What TV Shows Are You Watching? 8: Streaming Is the New Cable

As opposed to just starting it mid-season, I meant. It's not as if I didn't have things to watch.

Hmm are there any (good) shows you can start mid season these days? Deffo start Succession from S01E01 though.

Some of the deranged ones like Adventure Time, yes.

Probably will be very bad.
Also, Cara Delevingne would have looked a lot more like Michelle Carter :p
The real life story is interesting. Possibly inspired the horror game The Cat Lady too, although there the texts were sent by an invalid (with the very cool pseudonym: Eye of Adam).

Episode 4 of Silo was treading water a little bit, but seemed to be setting up a lot. The ending suggests that maybe a lot could happen all at once in the next ep.
Spoiler :
I don't remember what role Judiciary played in the book. Seems like they're poised to be a problem/antagonist of some sort. I think we're meant to assume that Judiciary is attempting a coup, that they assassinated the mayor and are trying to kill Marnes, and will be coming for Juliette soon enough. But I feel like that's too obvious..? Like, if it seems like it's been set up that way, it probably isn't that way. I figure there's a plot-twist still to come.

I loved the little moment when Marnes looks at the sign and deliberately dangles his beer bottle over the side.

Mrs. Davis was good, but I'm not sure I 'got' the ending. I might have to watch the last few episodes again. I feel like I missed something. Chris Diamantopoulos ("I'm J.Q.R., but you can call me J.Q.") had all of the laugh-out-loud moments.

Still a month away, but... *cracks knuckles*

I'm gonna kick some puppies if this isn't good. The showrunner, Kyle Bradstreet, did 9 episodes of Mr. Robot. I remember liking that show, but I have no idea which episodes were his. At this point, though, it may be more important what the Marvel Overlords mandated than what the showrunner wanted.

I still can't get over the fact that Olivia Colman is in it.

I watched the first three episodes before leaving on a trip and now have lost access to future episodes until June. I was intrigued by the pilot and was thus immediately disappointed by the story in the pilot being dropped to instead watch

Spoiler :
the Daily Trials and Tribulations of a Mechanic.

Does episode four at least get back to what was promised?

I thought the scene where she fixes the generator was gripping. Possible spoiler, having read the book:
Spoiler :
Her background as a mechanic comes into play later, where she has skills and experience that previous sheriffs haven't had.

It does get back to it, but it's kind of a table-setter. Being able to watch eps 4 and 5 back-to-back might not be the worst thing.

There's a sale on STARZ and I'm trying to decide if it's worth a month or two. They have a handful of movies that I'd like to see, but so far there don't seem to be a lot of series that grab me. Is Outlander any good? American Gods? Minx? Any other STARZ shows I should look up? They don't make it easy to browse their selection before subscribing.

American Gods?
American Gods is good. Black Sails is also a Starz series. I don't know if it's still on there exclusively, but it's an excellent show. You also get the late Ray Stevenson as Blackbeard.

Outlander is on Netflix too...it's pretty good, but I've only seen the first 3 seasons. White Queen, White Princess, and Serpent Queen are good. Def see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood if you have not yet seen it. And, ofc, Spartacus, but I assumed you've already seen it. Minx did not interest me. I read American Gods but have not watched it.

yeah, I was sorry to hear about Ray Stevenson...so good in Rome

edit: I saw the first season of Black Sails...okay..

STARZ online streaming services are only available through participating partners located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

Unbelievable..the internet has become like cold war between countries.
Psh. Countries are so 20th Century. We're living in a cyberpunk dystopia now, with mysterious AI, electronic surveillance, private spacecraft in orbit, mercenary companies waging wars with remotely-piloted drones, megacorps & tent cities - just about the whole shebang. Self-driving cars and billionaires growing clones of themselves for transplant pretty flowers won't be far off.

I felt that it thematically shares quite a lot with Lindelof's own The Leftovers, so if you've seen that one... Simone's relationship with her mother Celeste, is also a bit reminiscent of the dynamic between Kevin and his father, Kevin Sr., just reversed. I thought Mrs. Davis was very creative and unique especially in its depiction of faith and A.I; not everything landed for me, Wiley especially felt a bit purposeless in the final two episodes, as if they didn't quite know what to do with the character for the finale.

I haven't seen The Leftovers, so I can't comment on that comparison, but otherwise, I agree with you. I liked that this show took some big swings and did weird stuff. I need more weird stuff.* The Last of Us went the other way and concentrated on perfectly executing a fully-derivative show that offered nothing new at all. It was good, don't get me wrong, maybe even great, but I think it hit the glass ceiling on that kind of thing. I almost wish Mrs. Davis was even weirder. I agree about Wiley.
Spoiler :
The whole story with his "expiration date" tattoo seemed to fizzle at the end. I didn't understand the thing with the roller-coaster that kills you. Was the whole idea that he was never really going to be killed? Was it just a test to see if he'd report when he was told to? That doesn't make sense, unless he was one of the first people to actually do it ('cause once it got out that the 'expiration dates' were just some kind of test, they wouldn't work anymore). Although if it wasn't something like that, I guess I didn't understand what the tattoos were for. I never understood it, but I figured it would come together in the end, so I didn't worry about it. But then it didn't come together in the end, and I still don't get it. I wonder if I spaced out or sneezed at precisely the wrong moment and missed a crucial line of dialogue that explained the whole thing.

* Have you watched Upload on Amazon? That's another weirdo comedy. Another one I liked was Made For Love with Cristin Milioti and Ray Romano, but Warner Bros yanked it off HBO Max and I suppose it's probably gone forever. Now that I'm thinking about it, Cristin Milioti and Betty Gilpin need to do a show or a movie together. I'm thinking of The Good Place with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson now, too. Kristen Bell, Cristin Milioti and Betty Gilpin all in the same show together might be too much, but I'm willing to risk it if they are.

Finally finished season 1 of SNL. I've watched season 2 previously, so it will be on to season 3. I need to pause and finish season 3 of Picard first, though.
