote. Now they've canceled the indexing of disability benefits, and starting next month, some people will be in arrears for rent and utilities, all before they get their monthly benefit after these payments are due.
And those are just the people who have direct deposit. The ones who get cheques in the mail will be in worse situations.
Somehow, this is supposed to "Make Alberta Great Again."
