What in the World? Why so many insane regulations?

This does not make them more valuable than Human people...
I still do not understand where you are getting this notion. Was the guy going to be killed by the whale? No. He only had to wait a few more hours to avoid hurting the whale.

And yes, I am aware of this kind of debate tactic. I find it rather classless.

Nothing really shocking. I think most of the obviously "wrong" ones seem to be the result of lobby groups influencing lawmakers, or they're just being mispresented like the first one.

Spoiler :

Private Investigator's License
and
Business Privilege License... For Bloggers
look like they have been passed by old people who have their secretaries print ut their emails for them, but Elrohir and Perfection already showed number one really isn't what the slideshow claims.

Funeral Director License for Monks
Looks like the funeral home lobby is behind this and it says more about special interest than "insane government regulation"

Teeth Brushing Regulation
Makes sense to me.

D.C. Tour Guide License
Probably special interest again. Tour guide lobby ?

Raw Milk License
Raiding the amish at 5 in the morning might be over the top. We have similar laws in europe and while they sometimes go a bit too far they make some sense in regards to food safety and health.

Pumpkin and Christmas Tree Vendor License
Protectionism ? Local pumpkin and christmas tree baron bribing city officials ?

Untangling Whale Restriction

Not sure about that one, but SS-18 makes some good points.

Interior Design License
Interior designer lobby out to curb competition ?

10 Additional 1099s to File
I don't even know what a 1099 file is, so I can't comment on this.

License to Close a Business
OK, this one looks crazy to me. Maybe it's aimed at restricting short-lived front companies ? If so they went overboard (provided this one's not being misreported)

Labeling Products with Calorie Counts
Meh, whatever. People should be smart enough to realize on their own that a triple whopper a day will make them fat but I don't see the harm of this "ridiculous regulation too bizarre to believe".

It's this whole attitude of "look at all these stupid government regulations" that provides political cover for entities like Wall Street and Big Oil to drive us through painful cycles of boom and bust, pillage the global commons, and generally make both figurative and literal messes - which the government ends up cleaning up, and taxpayers end up footing the bill for.

The way I look at it, the degree to which any public or private institution needs to have its activities regulated is directly proportional to its capacity to do harm. Sure, we still need checks and balances on government power, but we've also gone far off the deep end in deregulating major industries that need to be reined in. If you want to loosen up things for individuals and small business, fine, you probably have a case. But please, don't use that to justify dismantling regulation in general because we actually need more of it in some areas.

My point was that the fine for letting the whale go rather than waiting was greater than the fine for speeding (So the fine for doing an activity that endangers a whale is greater than the fine for doing an activity that endangers a person. This is not good.)

Bureaucracy. Ever expanding to meet the ever expanding bureaucracy.

I am surprised I am the first with that quote. :nono:

You are correct.

So, why do you trust government so much again?;)

Why don't you turst government?

Sure there are examples of crazy government, but their are examples of government doing what is right for their people, which some people are against, such as healthcare reform.

Ignoring the specific argument of Healthcare, I will simply repeat what you said, government is corrupt.

I don't trust government because, at least in the US, they have not proven worth trusting.

As for Healthcare reform, only a moron would argue for the Bill Obama passed, which, while slightly helping the poor, primarily helped big health insurance companies.

As for a real NHS system like England has, I'm still against it because government would run it inefficiently and its not their place.

Greater fines for speeding then. I have already elaborated why such a fine is required for the whale incident. And searching the web shows that $100 is on the low end of speeding tickets. Going a good amount above the speed limit can result in $500, with more severe speeding going into the thousands.

These regulations are no more insane that those given by your religious beliefs? What's the big deal?

It seems like you do not understand what that quote is about. It is not corruption since making more work for yourself is not wrong. What that quote is about is that people often make more regulations so they need more regulations for those said regulations. A perfect case in point from the Bible is the Sabbath laws the Jews had. The bible simply said "Keep the Sabbath holy" and from that one passage they came up with many laws from it. I can tell you right now that when you need to use a service from the government, you will be glad you have it.

You do realize I have spoken against things that are "In my own self-interest" before correct?

Oral bacteria have rights too you know.

Most regulations exist because somewhere there was a market failure. Or at least people were convinced that there was a market failure. That doesn't mean that all regulations are wise or well done, but that there was a real reason for doing them in the first place.

LOL What is the problem with making kids brush their teeth?

Also, selling unpasteurized milk should be a crime

By a parent or day-care center? Sure, why not! But not by the GOVERNMENT.

All these silly state and local regulations show why we need the Feds to handle most lawmaking.

Love it or leave it. USA #1.

No, they should just be struck down by the Supreme Court on the basis of the 9th amendment.

And I never claimed the US was #1. I don't know enough about other countries or how they work...
