What should I watch now that I am done with "Joan of Arcadia"?

So, at the risk of proving to everyone that I am chronically un-hip, here's my situation: my wife and I hardly ever watch television, because we are always busy with one thing or another in the evenings. If we do have a little time at home, we might watch a movie from Netflix.

Someone we respect had recommended the show "Joan of Arcadia", so we got the first disk of Season 1 on Netflix, and we really liked it. We cycled the rest of Season 1 and 2 through Netflix over the last few months, but now it is over (there were only two seasons). We really enjoyed the writing and were quite attached to the characters. The God-angle was very well managed, we thought. We also liked the setup that they did for Season 3, but the network pulled the plug on the show back in 2005 and there never was a Season 3.

The question of the day is "What shall we watch next?" It has to be something that has been around enough to be on DVD, so it probably won't be the latest hit show. It could be network or cable as long as I can get it on DVD. Some at work have suggested the new "Battlestar Galactica", but my wife is not much of a sci-fi fan. Others have suggested "Boston Legal".

Any other suggestions for shows that we "just can't miss out on"?

I hear Lost is a good one that hooks people.

While Battlestar Galactica is sci-fi, it's very much a drama as well. A fantastic drama. In my mind it was the best show -- not just scifi -- on TV this decade.

If you liked Joan of Arcadia (which I also liked), I recommend Dead Like Me. Boston Legal is fun but you'll want to see the last season of LA Law first.

"Mad Men" :) Just because I like it.

Battlestar Galactica vas so dark and depressing. Not my fav.

I strongly recommend Firefly and Veronica Mars.

I would definitely second the motion on Dexter.

I could also recommend Rome or Arrested Development.

Rome is more raunchy and dramatic, but Arrested Development is funny as hell.

I have no idea what kinda show Joan is, but I have some recommendations anyway

Six Feet Under - excellent show, my fav. tv drama of all time
Mad Men - first 2 seasons are out on dvd - very good drama
Sopranos - very entertaining to watch from beginning till end

edit: I second Dead like me, excellent show

I don't know much about tv either, and have no idea what Joan of Arcadia was about, so this might be completely different, but the Wire is simply the best tv-series I've ever seen. I can't really explain why I liked it so much, but if you're going to try it out, it might take episode or two to get used to it. It didn't start out with big drama or anything like that, but the plot is built gradually with no hurry. That's what makes it so good, I think. It has time for characters instead of everything happening all the time, and their life becomes more real.

It's also different from the old kinds of tv-programs in that it isn't so episode-centric. It uses the full power of tv-series by making use all the time they have. That makes it very good particularly as tv-series: it wouldn't work in any other format, as a movie or a book.

Another one that I've been watching lately is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I suppose there are very few people who wouldn't like it, but if you've read Holmeses and the general spirit of Holmes-stories delight you, you'll find this very good.

I also can confirm that Rome & Dexter are worthwhile. :king:

Big Love - outstanding series. Season 4 starts this January.

True Blood - great vampire series, but maybe a bit...not sure of your prudishness level.

John already mentioned Rome. That was an outstanding 2 season show (short seasons too, so not overkill), but again you need a prudishness check. Sometimes it was a bit over the top for me. But still....

"Technically, he's not UNDER the standard." :rotfl:

As long as we're mentioning shows that died at their prime, Futurama is an excellent choice :goodjob:.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

seconded, just bear through season 1 which is not up to today's standards and you'll like it.

Veronica Mars is also just plain awesome if you haven't seen it yet.
