It seems that a lot of the people who post on these forums know German and a fair amount know how to speak a variety of other languages so I've decided to make a poll.

The question is, what languages, other than English, are you proficient in? By "proficient" I mean you are comfortable with the language, can use it in everyday conversation, understand about 90% or more of the written material inside books, magazines, and newspapers, and are able to interact with native speakers fairly well.

The poll options come from Wikipedia's list of languages by number of native speakers so forgive me if one of the languages you know aren't included in the poll. If you know a language that is not on the poll, please vote "other" and specify the language.

Poll coming up.
Vote and discuss. :)

Spanish

Basic French
Basic Portuguese (only reading and some listening, though...)
Basic Italian

Mainstream (and I use this because Romanian isn't mainstream) Romance Languages FTW!

Well I know Chinese but I don't meet your criteria for proficiency.

german
english

basic french
basic italian

(and due to those very basic spanish)

and i think i still could translate most latin texts (no poetry please :) ) using my dictionary to look up every one and a half word.

I am proficient only in English.

I'm only fluent in english at the moment

Learning spanish and I plan on becoming fluent in a few years.

ah, a typical american making a poll for an global audience. How amusing. Or with what holy king said, I can't vote now.

By that definition I guess I am only proficient in English, although I'm probably not that far from being proficient in Latin. I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be conversing with the dead though. :p

I'm proficient in Arabic. I could get Mandarin Chinese if I had the time, but I don't.

French and Hebrew, on and off.

I know them fluently at times. as in, I know how to speak them, but when I don't use them, I forget VOCABULARY (always my weak point, at that), while still understanding grammar and things like that. I can read books, etc. in them usually, and read magazines in both languages, and even read Harry Potter (books 1-6) in hebrew.

so when I'm using them often, I'm fluent. when they are more conversation pieces ;), not so much. I can be spoken to, but need to think about words more during those phases.

Hey jeps,

Did you stop the Nihon (Japanese)?

Yes, and I was nowhere near fluent in it.

Better to perfect 2 other languages than be horsehockey in 1 and mediocre in 2 IMO.
