What is your favourite pie?

This is inspired by Zach's now closed thread during stricter times.

Mine would be apple pie. But I do have savoury pies more often because i don't have desert that often.
Okay, I want that pie. That looks absolutely wonderful! :yumyum:

1. Steak, bacon, and cheese pie
2. Meat pie
3. Cheesecake with caramel/butterscotch on top
What, no bacon-topped cheesecake? ;)

Pumpkin. There is no other legitimate answer to this question. Anyone giving any answer other than pumpkin is on the payroll of whatever industry they are saying is best, be it pecan, apple, you name it.

And no, I am not on the payroll of the Great Pumpkin Appreciation Society or any other pumpkin related endeavor.
Pumpkin is wonderful, but in a competition between pumpkin and saskatoon, saskatoon wins.

How is pumpkin better than steak and cheese? Even without bacon, steak and cheese clearly win.
The outer shell of a pumpkin can be made into jack-o'-lanterns.

I've never been a big fan of pumpkin pie, mostly because I was introduced to it in my 20s. I was never a huge fan of fruit and/or veggies inside of baked things, so I was basically always sort of against the very concept. But anyway, I've tried to have an open mind and have really warmed up to Mexican style apple pies with ice cream, caramel, and .. well, something on that pie was deep fried, but I'm not quite sure what. And pumpkin pie now to me tastes okay, so I'll eat a bit during Thanksgiving if my mom makes some.

What sort of toppings do you recommend on a slice of pumpkin pie? Maybe next time I'll try to do it right. Bacon should go well on everything though.
Whipped cream is the usual thing to put on pumpkin pie. But if it's well-made, it doesn't need any.

Pumpkin pie is alright, it's just kinda... bland.
Add spices.

I love pecan pie! Whenever I order swiss chalet pecan pie is often a toss up with cheesecake, if i'm getting dessert. Cheesecake usually wins, but every once in a while I have a swooth tooth for pecan. I don't even know why. It's such a weird pie.. But the texture and the taste are often just amazing. In a way, perfect. But oftentimes too sweet.

I think I need to order some pie. Damn you guys..

I think that's what I had on mine. It seemed like it needed some sugar and/or salt, though, so I was picturing bhsup smothering his with something sweet and/or savoury maybe.

Sugar and salt on pumpkin pie?

Uh-uh. Nutmeg. Or cinnamon. The nutmeg should be part of the pie filling.

So today I learned there is such a thing as Saskatoon berries, and pies are made from them!

Apparently, they don't come down far enough for me to pick any. That's too bad because they sound like fun picking / eating. Thanks for the heads up, Valka! I'll keep a background eye out for them on the off chance some bakery has one one of these days. :)
You're welcome. :) We had a saskatoon bush in the back yard where I used to live, but my dad stashed so much stuff back there, it was impossible to get to it to pick any. So we left them for the birds.

I know where there are saskatoon bushes along the walking/biking trails in Waskasoo Park, where anyone can pick them (you have to be quick, though, before they're gone). There are also lots of saskatoon bushes in the wildlife sanctuary where I worked, although those are not allowed to be picked/eaten by humans.

Didn't stop some people from illicitly helping themselves, though. One of the staff told me about a guy who came into the interpretive centre with his pockets stuffed with saskatoons and carrying a huge double handful... and asked if there was a bucket or something he could put them in. :dubious:

EDIT: I have some vanilla/saskatoon berry ice cream in my freezer right now. The local Co-op carries it. :D

Chicken and Mushroom
Cherry
Apple

Not tried many others though.

Sugar and salt on pumpkin pie?

no no that's not what I meant

The pumpkin pies I've eaten so far (2? 3? 4?) have all sort of lacked much flavour. To add flavour you usually add salt or something similar. And they also weren't very sweet, and it seems to me that if a pie is not going to have meat or gravy or mushrooms or cheese or bacon or anything similar, it ought to be sweet in some way. So *shrug*, salt, and sugar. They were missing both spectrums of flavour possible with those 2 spices. So maybe I just need to go where they make the best pumpkin pie and try that.

I don't remember tasting much cinnamon. Cinnamon and sugar - I would eat a pumpkin pie if it had those things in worthy quantities.

Pumpkin pie isn't supposed to be salty or excessively sweet. It's supposed to be spicy (not hot-spicy, but a different kind of spicy that's hard to explain in words).

Here's a recipe for pumpkin pie spice. It includes cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Other recipes include cloves, as well.

If you really have to have sugar, then use brown sugar, or maybe maple, and use it sparingly.

Maybe I just don't understand what pumpkin pie is all about. The things I thought it lacked is what it's all about it seems, and I'm still not sure how to reconcile all that into some sort of coherent thought. It's like the pumpkin pie is re-defining itself in my mind as we speak.

I'm going to have to sleep on this. But I'm pretty sure I just need to eat one of these things made by someone who's grown up with it and has a lot of related expertise.

Well surprisingly I had apple pie and custard for breakfast just now, this thread made me crave it.

And I recently found out Im lactose intolerant, but I cannot life without my dairy desserts!

Must second this wholeheartedly, at least in the dessert pie category.

As a Yank, my experience of savory pies is limited to chicken pot pies - I must refrain from voting pending further research. :yumyum:

Turkey pie is good, too, although I prefer chicken.

For cream pies, I like banana or coconut.

I still can't believe somebody wasted a perfectly good banana cream pie (with real banana slices in it), throwing it at Ralph Klein. :(

They should have used one of those frozen McCains ones that taste like flavored cardboard.

EDIT: This thread is reminding me of the annual forum pie fights we had at Christmas on another site. The last one was pure artistry. :D

Banoffee pie!!!!

It's a little known fact that one can make a pie out of left-over pies. So, you can have pie pie.

And then make a pie from left-over pie pies: a pie pie pie.

And then...

WARNING Food poisoning may result if making pies from pies (or pie pie pies) which are past their best-before dates.

Things are looking up:

Stargazy pie.

Steak and ale, undoubtedly.

Cherry pie, obviously.

By the way, did you know why pies are always round? Because a square pie is irrational.

:cringe:

I'll get my coat...

@warpus: Quoted Valka's post just to reinforce it for you. She's doing pumpkin pie right. Soak in her wisdom.

Irasshaimase! :D
I think I already recently commented on the looks of English cuisine based on another picture you posted. You're scaring me, man!
