I just heard the liberals won.
Yep! It's going to be the Mark Carney show for a while up here, it's just not clear yet if it'll be a majority government or not
edit: I couldn't find a good thread to write an update, so I'll just put it here. Assume this is a documentary I watched on TV about Canadian politics
The Liberals will form a minority government with 169 out of 343 seats. Had they gotten 172 or more seats that would have been more than half of all the seats, and that would have been a majority. And majorities are nice because then you can pass whatever bills you want, assuming the Senate and Queen/King/Governor General all like them and it's nothing that's actually illegal as per the constitution act.
To get stuff done the Liberals will need 3 votes from somewhere else. The two parties that will work with them on this are the slightly more left leaning NDP and the Bloc Quebecois. Most of the time that partnership will probably come from the NDP camp, they have 7 seats so that's more than enough votes to push the required votes for any bill to and over 172.
The NDP was also a junior partner last time around - they used these dynamics to push through a federal dental care plan and other goodies that's made our social safety net stronger. The NDP basically only agreed to support the Liberals as a junior partner if they passed some of their bills as well, in the end really benefitting Canadians. This is one way in which a minority government can be good for Canadians. It can keep the governing party in check a bit as well.
I predict that the Liberals will probably act as though they have a majority, more or less, at first. They have a mandate and will have NDP support to push through whatever is needed to protect the country and pivot our economy and political alignments. The BQ will probably support them on many bills as well, but who the hell knows. The 1 Green vote doesn't really matter in terms of the math, but it's good to have that thrown in there for good measure.
