The first 4 episodes of The Diplomat on Netflix are superb!

First two episodes of Silo (2023) are excellent. Great cast, and the production design is really outstanding. I'm always nervous about an adaptation of a book I liked, but this one is nailing it so far. I wondered whether the series might cover all of the books in one season, but based on the first two eps, I'd says they're only covering the first book. In fact, I might say they're not even aiming to finish the first book in one season, except I'm not sure where in the middle of the story there would be a natural stopping point. I don't remember Rashida Jones' character having as prominent a part in the novel, for example, but I thought she was a good addition.

Episode 1-2 spoiler:
Spoiler :
My only quibble with this portrayal of Allison is that I thought she was too quick to believe what she saw on the mysterious harddrive and literally bet her life on it. I thought she would have been a little more credulous. I thought there would be at least one more episode of her investigating what was on the HD and trying to figure out why the doctor only pretended to remove her implant before she said "I want to go out." That seemed abrupt. Also, I liked Rashida Jones' performance, so I wouldn't have minded seeing her a little more.

Agree! I watched both epis last night. Did not even know it was based on books. If it continues to hold strong, I think it could def be one of the best Apple series yet.

Also, agree that
Spoiler :
Alison seemed to buy in a bit fast. Not familiar with how epic or not is the book series. Maybe this is a limited series so they are squeezing stuff in. I'm not quite sure I understood exactly what she saw in the blueprints, although the video seemed convincing enough.

Silo, ep.1 & Wool
Spoiler :
My memory of the book is that it begins with Sheriff Holston going outside. I don't recall Allison being a character at all, just part of Holston's backstory. It's been a while since I read it, though.

A cliffhanger ending to Season 1! :( So good. all around.
I've been looking forward to this one. I loved The Americans, so I like that Russell is doing another drama. It maybe has some Madam Secretary vibes too, which I also mostly liked. Netflix doesn't have quite enough to draw me back atm, but maybe this Summer. The Night Agent and The Diplomat. Maybe a rewatch of GLOW, or the first seasons of Russian Doll or Stranger Things.

We did Night Agent, Beef and The Diplomat last week or two.

This is why we have kept Netflix you can usually find something to watch.

It also comes bundled with isp and basically costs us $3.

Some of the large mobile carriers - at least in the US - like T-mobile have discounts on Netflix. I save about 10 bucks per month. Egon, pretty sure you will really like The Diplomat. Russell and Sewell have a really great dynamic and it can be a bit comical at times, though the show is generally serious.

Citadel (2023), otoh, was pretty meh through its first two episodes. It's just as derivative as The Last of Us - it's G.I. Joe vs Cobra, or SHIELD vs. Hydra; plus The Bourne Identity - but without any of the style or deftness or charm. Wooden cast, dull action, uninspired script, and I'm not sure it's even trying to be inventive or clever. I doubt I'll continue watching. It kind of made me want to rewatch Alias (2001), though.

EDIT: Oh, I just thought of another one. Does anybody else remember La Femme Nikita (1997), the Canadian series with Peta Wilson and the guy whose mouth doesn't move when he talks? That show had some style. I just rewatched the pilot of that, last Fall, I think. It was super-'90s, but I thought it kind of held up.

Diplomat was generally good. Night Agent was another pleasant surprise.

First episode of Silo - quite good. I'm intrigued.

First episode of Citadel - it wants to be as action-packed and stylish as Mission Impossible or Alias, but something is just missing. I think it's the characters that just aren't as charismatic as the writers think they are. Some of the dialogue between the leads is pretty effing cringe.

Good morning Veronica is a crime thriller on Netflix. Excellent!

Second episode of Silo - I'm in. Feels like a series based on a solid Black Mirror episode loosely inspired by THX-1138.

Made a note to watch The Diplomat when I get Netflix again thx to you guys. :)

Perhaps old news, but I don't see it mentioned here...

Variety, 1 May 2023 - "‘The Diplomat’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix"

---

Of course the writers' strike is slamming the brakes on everything that's not already in the can. I'm seeing headlines here and there about just every show going on hiatus, and nobody knows when productions may even get underway. Listening to a podcast this morning, it doesn't sound like there's been much progress. One person thought it could easily stretch into the Fall. But I suppose a deal could be reached with what would appear to be suddenness from the outside.

---

I saw that East New York has been canceled, which isn't too upsetting. It was okay, nothing to strongly recommend it, but it was a style of American cop show* that I used to like a lot and that doesn't really get made much, so I found myself drawn to it, if only out of nostalgia. It was just as derivative as The Last of Us and Citadel, better than the latter but not as good as the former. In the last episode, one of the characters name-dropped Homicide: Life on the Street as his favorite cop show, so at least the writers knew whose corner they were standing on. If I'd been writing that scene, the conversation would have happened within earshot of Chief Suarez, played by Jimmy Smits. The other character in the dialogue would have said something like "Homicide was great, no question, but I was more of an NYPD Blue man, myself." Then have Smits' character look over his shoulder and raise an eyebrow. Too on-the-nose? Completely, but it would've made me laugh. Anyway, this was one of those shows that could maybe have "found itself" in a second season, but as it is, I don't think this would make the Top 10 on my list of one-and-done series I wish had been allowed to continue.

The one thing I do take away from East New York is Olivia Luccardi, who it turns out is genuinely from Brooklyn. Very charming. I hope she doesn't 'go Hollywood' and lose the accent or the gap between her front teeth. Her performance here made me think of one of my all-time favorites, Molly Price's Faith Yokas in Third Watch. Not that the characters were alike, but one made me think of the other.

* Hill Street Blues is the progenitor of the bloodline, so to speak, but then you have NYPD Blue, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, and Southland, I think the only one of this style of cop show to take place in California instead of on the East Coast. East New York wasn't quite up to those shows' quality, but it was definitely walking in their shoes.

Season 1 ended perfectly and I've moved on to Season 2. The story takes place in Sao Paulo. From the aerial photography it is an impressive city on the scale of those in China.

First ep of Class of '09 was intriguing, and a pretty decent pilot, as pilots go. I'll watch some more. I can't remember if it was this thread or the movies thread where we were talking about "techno-thrillers" a few months ago, but if you like techno-thrillers, this one may be worth taking out for a spin.

Writing about the ironically-named Memphis police Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods ("SCORPION") unit in the other thread, I couldn't help thinking of this exchange:

"What does S.H.I.E.L.D. stand for, Agent Ward?"
"Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."
"And what does that mean to you?"
"It means someone really wanted our initials to spell out 'S.H.I.E.L.D.'"

Oh, Succession's on TV. Should I wait until it loops back to S1 and start watching?
